regarding Pratt Retail Specialties 18 in. x 18 in. x 16 in. 80 lb. Heavy Duty Medium Box $1.97 each

Hi, is the box in the title double-walled? Thank you
Asked by: Anonymous
It is a single walled box but it is very sturdy, I would not hesitate putting a heavy load in this box. I think it will stand up under extreme conditions.

What can you pack in heavy duty boxes and what size is better for moving?

Asked by: Vorona
I'll second the answer of using the SMALLEST box that will work for what you are packing. Along with the consideration of weight of the packed box (lighter is better no matter who is moving the box), you want the boxes to be full so they can be stacked without concerns of partially filled boxes collapsing. You will probably wind up needing a lot of filler if you use too many larger boxes.

Are these boxes square or rectangular?

Asked by: ct222
Hi, These boxes are square. They are well worth the money. I have packed my books, kitchen items , etc., and it has held up to being in storage and moved twice and still protected my stuff.

Will this box serve for packing books?

I have a lot of books and papers that get heavy quickly. Will this box stack with books inside?
Asked by: JEB3
Wouldn't recommend this size for books unless you're a weight lifter and enjoy moving really heavy items. Although it will take more boxes the regular small or book size will serve your purpose better but when you consider the cost per box you'd more than likely end up spending less. The key to the boxes stacking well is that they are packed and closed up within the intended confines of the box. Over stuffed boxes with bulges don't stack well. Under packed boxes tend to crush under the weight of boxes stacked on top of them.

18 in. L x 18 in. W x 16 in. D Heavy Duty Medium Box is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Labeling is obnoxious Not sure why Home Depot must paste their logo so largely all over the box. With that and the moving room check list, the boxes are difficult to reuse. I ordered same size from Uline and for better boxes with no labeling at all. If you are going to be storing something, you don't need to have Home Depot advertising

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Survived both cargo and shipping truck in top condition Significantly better than regular non heavy duty boxes. Survived beautifully, no damaged items, whereas regular boxes split, crushed, and busted wide open. Minimal tape needed. Will be worth the extra penny, save you time and effort, and your items are more likely to make it undamaged.

Every year my wife goes home to Vietnam for the winter and takes a lot of things with her. By using boxes instead of suitcases you can save 4 or 5 pounds per piece. In the past it was a struggle finding boxes that were large enough but sturdy enough to survive multiple transfers between flights and being loaded and unloaded into aircraft baggage compartments. These boxes are the perfect size and with the thick double wall construction they are very firm and do not cave in or collapse like standard cardboard boxes.

I have a lot of ceramic items from casserole dishes to dinnerware to decorative knick knacks and if you pack them well in unprinted newpaper, dish separators and bubble wrap these boxes will do the job protecting those items. You can really pack a lot into them and they're not too large to carry and move around. Because they're heavier cardboard they don't collapse if you don't fill the box perfectly to the top and stack others boxes on top. I will never use any other boxes - this is my third move and nothing was broken - even after my movers dropped two of the boxes!! I also use the heavy duty small boxes and the heavy duty larger one for lamps and large items. You can easily reuse these boxes over and over again. I highly recommend them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ordinary packaging tape does not stick On the plus side, these boxes are extreme sturdy and quite inexpensive. On the minus side, no ordinary packaging tape will actually stick to them. Which makes them useless. This isn't unique to the Home Depot boxes, it seems to apply to nearly all corrugated boxes made from recycled material and provided in a "bare" finish. Rather than being smooth and dry, it seems to have a slightly waxy quality and a surface finish uniformly coated in a fine, dust-like material which is nearly impossible to remove. All three of the Scotch tapes commonly used for such tasks (Moving & Storage tape, Heavy Duty packaging tape, and Reinforced Strapping tape) start to separate after a few hours or days, as did both types of packaging tapes the movers brought with them (one clear, one brown.) The thick, gummy adhesive used on duct tape does seem to stick reasonably well, but duct tape is quite expensive and far less convenient to work with. Contrast this with either virgin material boxes or the shiny, laminated boxes which large retail items like microwave ovens come in- I've got a few of those which I've been dragging around since I graduated from college in 1999 (go Gators) and have been through a total of seven long-distance moves. The 18 year old clear tape on them as secure as it was the day I applied it. Long story short: avoid recycled boxes for any sort of serious usage, such as handing over your belongings to a moving company and hoping that they all arrive still inside the box you put them into. Buy your boxes from a truck-rental company such as Penske or U-Haul. Neither of those have yet transitioned to using recycled material, and while they cost slightly more, they actually work properly.

The only reason I rated it a 4 rather than a 5 is that it should have handles on the sides. My mistake for not noticing this but other than that the boxes are just fine.
