Answer:
Open to the ground, which I like. Any moisture that forms, seeps into the ground, helping to keep the compost moist, but not wet.

Answer:
It is open to the ground. If you have gophers or moles I would suggest placing some Chicken wire underneath. You can also deter those critters by occasionally adding human hair to the compost

Answer:
you put down, underneath the bottom, 1/4" ground cloth, aka chicken wire, and then screw the composter into the ground over said ground cloth. this prevents rodents and what not from burrowing and getting into.

Not if you layer it with something dry like leaves or straw and leave the bottom open to dirt, it just takes a little longer.

I did notice while"stiring" that the contents were warmer than expected, but not as warm as the exterior when conducting heat from direct sunlight. It should pose no problem for the children.

Answer:
The manufacturer says, "Unit dimensions when assembled: 33" diameter by 33" high."
That sounds more reasonable than what Home Depot has posted (33"x16"x33"). It's ROUND! How can it be only 16" deep if it's 33" wide? Trust the manufacturer's specs.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed Where i work i have an teaching garden for children with special needs. One component that I have incorporated is composting. I was disappointed most with the fact that this composting bin has no bottom. I don't want any animals to burrow underneath, and secondly that plastic that it is made of is pretty soft. I don't think that it is very sturdy. I am looking to see if I can find another to replace it before I return it. NJ July 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best composter I had this composter back in the 80's. When I moved, I had to leave it behind. Until recently, I wasn't able to find this type again. I tried the kind that rotates. As soon as it got any weight to it, it became impossible to turn. Finally, I found my old composter! I purchased it and couldn't be happier! August 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't Waste Your Time: Terrible Customer Service at Home Depot and It will NEVER Arrive Unfortunately, Home Depot is the only vendor selling this product besides municipalities. I don't live in a municipality so I tried to order this online from Home Depot to be delivered to the store in my hometown. One customer service failure after another. I have recordings of some agents saying it was at the store, others telling me it wasn't. I got an email saying it was shipped with a tracking number that existed one day and no longer existed the next. 5 customer service people + 5 different stories + 5 weeks → No Composter. I spent more than $109.00 worth of my time trying to straighten out this obscenely ridiculous situation. To add insult to injury, the final customer rep was to cancel the order and refund my card and never did. I have disputed the charge through my credit card company and Home Depot has lost my business. If I can't get a good customer service in this situation, I literally am praying for folks who bought a refrigerator with a problem or who had their tile installed poorly. I hope Earth Machine picks a different vendor. July 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Size The Composter was easy to assemble. I like that I can vent it or make it airtight. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Composter I have purchased a number of these products over the years. It has sometimes been difficult to find until I happened to find it at Home Depot. They don't seem to last as long as in the past. So, I will be buying another one in the new future. I keep 5 working at one time. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy button Easy to order, easy to assemble, easy to use. What more could anyone ask for? May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Longlasting and solid This is our second earth machine. We produce so much compost that one wasn't enough. The first earth machine we inherited from our neighbors and I'm not sure about it's age, but it worked fine for more than 5 years. It's light weight and design make it easy to move, yet, keeps critters out and keeps the compost contained, moist and dark to ensure fast disintegration. April 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect... exactly what I wanted Very easy to assemble. There is plenty of room for household and garden scraps. July 15, 2015
