The toilet is not what makes this product special. The toilet is designed to work with the macerating pump. Water and sewage will not flow up hill. Sewage systems work on gravity. So if you want to put a toilet or bathroom in a place where there are no gravity drain lines you need to install a pump. The pump will pump the sewage up to a point where it can enter the gravity system. So if you wanted a bathroom in a basement and the sewage pipe came through the wall, you would need a pump. Typically this would involve breaking up the floor and installing it in the floor. With this product the waste leave the rear of the toilet and enters the macerator which is a type of pump. It chews it up and pumps it to the gravity system. The macerator is designed to fit conveniently behind the toilet. If you have further questions please feel free to give me a call. Answer:
I can not speak to the codes in your area for a number of reasons; especially that I don't know where you are. However to the best of my knowledge all states in the US have plumbing codes and require permits and inspections when working on sewage systems. I would put your question to the code enforcement official in your area.

Answer:
If the unit is installed properly there should be no odor other than the odor that is normally associated with a bathroom. Plumbing fixtures such as toilets, sinks and sewage pumps must be vented according to code. So the sewer gas is vented out of the house.
