Can I stain wood after sealed with this product ?

Asked by: JG
Hello. Our products are meant to be applied to properly prepared bare wood surfaces only. Over a stain, paint or other coating, our products will not completely penetrate into the surface like they are designed to do. The end result would be premature wear and a lenghty dry time or they won't dry at all. Regards, Thompson’s WaterSeal Customer Support

Can you paint before or after using this product?
Asked by: dyi
Hello. Our products cannot be applied over paint or a recently applied stain. This is because our products are "penetrants" and must soak into the pores of the surface in order to work properly. As long as the surface is clean and dry, you can paint over the oil based Thompson's formula with an oil based paint 7 days after application, or with a latex paint 45 days later. We do not recommend painting over our water based Advanced formula. . Regards, Thompson’s WaterSeal Customer Support

Asked by: finster
Hello. Our products are meant to be applied outdoors only. Indoors, they could leave a strong, lingering odor and may not penetrate and dry as they would on outdoor surfaces. Regards, Thompson's WaterSeal Product Support

Customer Reviews

1 gal. Clear Waterproofing Wood Protector is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Clear vs. milky seems temperature related My main point in this review is to describe the following experience: Two days ago, I opened a new, metal gallon can of this product that had been sitting in the sun. I poured some in a smaller container so I could brush it onto my deck railings and balusters. It was clear in appearance and only mildly viscous; it brushed on very smoothly and looked great on the pressure-washed wood. I stored the can in the (unheated) garage overnight, when the temperature dropped into high 40s. The next day, I got the same can out around noon and opened it to pour some into my small container. As on the previous day, I rolled the can upside down several times to mix it. What came out was surprising - milky in appearance and much more viscous. I let it sit in the sun for a few minutes and then started brushing it. Within twenty minutes, the liquid I had poured and the rest in the can were as clear and runny as I had seen the day before. I don't know if this could be a total explanation for the consistency problem that other reviewers have complained about or not, but I was totally surprised to find product from the SAME CAN behaving these two different ways. I have not used a sprayer for Water Seal in years, but I feel quite sure that the more viscous, milky state liquid would not fare well in a sprayer. I like using this product. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I seem to have to re-apply it every spring to my deck - it would be great if it could pass the "splash test" at least two years in a row. I hope my review is helpful to somebody; I felt I should weigh in on the debate. It would be good if we could hear something from the manufacturer on this.

The problem is that the EPA has made them change the formula and taken the oil out and replaced the oil with something else therefore making the viscosity much thicker. A pump sprayer cannot be used in conjunction with this product even though it says on the can the best way to apply is with a pump sprayer. Tried to use a roller but did not work very well on my cedar fence. The best way to apply is with a brush which is very time consuming.

Thompson's WaterSeal Waterproofing Wood Protector is still the great product it has always been. Powerwashed my deck and after letting it dry for a week or two, applied Thompson's with a 9" roller and 3" brush for the railings. Adds a bit of a pleasant darker tone to the wood. Makes the rain water bead up after a rain. Hopefully it will help keep the deck good looking for longer than if I hadn't used any sealer at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps mold off wooden fence in damp area I bought a house with black mold covering the back fence. It's wet and damp for months because there is no direct sun in that area during wet winter months. The previous owner never treated the fence. I spent many hours scaping off the mold with a wire brush. Now I apply Thompson Water Seal every October before the rainy season begins. It makes the wood look great and the fence remains free of mold.
