Customer Questions & Answers

Can you use this stain on pressure-treated wood?

Asked by: David
Yes. But read the directions first. I would let the pressure treated wood sit for a couple of months before applying a stain if it was me.

Is it water based or oil based stain?

I have old based stained deck and would continue like to use oil base stain / sealer. Is Thompson's WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain Semi-Transparent Maple Brown oil based stain ? Thanks!
Asked by: Joe
This is a water based product. That is one of the features that I liked the most about it.

Can you latex paint over the top of this semi-transparent stain?

Need to paint each picnic table with a different primary color
Asked by: wasteofmoney1
This is a water based product. If the stain is solidly adhering to the wood then you should be able to use a good latex based paint over it.

1 gal. Semi-Transparent Maple Brown Waterproofing Stain is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Deck Finish Product We used Thompson's Water Seal Stain on a very large deck at a previous house that we owned and had great experience with it. At our current house we tried a new deck coating product, and it did not perform well at all. We have scraped all of that off and gone back with this Thompson's Water Seal. I love this product. I won't ever use another deck finish product again. The directions are very clear and easy to follow. The 1 gallon can works great, and pours well. The stain is easy to apply. Clean up directions are easy to follow. I simply don't have any negative experiences with this product to report.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff and good for 2~5 years depending on surface. The hardest part of doing this job is getting the weather and my available time to coincide. Cleaning up the overgrowth of plants takes more time than application. Perhaps Spring or Fall would probably be the best time to apply, when the plants can be trimmed back or not growing... Color / tone form gallon to gallon is good. They matched quite well. We used rollers, brushes and tried a 'garden sprayer' for the application. I used a 'long nap' 6" rough surface roller, and 2" 'disposable' brushes. No point in using a quality +$25 brush on the rough wood surface. I purchased a "Flo Master 1125d" specifically for this task last year. If you use a sprayer, make sure is is compatible for this task. The one I purchased at HomeDepot last year that was listed as suitable for this application. There are pictures of the paint/stain cans on the box. It proved absolutely unusable for this application; it was more of a mess than it's worth. My daughter, in her words; "I would love to write a burning review of that item", as she cleaned it.. We found the best method was: The long nap roller (with an extension pole/stick) was the fastest for the face boards, and brush to apply the product to end grain and between the boards. Pictures attached show a small section of the fence before/after. An aged, (+10 year old) section of fence (~14 feet long / 200 sq/ft) sucked in the preservative and needed almost a gallon. Obviously, your mileage will vary, perhaps I'm over applying.... But only another ~ 70' to go...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thompsons Stain maple brown I have long been a fan of Thompson's waterseal and have used it on my deck for over 25 years. After power washing my deck back to the original wood my wife decided she wanted to use a atain instead of clear.the brown maple went on very easily using a long handle and flat deck brush. It covered very easily and because our temperatures were in the 80s it took only 15 minutes for it to dry and only one coat was needed to get full coverage. And it only needs to be repeated every four years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Not Hold Up As Advertised! Thanks to Raybrook for posting his picture. Our deck looks exactly like his. We applied this on 1 year old dry, pressure treated deck boards on two covered decks and steps. We applied as per directions with very poor results. Thompson warranties this product for 4 years but after just 9 months time it looks exactly like that picture. We are in the process of finding out if Thompson stands behind their claim to reimburse fully if not satisfied. Would not recommend for decks or porches.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good fence stain - bad deck stain Applied the stain last September after power wash and letting dry thoroughly. Applied with Wagner Sprayer. Picture below is of results after eight months. Getting ready to do deck over. I live in Central Oregon with 11 inches of moisture a year and snow on the ground for maybe 30-45 days a year. There is just something wrong with this products durability. The fence behind the deck is fine - the deck is unacceptable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to apply, dries fast Like that this is more of a thin paste than just a liquid, it makes it very easy to apply with a brush. We applied it to brand new pressure treated wood on a trailer deck, and it looks great. I did two boards at a time and don't see any brush marks. Not sure how long it will last on a trailer but says 4 yrs on a deck so will probably depend on how hard we use the trailer. You can see a little of the green on the pressure treated wood since this is a semi transparent. I also did a regular 2x4 piece to see the color difference and it wasn't very different, just a bit lighter on the untreated wood. Overall very pleased with the end product. Love the easy water cleanup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good product I recommend this waterproofing stain. For best results read and follow the instructions thoroughly. Start by preparing the surface so the stain adheres. My deck is less than 1 year old is in the sun most of the day. Once ready to go it rolled on smoothly and soaked in quickly. Coverage depends on how you apply the product. The color is light so the grain shows.
