Answer:
Yes, but if you are able to power wash your old wood it will give a more accurate color appearance of the new stain.

Answer:
Based solely on our own experience doing this, I would not recommend putting this on PT lumber. I used PT 2 x 6's on the deck of two covered porches. Like most PT you buy these days, it was very wet when installed. I let it dry for 1 year then applied this product last summer. Nine months later it is coming off everywhere. Very disappointing results.

Hello David, fair enough question. And YES you can use this on pressure treated wood. It will take a bit longer to soak into the wood though. On a nice Sunny Day with low humidity I have noticed my treated wood sucks this stuff deep inside. I Love this Stuff! Hope this helped.

Answer:
This one is paraffin based and cleans up with water They also make "oil based" finishes.
Perhaps this link will help you in finding an oil based one:
http://www.seatosummitpressurewashing.com/information/deck_staining_101/
They are not near me, but have a good description of various stains, sealers and finishes on the web page.

Answer:
This is a water based product. If the stain is solidly adhering to the wood then you should be able to use a good latex based paint over it.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good stuff and good for 2~5 years depending on surface. The hardest part of doing this job is getting the weather and my available time to coincide. Cleaning up the overgrowth of plants takes more time than application. Perhaps Spring or Fall would probably be the best time to apply, when the plants can be trimmed back or not growing... Color / tone form gallon to gallon is good. They matched quite well. We used rollers, brushes and tried a 'garden sprayer' for the application. I used a 'long nap' 6" rough surface roller, and 2" 'disposable' brushes. No point in using a quality +$25 brush on the rough wood surface. I purchased a "Flo Master 1125d" specifically for this task last year. If you use a sprayer, make sure is is compatible for this task. The one I purchased at HomeDepot last year that was listed as suitable for this application. There are pictures of the paint/stain cans on the box. It proved absolutely unusable for this application; it was more of a mess than it's worth. My daughter, in her words; "I would love to write a burning review of that item", as she cleaned it.. We found the best method was: The long nap roller (with an extension pole/stick) was the fastest for the face boards, and brush to apply the product to end grain and between the boards. Pictures attached show a small section of the fence before/after. An aged, (+10 year old) section of fence (~14 feet long / 200 sq/ft) sucked in the preservative and needed almost a gallon. Obviously, your mileage will vary, perhaps I'm over applying.... But only another ~ 70' to go... September 6, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Good fence stain - bad deck stain Applied the stain last September after power wash and letting dry thoroughly. Applied with Wagner Sprayer. Picture below is of results after eight months. Getting ready to do deck over. I live in Central Oregon with 11 inches of moisture a year and snow on the ground for maybe 30-45 days a year. There is just something wrong with this products durability. The fence behind the deck is fine - the deck is unacceptable. May 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to work with We are very happy with this product. We used it after letting the wood dry for a day. The product was easy to use and the color was beautiful! It's only been a month so we have yet to see how long the stain will last. September 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great easy to use stain This stain was very easy to use. After I power washed my deck I applied the stain with a brush. It applied easily and covered very well. I was very happy with the maple brown color , very similar to the color I had before. The only problem I had was that my deck was older and had some areas where the old stain had worn off and I should have chosen a solid color stain as opposed to the semi-transparent stain. Certainly not a fault of the stain I used but I had some areas where the bare spots on the deck showed lighter than the rest of the deck. I did end up doing a second coat and it covered very well but with the older deck surface a solid color stain would have been better. All in all the deck came out very nice, good coverage and great color. Clean up was a snap with just water and soap. Dried quickly as well and water beads up very nicely on the deck. I would recommend Thompson's waterproofing stain to anyone looking to stain their deck. September 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by faded away I was very disappointed with this product ,Followed instructions to the letter and it only lasted a year just faded away . I wasnt a high traffic area either .would not recommend this product.SAVE YOUR RECEIPT YOU WILL BE RETURNING THIS April 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good product I recommend this waterproofing stain. For best results read and follow the instructions thoroughly. Start by preparing the surface so the stain adheres. My deck is less than 1 year old is in the sun most of the day. Once ready to go it rolled on smoothly and soaked in quickly. Coverage depends on how you apply the product. The color is light so the grain shows. July 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Thompsons Stain maple brown I have long been a fan of Thompson's waterseal and have used it on my deck for over 25 years. After power washing my deck back to the original wood my wife decided she wanted to use a atain instead of clear.the brown maple went on very easily using a long handle and flat deck brush. It covered very easily and because our temperatures were in the 80s it took only 15 minutes for it to dry and only one coat was needed to get full coverage. And it only needs to be repeated every four years. August 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Waterproofing Stain is OUTSTANDING & Nice Color Too! When looking for a waterproofing stain Thompson WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain stands out because of the color choices & ease of use. As you can see the back stoop was never sealed & this Maple Brown hid a few wood scars. The Stain went on easily & very quickly. Was able to get between boards with a brush because the stain is less thick than paint but more fluid than just plain stains or waterproofing liquids. When it came to clean up, it was a breeze! Soap & water cleaned the Roller & Brush quickly. The dry time is quick also. Before writing this review the tackiness was a dry surface with a hint of moisture but not sticky in any way. Made the back stoop look much better. A little went a long way too! Now if it only was a little less expensive... August 30, 2015
