1) I bought this product at a local Home Depot store over a period of time to install on a custom fence that I was building. (See images.) I thought this would be the best product because of the long-standing Thompson's name. My project start in May of 2015 and continued through August. (I purchased lots of treated lumber, posts, and the water seal.) The guarantee on the can was also another draw, as I hate redoing projects-especially painting large quantities of fence. I'm not an amateur at this, so each strip of lumber was dried for weeks, then sanded prior to painting. The product itself is a cross between a gel and a watery paint. It looked great leading into the winter, but I live in Colorado and we get snow and up to 100 degree temps here. Keep in mind I followed what the can said to do (a drip test on the material you wish to apply it on).
2) 8 months after install--say March 2016--I started noticing the product chipping, flaking, and peeling off the surface of the wood. I was alarmed and horrified at the thought of having to strip and repaint the entire fence.
3) I e-mailed the company per the info on the can and didn't get a reply. So I called the company's customer service number and they initially stated they would refund half of what I purchased and would send stripper. Keep in mind the can CLEARLY STATES they will not refund for labor to reapply the product. They asked me to submit a claim with the receipts I had and they would refund me for only that amount and send "complimentary" stripper. Customer service stated that you should typically allow 6 months between installation of wood to the time you apply their product. "Professionals typically know that," they said.
4) The stripper and refund check (including tax) came. I used the money to buy a power washer to use with the stripper and some paint to match the color of the existing stain on the fence.
Now I normally do not complain, as I do prior research and make sure something is done right the first time. I've never had an issue applying Behr or Kilz paint. And I've painted multiple projects outdoors.
At this point, once my fence is stripped, I'll go back and repaint with an exterior paint, rather than using Thompsons. For $27 a can, this product did not live up to my expectations and only caused frustrations. I’m not looking forward to the time, energy, and money it’ll take me to redo my entire fence.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RickyN29 This stuff is great, super easy!
I've never stained or done deck refinishing before and I was really nervous how this would come out.
I cannot believe how simple it was. I couldn't mess up even if I tried. Prep your surface, brush it one...done. Looks great, really helped cover up issues and blended mismatched boards well.
No odor, easy application, easy cleanup. I highly recommend this stuff!
My deck was TERRIBLE (see photos). I gave it a good sanding with 36, them 60, then 120.

I bought this product to help me refinish my old deck last summer. The whole structure was completely sanded, cleaned and I painted the deck with this product. Big project. The color was initially pink but then as it was drying it started to change to match the color on the can. 12 months later I have sections that are pealing or worn out. We are not talking about high traffic areas. I decided to completely replace my deck boards and probably will need to strip and repaint railings as well. I will not buy this product again and I don't recommend it. Guaranteed to last 4 years but it won't even last for 12 months? I haven't spoken to their customer service yet so I don't know what their response will be. At the same time I repainted my other deck using Behr and the surface is still in great shape.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by ClaireS Great Coverage - Good Color
I've stained the fence and some other furniture and decided I would tackle the picnic table. I wanted to get this done before there was too much weather damage to it.
The table is plain old generic pine. I got the table from a flea market vendor.
My only problem was coverage. That was my fault. I did not let the first coat dry before I started the 2nd coat and one of the benches looks like I was wiping it off, more than wiping it on. I LOVE the color. It contrasts so nicely with the plain cedar fence color. I am attaching the color grid to provide an instant comparison.
The brush was easy to clean and the fumes were not overwhelming.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by hpiguy Quality Stain and Waterproofer All In One. Great Color Coverage
I've been using Thompson's stains for years and this Sequoia Red is the latest color I've tried.
I like this color quite a bit. The tone is deep and rich, and being Thompson's I don't have to apply a separate sealer after I'm done staining.
I used this to stain and protect a new window box and a cactus garden planter I built. The planter was old grey oak wood and the window box was brand new pine. Application was fast and easy with a small roller and the stain covered fast and soaked into the wood as it is supposed to.
Both turned out great.
I'll keep recommending Thompson's Waterseal products for all outdoor wood stain and protection. They work well and they apply easily.

This is a great, thick stain that offers really rich color while still allowing for some of the wood to show through.
Application: I used this for a recently installed fence and applied via paint sprayer (followed by brush). For the smoother sections of fence, one good coat was enough to provide coverage. For the rougher sections of fence, I did need to use 2 coats. The finish is indeed semi-transparent with a slight satin finish.
I also applied to a small, older deck. (The wood had grayed). I don't think the stain looks as good on the older wood- it looks more like a paint with a heavier shine to it.
Don't be alarmed by the application color: It goes on a thick, almost opaque pinkish red. It's not attractive. But when it dries it appears semi-transparent and a much richer sequoia red.
All in all this is a great, thick stain that adds a rich color to wood. Highly recommend.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Powergroove Started coming off after 1st winter.
I washed my deck with soap & water. Pressure washed it after that. I then allowed it to dry for a week. No rain during that week. I applied it to my deck, took about a week to finish the whole thing. No rain during the week I was applying it either. It looked really good when I was done, I was very pleased. The next summer I started noticing spots that it was coming off. I put a lot of time and work into this and was very disappointed that it didn't last as long as the can claimed it would.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MomtheBuilder Playground Looks Brand New!
This stain is very simple to apply. I used brushes and rollers to re-color and seal the (redwood and pressure treated) playground I built for my kids. The color goes on evenly, it makes the wood look brand-new. We will see how it weathers the Las Vegas heat and sun over time. I'd definitely use it again based on the finished product.
