Answer:
There is a metal seal to the can. I think I just used a screw driver to punch a hole through it.

Answer:
The label and instruction say not to dilute it.
You could dilute it but it will not protect as well.
Based on the CAS (MSDS) sheet and the label I would guess it is waterbased and water would be the appropriate material to dilute with.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by very good stain The product was easy to use. Covered very well. Will definitely use again. May 29, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Be prepared for bright red when first applied. This stain goes on very bright and will tone down when dry. The product is thick and should be well agitated prior to application. It covers well, but I am still a little concerned about the brightness of the cedar color. If you want a brighter color, this is the one for you, but be prepared when it is first applied. It is an easier clean up over oil-based products. If you over spray anything, it will wash off with water. May 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I like this sealer I have used this product in a couple different colors and it works good. It is very thin and spreads easily. Follow the directions and don't be tempted to go too thick. I had it on some out door items for a year and it still looks really good. One thing I did have trouble with is keeping the brush marks out. It is pretty thin, so you might be able to spray it, but I didn't have luck doing that. July 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks brand new! After pressure washing my deck and using this product and doing a double coat application, I have to say my deck looks brand new! WOW! Considering my deck is already 17 years old. This product works wonders. Water sealing really worked as well as the water beads formed, when it rain after 4 hours of drying time with the temperature about in the mid-eighties and sunny. I was worried when the rain came. But was really relieved and satisfied when the water sealing property really worked with that amount of drying time. For a first time user of this product, I am impressed! September 24, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Magic in a can The Thompson's WaterSeal stain I got is perfect from Home Depot. Semi-transparent Woodland Cedar . I tested it out on a step of the deck in the yard. Perfect! and the wife loves it too. I am going to apply it also to my Wooden park bench over the next few days when weather is warm and clear. It rained a little last night and you can see the test area in the picture how the water beads up off the deck. Thats great!! Our deck is in the back portion of my yard and gets a great deal of sunlight during the day. This all in one product is great. It stains, it seals and last all season long. I like that just like new look so I actually apply the sealer down late spring and again in the fall. It keeps the water out of the wood and prevents mother nature from ruining my prized creations. What more can you ask for. Really good product. June 17, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Waterseal - Semi-transparent Woodland Cedar I have ramps at my house and they are wood so I always waterproof them with water sealant and used the Thompson's Semi-transparent Woodland Cedar this time. It coated well and went on over the wood which is old and seated the few stud holes. June 29, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible Orange Color After investing $2k into our backyard fence, I'd read that I needed to stain/seal it to protect it from the elements. After doing extensive internet research into all the different products out there (oil, acrylic, various opacities, etc.) I decided on Thompson's semi-transparent in woodland cedar. It had 16 reviews on the HD website, with an average of 5 stars. Wow, I wish that I had not. I should have known off the bat that something was wrong, as the stain coming out of the can had a pinkish color to it. I'd read a couple places on the web that this was normal, so I took a deep breath and started brushing. After 4 hours, I'd completed one side of the fence and thought the color had a "fake" orange-brown look to it. I hoped it would change overnight and settle in to a nice brown, but it did not. Now my wife and I have a fence that neither of us like and I can't coat over it, as a second coat "beads up". I only hope that in time the sun will fade this color, and in a couple years I can do it again. I would use an oil-based product next time. November 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Product I applied to a new dock. Applied very nicely, rolled on brushed smooth. Looks great, water beaded off. Will update review in a year. May 31, 2015
