NEED REPLACEMENT

Product didn't work as advertised on label. Bought 3 containers of this item used it outside on wood, now it completely peeled off on some sections. I can send you pictures. I would like this item replaced because it didn't do what the label said it would do. Replace my 3 containers.

If you showed your pre prep work, then picture after and sent all the details to Thompsons as suggested by warranty they should get back to you.

can this be used on softwoods like douglas fir?

can this be used on softwoods like douglas fir?
Asked by: Danny
Hello. As long as the douglas fir is completely porous, our products will be successful. This is determined by the water splash test, which is listed on the back of our labels. Regards, Thompson’s WaterSeal Customer Support

1 gal. Semi-Transparent Sequoia Red Waterproofing Stain is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great For Treating Deck/Patio Wood I use this (various colors) at least two times a year for our wood deck/patio. The deck is redwood and 38 years old! So it can get weather beaten pretty good. I typically use Thompson's water sealer on it in the early spring and late fall; both on the cusps of rainy season. I live in coastal Southern California, so this also serves as a dew/mildew/rot protector as much as it does actual rain. It comes in gallon can and is easy to pour. Years ago, I would stain the deck with a paint brush. Now days, I use a paint roller on a stick so I don't have to bend over. It is very simple to use this way. It does not however, work with a garden sprayer. I do the top and side of the deck which is approximately 20x15 feet and have ample stain left over -- usually about half a can; so one can lasts a year for me. Since I do it twice a year, I only use one thin coat and it keeps it going with excellent coverage. I sometimes change up the shade of color and vary between light, medium and dark wood tones. Note, that if you use a dark color tone, it may take a few years for it to bleach out with weather conditions. During those years, I have always used clear coats. The stain drys clearly, but I don't walk on it for 24 hours. It repels all moisture nicely. I have attached a before and after comparison photo.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I used this stain on part of my deck last year, on pressure treated wood that was allowed to dry ... I used this stain on part of my deck last year, on pressure treated wood that was allowed to dry for about 1 month after construction. I chose this becasue it was water based, because the label said it could be used on wet or dry wood and I wanted to get it treated before the snow. I chose to only do a small section becasue I saw some questionable reviews on the product and I wanted to see how it behaved through the winter before doing the much larger section. I am not sure if it works as well as the older oil based version I had used on a previous deck (amazing stuff) but it still stood up very well to many freeze/thaw cycles and extremely heavy traffic in and out of the back door (2 kids and a 90lb lab). I saw a few areas where it appeared to fade, but it never peeled. We have had an extremely wet spring so far and the part that was treated handled the wet much better than the untreated wood. The pressure treated areas I didn't treat almost looked soaked through, soggy. I also noticed that the untreated areas aged more over the winter (splits/cracks/ traffic stains) so I decided to finished the remainder of the deck this weekend. I am happy with it. My wife wants a different color now, she doesn't 'love' the orange, so I'm not sure how long we'll be waiting for this to fade. Something tells me she'll be waiting a few years based on how well the first part stood up. It's very easy to apply and clean up was a breeze. I have read that changing to a different oil based stain now will be an issue because of the waxes in this stick around (the reason I choose to give it 4 out of 5), but I have no intentions of trying that. When we finally change shades I'll stick with Thompsons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS COLOR I can only say right now this is a preliminary rating and if I have a reason to update this review for cause I will. It's still very much winter weather and I got four gallons of the lighter Sequoia Red Thompson's Water Stain to go as an accent to the darker solid Red Sequoia Thompson's I applied to the my fence last year. This will go for my T-11 skirting covering the lower foundation. Idle hands being the devil's work according to mom, I was curious about the color and had a room in a rental that had some rough sawn wainscoting in a utility room. I know it states outside stain, but that is for elements and weathering and indoor finish stain tends to cost more, harder to apply, so why not save some money, check the color and put on a finish to a cedar that was starting to darken. I didn't pull out the compressor and gun as I would for the big job, just a few cheap stain brushes, tarp and painters tape. The color looks great against the semi-gloss slate gray with rust trim. A nice overall lodge look in a room that could be used for anything from a study, small guest room to a hobby shop. By simply repainting the trim and walls this color goes well with many other combinations as well, yet it's really the outside purpose for your deck, fence or other that you'll most likely be looking at. While I was at it, I made sure to bring in a section of the house skirting to stain and replace from the backside of the house. The skirting just covers the foundation so removing and replacing left me no exposure problems and gave me a good idea of how things will match up come spring. Why I constantly build up projects to keep me from taking a long vacation is going to have to be between me and a therapist someday and I suppose eventually I'll have to deal with the wife on it as well. Something to be said about working with your hands and a finish product that you're proud of that seems so fulfilling. The stain is going to make a beautiful contrast between dark and light of the same color. The Thomson's I've had on the fence has had no problems, this is just lighter and not being walked upon so I don't expect any problems from it either. I do plan on installing in a small deck on that rental next summer if time allows. If I use the lighter Sequoia or darker I'm not sure because I do like how this gives Fir a Redwood appearance. As I said the dark on the fence of the same brand has been great and do not expect any different from the more transparent. Of course if it does I will readdress this review to explain the problems or what the dissatisfaction might be as always. Thompsons has a tremendous guarantee on it's product, costs of application and or removal of the product if it is faulty. That in of itself almost makes Thompson's product a no brainer to go with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Stain and Waterproofer All In One. Great Color Coverage I've been using Thompson's stains for years and this Sequoia Red is the latest color I've tried. I like this color quite a bit. The tone is deep and rich, and being Thompson's I don't have to apply a separate sealer after I'm done staining. I used this to stain and protect a new window box and a cactus garden planter I built. The planter was old grey oak wood and the window box was brand new pine. Application was fast and easy with a small roller and the stain covered fast and soaked into the wood as it is supposed to. Both turned out great. I'll keep recommending Thompson's Waterseal products for all outdoor wood stain and protection. They work well and they apply easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stuff is great, super easy! I've never stained or done deck refinishing before and I was really nervous how this would come out. I cannot believe how simple it was. I couldn't mess up even if I tried. Prep your surface, brush it one...done. Looks great, really helped cover up issues and blended mismatched boards well. No odor, easy application, easy cleanup. I highly recommend this stuff! My deck was TERRIBLE (see photos). I gave it a good sanding with 36, them 60, then 120.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Beware I bought this product to help me refinish my old deck last summer. The whole structure was completely sanded, cleaned and I painted the deck with this product. Big project. The color was initially pink but then as it was drying it started to change to match the color on the can. 12 months later I have sections that are pealing or worn out. We are not talking about high traffic areas. I decided to completely replace my deck boards and probably will need to strip and repaint railings as well. I will not buy this product again and I don't recommend it. Guaranteed to last 4 years but it won't even last for 12 months? I haven't spoken to their customer service yet so I don't know what their response will be. At the same time I repainted my other deck using Behr and the surface is still in great shape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality Stain with a Beautiful Color This is a great, thick stain that offers really rich color while still allowing for some of the wood to show through. Application: I used this for a recently installed fence and applied via paint sprayer (followed by brush). For the smoother sections of fence, one good coat was enough to provide coverage. For the rougher sections of fence, I did need to use 2 coats. The finish is indeed semi-transparent with a slight satin finish. I also applied to a small, older deck. (The wood had grayed). I don't think the stain looks as good on the older wood- it looks more like a paint with a heavier shine to it. Don't be alarmed by the application color: It goes on a thick, almost opaque pinkish red. It's not attractive. But when it dries it appears semi-transparent and a much richer sequoia red. All in all this is a great, thick stain that adds a rich color to wood. Highly recommend.
