You cannot use all bulbs in just any type of fixture, LED bulbs do still get quite hot and dissipate heat through the fins on the bulb. 100 watt equivalent LED bulbs get pretty hot after about 10 minutes and I have actually seen them reach temps above 150 degrees. When you put these bulbs in a closed fixture, the heat builds up and can actually overheat and damage the sensitive electronics that convert the power down to the lower voltage that the LED requires. So, read the labels and don't just buy the first cheap LED bulb you can find. Read Less

Answer:
The answer to this question is that it depends on bulb wattage and type. However, every type and wattage I have used is a bit harsh without a dimmer.

It really depends on the light bulb you use in this instance, and not so much the lamp.
Since it can take a 100 watt max bulb, this would be sufficient for reading. However, I would recommend you to use an LED or CFL 100 watt equivalent that is in a daylight color for optimum reading.

Plus, these efficient bulbs last longer and stay cooler to the touch vs. the older incandescents and halogen bulbs.
So your white page becomes really white while reading, which can greatly reduce eye strain compared to soft white lighting.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great addition for the porch Weighing in at 19 Lbs. sets for a stable anchorage without any fixings The unit lamp shade is of twisted bamboo strands and is 16 inches diameter and 11 inches high and the all metal black lamp itself stands 60 inches tall from the bottom of the stand to the top of the shade. The bronze effect (bamboo shade) is very pleasing to the eye and has been put together with care and designed to last. Too many times I have bought bamboo shades only for the bamboo strips to come apart, but although I did try to pull this apart, using minimum force, I couldn’t. Therefore I can state that this is a sturdy shade and extremely unlikely to come apart. The push on/off switch is located on the upright support 4 inches from underneath the shade giving an ideal location and not fixed to the cable like so many others products. The uprights simply screw into each other with little effort involved and the shade is put on and then given a small twist to lock it in place. The drum shaped glass shade is not unlike a plastic look, that is, you cannot see through it but it is a thick glass which measures 7-1/2 diameter by 8 inches tall which is held in place by 3 ball screws which in turn go through the 3 glass holes for added security. But you must fit a bulb in the socket before the fitting of the glass drum, therefore when a bulb does require changing, then the glass shade has to be removed first and extreme care would have to be taken not to drop it as it is quite a heavy glass shade. The 3 pin plug is a healthy 10 feet. I have found personally that a CFL 100 watt equivalent daylight color is the best for the lamp for reading but as long as you keep to the 100W or less, you’re good to go. I did try some LED’s but have stuck with the CFL type March 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by different I got this to use indoors for now as I am moving soon and don't presently have a covered outdoor space. It is set in the corner of the bedroom where it gives out a decent bit of light. I really do like the modern appeal of the bamboo "wire" around the shade. It is also a good height for indoors, I might want it a little taller for using it outdoors. April 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice for an outdoor lamp I got this light and opened the box surprised it was sectioned and needed put together...the upright tube is heavy wall and threaded so it's quite simple. It was easy to do and all the joints lined up perfectly after pulling the cord through to make it all come together. The inner glass shade is made to encase the bulb to prevent water from getting in however, the base to receive the bulb has the flange outside of the glass shade and thus I would imagine some water could still get inside but not into the light socket since there are drain holes as it looks like they thought it through during design. It does use 3 screws to anchor the shade just in case it gets shifted or possibly blown over but the glass shade will still likely break if that happened...I was kind of expecting a gasket to dampen the glass against the metal base. The outer shade is meant to diffuse the light but is more for style in my opinion and I think I would like the light more diffused myself like an actual lamp shade. It allows the bulb to put off a lot of light but in a bit of a harsh way, again, my opinion. The base is pretty heavy to keep it weighted down for wind since it is an outdoor approved fixture and we have plans of using it in our screened porch so it should work good for our needs but I will need to try multiple different bulbs to find the right amount of light. I will say, the quality of the light is fantastic and in line with what you should expect for an outdoor approved lamp along with a proper grounded plug. April 3, 2016
