My Moen shower would only dribble out of the shower head no matter where I turned the control to. I checked for possible water supply obstructions. Next was the shower control and I found that the spindle assembly valve was not working correctly. After some research, I found that the spindle was carried by Home Depot. I checked with the store first and found out that this part was an on- line only purchase. Went home and ordered it shipped to store. Got it 2 days ahead of scheduled delivery date.
Item was exactly like the old one that froze up and wouldn't work. Went in place quickly and easily and came with all the parts. I had read a review that it didn't come with a washer, but mine did. Channel lock pliers and a Phillips screwdriver tightened everything back in place and 15 minutes later I had streaming water like before. Entire process ( disassembly and assembly) was about 40 minutes.
I did oil up the old one and shook it to finally get the valve section loose again so now I have a spare. You can hear the valve sliding back and forth.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Handyman Replacement of damaged spindle.
I had to replace this spindle since I did not understand the instructions to remove the spindle assembly that came with the shower installation documentation. It is necessary to turn the handle all the way to the fully open position in order to remove the spindle assembly properly , If you turn the temperature control handle to the "warm" position which I presumed meant only half way to fully Hot, the spindle binds in the cold water stop and damages both the spindle and possibly the cold water stop which then requires getting the hot and cold water stop tools to complete the replacement of the temptrol valve.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by MasYMas Great product, a little pricy
I was replacing a old handle and shower trim and the old handle was seized in the old spindle. Tried heating, etc but eventually broke off the stem. Quick trip to HD, in stock, and back in business. Easy to install. Nice and smooth action. Easy to adjust. Don't force it in, it has to be in the right position before inserting into the main assembly.

I bought the spindle to repair the faucet and it was so much faster and easier than trying to rebuild the Temptrol faucet . What would have taken 1-2 hrs. only took about 15 minutes and works like a charm.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Trillium HD: great price Symmons: great product, great warranty!
By contacting Symmons Customer Service, I found out why my shower water is now cold. They have a lifetime warranty on the internal parts of a valve so they are mailing one. My plumber misadvised me that Symmons had only a one year warranty! Buying the parts is a good idea if you don't want to take cold showers while waiting for a package to arrive. And Home Depot has a great price! BTW, this has happened twice previously and my plumber charged me for 2 new shower/tub kits but only replaced the part he needed and took home the rest. Maybe parts were not readily available.... Hmmm, I do feel somewhat fleeced.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by greenifpossible nice to have spindles available if you really need one
i had a temptrol valve that dripped and did not deliver water i considered warm enough. i bought a spare spindle to keep in stock as i have 3 old temptrol valves on the property, but spindles don't fail very often. if you can hear the piston rattle when you shake it, the old one is probably ok. if the problem was that the valve drips after shutoff try rebuilding the old spindle with the parts in the much cheaper seal and hardware kit and inspect the seats in the temptrol housing for erosion (replace if eroded). in my case the old spindle was ok except for the washers and the seats were ok. rebuilding the old spindle cured the drip problem and resetting the hot water stop screw cured the lack of hot water. download the pdf technical literature file from the symmons site and you can probably decide what kits and parts you want for your temptrol valve.
