I hope this answers your question. As far as protection is concerned It is not necessary, you can however paint or stain composite decking or railing to achieve a custom color, but it is not necessary for

decking that has been faded can be painted or stained at any time, even years after it has been installed.
However you should use paint or stain that is made for a walking surface.
Most paints or stains that you would apply to wood can be applied to composite decking. The following companies
have evaluated composite decking and suggested these coatings:

1 gal. Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shield against elements Thompson's has been around for years. I have used it on all of my outside deck and concrete projects. It is easy to apply with a paint roller, brush, or sprayer. For best results on established decking or concrete I recommend pressure washing to clean out the dirty pores and spots of your project. This opens up the pores to receive Thompson's for a better and longer lasting seal against weather elements. Just follow the directions on its application because you don't want to use too much where it puddles because it starts to repel itself when it starts to cure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Stuff This water seal is great on decks and concrete. It is thick enough not to run. I like the fact that it does not bubble very much when you roll it on. One disadvantage is that it does not last more than 2 years here in Arizona. The sun is brutal and comes off by the second summer. I like the fact that it comes in many different stains. It is worth the price to use Thompson's.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beads up great! I used this on 1/3 of my driveway to see what to expect before being too labor intensive. I used a tight sponge roller thinking it would distribute the required recommended thin film. It did not. It used way more than the recommended application amount. But I couldn't tell this until half way into the project based on the amount of product used. Between that and overlapping strokes for good coverage, I used more product than anticipated, but I couldn't tell this when applying it as all I was looking for is color change showing I hit the spot. Due to my applying too much product it took a good 48 hrs to dry without being tacky. And in the process of drying it had splotches of wet/dry in varying degrees. That said, it works great. Water beads right up. I think most of the complaints noted come from applying too much product as I did. I am going to try a sprayer next time to see if that will assist in applying a thin film. I would recommend testing whatever applicator you plan to use, what you plan to use it on, and let it dry to determine where you stand. It does come out of the can a thin milky color but applies clear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Be Careful; Follow directions-not like the old clear thin product. Read all the reviews here and on web I recommend the Thompson's Water Seal but with some caveats. It's important to read and carefully follow the directions. If you do that the product will work well. Do not apply Thompson's Water Seal to anything damp or wet; it will seal in the moisture and won't dry correctly (my experience anyway). If you are using new pressure treated lumber, make sure it's completely dry before sealing. I use a pad applier and a paint brush and work the product into the surface and remove any excess-thinner is better with this very effective product. Allow your deck, fence, etc to dry completely before applying this product if you cleaned it, pressure washed it, etc. Do not apply too thickly-apply a very thin coat and wipe off any excess. This is not the clear and thin as paint thinner product they used to produce. This product comes out of the can white and thicker than the previous product. That may be because this is a low VOC product so no brain cell killing fumes-I still recommend a respirator when working with any paint or sealant products but that's just me. I gave Thompson's a 4-not 5- rating because it's a product that can produce problems if you don't follow the directions carefully. Read other reviews on other sites before proceeding with applying this product so you can see what problems to avoid. I hope this is helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extend the life of your investment. It came in an easy open, easy pour gallon container and was very easy to apply. I used a large paint brush and just painted on a thin coat. A gallon goes a long way. I used it on my front and back brick stairs. You could also use it on wood and concrete. It didn't have a strong odor. I brushed it on, waited two days and tested it by spraying water on it. The water beaded right up! There was no color change to the brick, they look natural, not painted or treated. It dried clear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, but dried slowly Applied it in humid weather with a pump sprayer to our aggregate concrete deck. Because of the humidity, it wouldn't dry for over a week, but it did dry eventually. A thin layer was applied... enough to wet all the concrete. It does not make the concrete glossy or shiny, but it does make water bead up nicely, so it appears to be doing its job. It's been on a month and is doing well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great product My front porch is concrete and covers the storm shelter below. It requires sealing every few years to keep moisture out of the room. I have tried several products in the past years, but Thompson' WaterSeal seems to work best. I was able to pressure wash the porch and then put on three light applicationsof the sealer using a pressure sprayer and allowing each application to soak in and dry. I followed the 3 light applications with a heavier application and the porch looks great. The remaining sealer will be used on the back sun porch where I know it will do a great job sealing the concrete there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! Our sidewalks get stained from the iron in the water when the sprinklers are running. The iron in the water rusts, so the rust stains set in. Getting the rust stains off of the concrete sidewalks is no easy task and takes multiple pass overs to remove the staining. After so much work, sealing the concrete to prevent future staining is worth while. The Thompson's WaterSeal waterproofer works well as it is formulated to work on concrete among other surfaces. The application is easy once you read the instructions and each gallon covers a good stretch of sidewalk. So far, no recent rust stains have set in
