With 17 taps and 17 dies in a full range of coarse and fine sizes from #4 to 1/2 in., the TEKTON Tap and Die Set (39-Piece) is the ideal all-purpose set for your garage or shop. These tapered plug taps and dies are the most commonly used style and are perfect for most hand threading applications. They are known for their ability to start easily, either cutting new material or chasing lightly damaged threads. With proper technique and the right lubricant, these taps and dies will cut mild carbon and alloy steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass and bronze.

Will this work to cut threads in wood?

I need to cut threads in wooden dowels and like wise thread wooden blocks as the nuts for the screws to make bench vises. Will this set work for that and if so what is the maximum diameter of dowel it will work for?

This product is intended for cutting threads into metal. It more than likely will not fit your needs.

This set is NOT made for cutting threads into or onto wood.
The taps would do way too much tearing of the woodgrain and if the dies do not destroy the dowels in the cutting process, they would compress the wood fibers to a point that the dowel would never thread into a mating threaded hole, with out redoing the cutting process a good dozen times first.

Tekton customer service needs to learn to look at their own product description... The largest in this set seems to be 1/2"-20... which is 1/2" diameter bolt or nut size, and 20 threads per inch. Hope this helps some...

We source our tools globally, using mostly Taiwan, China, and the US. This particular tool is made in China.

It seems that they do not stock such a large tap or die, nor do they have anything larger than a 7/8" size tap-die...via online sales. Looks like your going to have to keep on looking... :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy at own Risk This Tap and Die set is Junk. The tap set I bought at Harbor Freight is better. Tap wrenches will not hold taps or dies. Dies are not taper start dies which you would expect from a simple set like this or something Home Depot would sell. Very bad. Broke two taps and was not even tapping a hole just chasing the threads in a existing hole. Very poor quality.

So now I have a worthless set because I only needed the one size and it is broken. I'm sure it is my fault but still it should not have broken. I will not buy this brand again.
