Our deck was extremely greyed out and the boards were very dry from years of sun. This product was perfect for this kind of test. The Thompson WaterSeal is Semi-Transparent with a Medium Grain in Acorn Brown. We used a long handled stick with a roller made for semi-rough surfaces. It was easy to apply, covers quickly and leaves a rich dark color. It has rained since we applied and you can see the water beading up. It is a great water-proofer and will prevent future water damage and mildew. We also noticed that it left the deck with a smoother and even look.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by tp49 Worst deck stain/sealer I ever used.
I have stain/sealer my deck many times with the clear Thompsons. I used this
product last Fall. We had a very mild winter. Almost half of the product came off the wood. I am going to have to sand the entire deck and apply a different product. Terrible product. Don't waste your time or $.

beautiful color. I selected the semi-transparent so that I could see some of the natural grain come through, which was successful. The product goes on easily and a little goes a long way. It should be applied with a roller, not a brush, as the brush leaves strokes. After application, the water beads right up as seen in the picture. in the picture, you can also get a feel for the color as you can see the unpainted vs. painted wood. I would give it a 5 star, except that I am a little worried about the products durability after a year. hopefully when applied properly, it will wear well

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by hpiguy Rich color, Easy Application, Excellent all in one stain/waterproofer
I've been using Thompson's stain and water seal products for years.
I enjoy using them because they apply easily, dry fast and last a long time. The color from can to can is always consistent.
Acorn Brown is an excellent color for decks or fences. It penetrates the wood and looks wonderful. We applied this to our front fence and it blends into the landscaping perfectly. It covers the wood, but allows most of the grain to show through. It really makes the fence line pop from the street.
One of the biggest advantages was that we could simply apply it with a pump sprayer, the same kind of inexpensive sprayer you'd use for weed killer, then using a regular deck painting pad on a pole we smoothed out the stain onto the boards. We did 96 feet of three foot fence in just over 90 minutes, both sides. Less than 24 hours later it was completely dry, not tacky at all and soaked in well.
Clean up of the sprayer was easy with hot water and dish detergent.
I'll continue to recommend Thompson's products to friends and family.

I used this product last summer. I followed prep instruction, sanding ,cleaning and applied this product to my deck. It looked great for the first few months. Then winter came and after the snow melt, I noticed that the stain was peeling and chipping everywhere, Now I have to redo it all over again. I have used other Thompsons products before and was very satisfied. But product was very costly for it to last only a few months. There should be some kind of warning about using this product where it snows.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MarilynB Looks good, quick and easy, with great waterproofing!
This semi-transparent waterproofing stain is very easy to use and has soap /water cleanup. It is a bit thicker than I had expected (kind of like a pancake batter) and looks opaque until it dries. The thickness makes it easier to use with less dripping and mess than other waterproofers. The only mess I had was with trying to pour from the can (a longer pour spout would have been nice.)
I tested it on some pressure treated wood, and after sanding it, the stain absorbed well into the wood. The acorn color looks just like it does on the chart. It does repel water well, as the beading shows in the photo.
Although I enjoy staining with a water cleanup product, I don't like the idea that I can't store it in my garage during winter months like I could with my older oil version stains.
This is just the product I need to re-waterproof the wood in our utility trailer!

Applied Thompsons to a new and old deck. Both decks had been properly cleaned and applied as instructed. All horizontal surfaces are about 40% chipped within 6 months. Every time it rains more of it chips away. This product wasted my time and money.

I built a deck and a fence with severe weather pressure treated lumber and waited about 8 months before I stained it as you should while testing for moisture and so forth. I invested almost twice what this stuff costs for a water based semi-transparent stain from another big box competitor and discovered that the finish is flaking and peeling off after only a year. Now, I have prepped the surface by removing that finish down to bare wood and applied this water seal and could not be happier. You can tell a difference straight away with application and the color is a nice brown tone all while still showing off wood grain. One thing to not if you are in the same boat I am in. If you have applied a water-based finish before, you need to strip and open the pores of the wood for this to lay down properly or you will see fish eyes everywhere as it just will not stick. Don't make the same expensive mistake that I did, just do Thompsons first and you'll surely have a long lasting finish to be proud of.
