Customer Questions & Answers

do i have to use the bulbs that it comes with or can i use my own bulb

Asked by: aznkid
You MUST use TCP connected bulbs. You can either use the ones that came with the kit or you can use TCP connected bulbs that you purchased on your own.

How can you turn the light on and off?

Can you turn the lights on and off with a wall switch or do you have to use a smart phone? If you have to use the smart phone it would seem weird to be sitting beside a lamp and have to use a smart phone to turn it off or on.
Asked by: Jafo
You can use the phone app or you can use the light switch. The choice is yours! However, in order for the bulbs to work with the app the switch must remain on the ON position at all times. If you use the light switch and leave it on the OFF position then the light bulb will appear "disconnected" the next time you use the phone app.

Consumer Reports shows the Connected by TCP with two bulbs, etc. at $50. Home Depot also shows reviews that mentioned $50 purchase price. ???

Asked by: Revrob
They (used to) go on sale every now and then. I picked mine up for $80 and the 2 days later they went on sale for $50. Homedepot was great refunding the difference though.

Can I use these outdoors?

In one place, the info says indoor/outdoor. In another it states indoor/outdoor enclosed. Does that mean on a covered porch or must it just be in a light fixture that has a globe? This is really important for me to know.
Asked by: Manderso
Yes. you will need to get the out/indoor bulbs.

Connected Smart LED Light Bulb Starter Kit with (2) A19 LED Dimmable Light Bulbs is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 125.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Control lights anywhere and on a timer This is a very cool system. The system comes with two wifi light bulbs and the control unit. The black box is everything you need to start controlling your entire house. You can basically keep adding compatible devices to the system. The black controller box can be tucked away in a closet hidden from site, it just requries an ethernet connection. T Once on your network you can control the devices with your phone, or ipad or even a web interface. I attached a screen shot of the web interface. he nice thing about this system is the lights can be dimmed or turned on and off. They can also be set to turn on and off at different times of the day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow !! excellent way control lights This is a great product. I use it everyday in my living room and front door way of my house. It is easy to setup and the app is very easy to use. The app allows you to control the lights in various ways, you can dim the lights and even set timers for them to turn on. For me I set my timers to come on around the time I get home so I don't need to feel around in the dark when I open the door for the light switch. In my living room I use my app to dim the lights when watching movies etc. Since the base unit is tied into your network at home it also has the ability to work over the internet allowing you to control your lights from anywhere with internet access. One other thing to mention, the bulbs are a nice warm white color and is very bright for an LED. I like the compact design and brightness Overall I am very happy with this product and will be expanding the blubs to more rooms in my house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy set up and lot of energy savings Evidently my kids think we have solar power electricity because there are constantly lights being left on in the house. This kit is great for 2 reasons: first are the LED bulbs. They draw less that a CFL yet produce natural looking bright light. The only difference I noticed is a very slight delay when turning on the light. They do not flicker when dimmed and light produced is not "fake" looking. Secondly the phone app makes it so easy to monitor your usage. My kids like to leave lights on when they're not home so I can quickly check via the app turn off individual lights or entire rooms at a time. For a vacation, you can schedule lights to turn on in different rooms for any period of time for extra security. Setup was very easy. Plug and play into the internet router and the app walks you through the rest in a few short steps. Please watch my video for a demonstration of the app.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get the kids up in the morning My husband picked up one of the bigger three-bulb kits online a while back, mainly we've been using it to get our kids up for school in the morning by having the lights in their rooms come on slowly to wake them up. It works Brilliantly, much nicer than alarm clocks! I honestly think this is a great product, i'm constantly raving about it to anyone who will listen. Only just got home from the black friday sale at hd's, where i picked up four of these specific two-bulb kits. I'm planning on giving three of them to my brothers for christmas (they're geeks and will love this too) and keeping one myself. I want to try and set one up on our deck and have it turn on automatically for a few hours when it gets dark.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from WiFi Lights When the package first arrived ! of the bulbs did not work properly - the manufacturer promptly sent out another and talked me through the setup of the new bulb. I like the convenience of being able to turn the living room lights on and off while away from home. I do wish that more bulbs came with the system and I plan to buy a few more when they become available. Setup was quick and easy, other than the one bad bulb. The replacement came the next day and worked perfectly. The manufacturer told me that the bulbs can be used outside as long as they are protected by the fixture cover. I plan to buy a few more bulbs and put them in each of my outdoor fixtures so I can control the lights when away from home.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from They work pretty good after dealing with a "time" issue. I like this system for the most part. It will be nice when they add additional products that will control switches and plugs.I did have one issue though and put it here in case someone else has this problem too. I messed around with these for "hours" trying to get the automated schedule to work. After exhausting all possible causes (including exchanging the original set) I discovered that I had to set the time ahead one hour from when I wanted the lights to come on. (you want them on at 7, you set them to come on at 8) Since a user adjustable "current time" options isn't available in the software I'm assuming it sets the time based on what it picks up from the ISP. In this case it appears that it's set for daylight savings time when it's actually standard time. I've sent an email to TCP about this and will update my review once I've heard back from them. I didn't see any one else with this issue so it will be interesting to see what the possible cause is in my case and what can be done about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Didn't think I would love it this much I was skeptical about how much impact having a wireless lighting system would have on my household. Installing the hardware was very easy and then setting up the software on my wireless devices was pretty easy as well. The one hangup I had was trying to modify the preset Smart Controls. Forget trying that; just create your own and everything will work fine. I love being able to turn on/off lights while I'm pulling in the driveway or out and about. The app lets you set timers as well which is great for when you are away or if you want to set outdoor lights to go on/off at certain times. I also like how you can take a photo of your light fixture and save it to the app to easily identify which light you are controlling. I will be getting more bulbs to add to the network. Even though the bulbs are dimmable, I wish there were higher wattage-equivalent options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Welcome to the smart phone age Since most of us have smart phones (and for those who don't, you soon will), we're finding all kinds of neat things we can do with them. They're basically a portable computer disguised as a phone. The Connected Wireless Smart Lighting Kit brought our home to the smart phone age. The set-up is so easy; just screw in the two light bulbs, plug the controller into your home network (via the router or switch), download the app, enter a password and voila! I don't think it took us more than 10 minutes from start to finish. The most time consuming part was to decide which lights we wanted to change. We chose the bedroom lamp and the living room lamp. Here's one of the reasons you should get one of these. Let's say you plan to come home when it's still light out, yet something happens and you come home to a dark house. Instead of stumbling around, you just go to the app your phone and turn the lights on. You can even use it as a deterrent for criminals (turn lights on from you smart phone). The bulbs are LED, so you're being energy conscious. You can also get CFL bulbs as well. You must use their bulbs, which may seem like an expensive proposition, however the life expectancy is 23 years per bulb! The kit comes with two LED bulbs, the controller and all wires and adapters. The system can control up to 250 bulbs - far more than we have in our house. The controller can be set up to turn each light on and off, dim the light and set up on a timer. There is a mode where the entire room can be controlled with one motion (vs each bulb individually) and you can program scenes for each room. You can even set up a schedule (lights off during the day, bright when coming home, dim at night and off after 10 pm). The set works great, is so versatile, was easy to install and set up, has been flawless and makes our home more usable.
