Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be installed without a can?

I'm installing new lights and would like to forego the remodel cans if possible and just cut a hole, directly wire in the light and stick it up there. There is no insulation in the ceiling, and about 8 inches of clearance with a concrete slab above.
Asked by: JoeThePlumber
You need the can for the spring wires to hold onto in order to hold it up to the ceiling. The bulb does not get hot, so you may be able to rig something up without the can, but I don't think it would be up to code. It's light enough that you may be able to just use some strong reversable tape to hold it up. I don't think it would be too much weight to just hang it on the drywall without the can.

What kind of Recessed Light Housing should be used for this light?

Asked by: John
Standard 6" cans. Be advised that the spring arms are not that great so It is a problem to get them to stay in the can!! I had to modify the spring arms a bit.

Are these considered spot lights or flood lights?

Asked by: Vonnie54
They are more of a flood light.

Are these IC rated? (Can they come in contact with insulation?)

Asked by: Attic
The can itself will be rated for IC or not. LED replacement lights are cool burning so it should not make any difference if the can is rated IC or not.

Customer Reviews

65W Equivalent Soft White (2700K) 6 in. Dimmable LED Retrofit Downlight is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from As easy as it sounds! Replacing my existing lighting with these retrofit lights was simple... unscrew the old bulb, remove the spring clips holding the existing deflector/ring, screw in the LED adapter, bend the new spring clips into place, and push into the opening. The light is instantly on... bright... an instant upgrade to the kitchen and hallway lights that they replace. Plus, the long-life of the bulbs means I won't have to get on a ladder again for a long time to replace them. These LED's aren't a compromise in light quality either, unlike some of the first generation LED bulbs. My brother and father both used these in their own homes and had excellent results as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hopefully the last time I replace my kitchen bulbs These lights were just as advertised. They were easy to install and look nice, now I just have to figure out what to do with my old bulbs and covers. The payback period for me is ~3 years but my main driver was reduced summer heat (will actually be detrimental in the winter), not having to deal with burn outs and avoiding the horrible color/warm up issues of CFLs. Did all 11 in about 20 minutes. The only down side I see is that these things can not be painted to match the ceiling like my old metal covers. These lights dim well and are actually brighter than the incadencants they replaced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dimmable AND Quiet These lights are just perfect, and so easy to install. You will spend more time dealing with the cardboard packaging than you will installing the lights. They are stylishly flush with the ceiling, and give off a very neutral tone .. more daylight than incandescent, and very bright. They are also dimmable, which is great, but even more great is that they do not hum, like so many other options I have tried. I was ready to replace my dimmer switches, but now, with these lights, I do not have to. The level of dimness you can achieve seems to vary with how many lights are on one switch, which is weird, but ultimately I am very pleased with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product These lights were VERY easy to install. I installed 6 in my Family Room vaulted ceiling in about 10 minutes. The pigtail end made screwing them in easy . The clips joined with the can with no problems, creating a solid seal between the ceiling and the plastic lip with no gaps. The LED lights immediately turn on - no delayed start. All 6 have the same tint/color and dim evenly without flicker. The light cast is very soft and adds so much ambiance to the room. Nicely done, TCP!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Different product shipped than pictured The kit shipped to me is not what is pictured. It is supposed to be identical to the 2 pack (RL12DR6527K2) - even the model number is the same (without the 2 on the end). But the single pack shipped in a green package and is heavier. It does not stay flush with the ceiling due to its weight - and the shape of the kit is different, so unless you like having non-matching lights, you can't use these with the kits sold as two packs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would buy them again Very easy to swap out the old lights and this looks very nice in the ceiling. We had the more expensive Phillips version put in about 1 year ago for another area so tried these as an cheaper alternative. They are almost as good. They only downfall is the dimmest setting is still pretty bright compared to the others. These are in an area that it is not as critical to be so dim so it is Ok. Very good product for a really good price, on sale or not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LED retro fit can lights Good retro fit can light for the price but the springs that hold the new light in the can did not work out to well for me, had to keep playing with them to get the light to fit tight against the housing. All in all not bad for the price. I think that I will just replace the lamps in my other high hats with LED bulbs for about the same price as this retro fit kit..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cost effective LED retrofit The LED retrofits lights work well, are easy to install and dim better than other models I have used. Even though they dim well, they will not dim down as much as an incandescent bulb. All other LED retrofits I have used have some kind of gasket that gives a tighter seal between the ceiling (esp if the ceiling is textured) and the flange of the fixture. These TCP fixtures do not have a gasket, just the plastic flange. I made my own gaskets out of some 3/32 inch craft foam (Wal Mart) to help provide a more air tight seal. However, I purchased the fixtures on sale at Home Depot for less than $15 each, which is a very good price.
