Questions & Answers

Best application method on exposed wood, under porch ceiling for wood sealer. Do I use a roller or brush or sponge, etc

Asked by: ape
For under porch ceilings I prefer to spray the wood sealer. This seems to get in between the boards well and avoids the mess that brush or rollers can cause on the floor below. I usually spray a thicker coat on first for penetration then the second coat for surface protection. On deck surfaces and exposed wood, such as railings and steps I use a brush or roller first for penetration then the second coat with a spray gun to highlight the surface of the wood.

I just completed a new Alaskan yellow cedar deck and wanted to highlight the color of the wood. I selected Thompson's WaterSeal Solid Harvest Gold Solid Stain to seal and protect the wood.. The stain soaks into the wood well and gives the wood surface a golden glow. The first coat we sprayed on to get saturation between the boards and the second coat was rolled on for depth. The overall effect is very satisfying to look at and I know the waterproofing quality of Thompson's WaterSeal will keep the deck protected from the weather for a long time. I am very pleased with the quality of this product.

Thompson's Water Seal Waterproofing Stain Solid Harvest Gold color works fantastic. We power washed our old wooden fence to remove a lot of mold and mildew and take away the dark grey color before staining. Have to be careful using in the heat once it gets up around 90. It is water based and cleans up easy with soap and water. As you can see with the picture, even though it says it is solid stain color, some wood grain still shows through and looks great. Made it look new again, now will have to see if it holds up. Great company, can't go wrong with this stain.

After cleaning the deck we proceeded to spray the waterproofing stain , it goes on very nice, spraying makes it much easier to apply but some areas required a brush or applicator. The weather must be dry and warm for the stain to properly dry, it seemed to dry pretty quickly to the touch but we waited to walk on it for a few hours. I really like the way it looks. It states it should last a couple years, I really hope so, the last sealant we used only lasted 1 year.

This product is awesome just like every other Thompsons product I have used. Thompsons is always my go to brand. I cleaned my 17 year old deck and brushed one coat of Thompsons on and what a difference! Application was a breeze and cleanup was easy. Cleaning your project first is a must however to bring out thr the brightness. Omce dry my deck beads water like crazy and looks almost like it did when new. Its been a few weeks and several storms...so far so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pretty Color I applied this stain to the flooring of a portion of my deck which is old and has many blemishes. At first I thought it was an inferior product because it wasn't covering up the wood. Then I realized I was using a short matted roller cover instead of a fluffy one. Once I changed roller covers, the stain went on so smooth and covered the old deck flooring with ease. The color is pretty, especially when the sun shines on it. I love that everything cleans up with soap and water. Because my deck is older, I will be applying another coat of stain. I think on a fairly new deck, one coat might be enough though. On the next section of decking, I plan on using this color for the steps and railings. I think I might buy some small paint pads to apply this stain with. I either didn't have the right brush for touch up spots or it doesn't apply well using a brush. I really won't know the answer to this issue until I start the next section. I gave it 5 stars because it is worthy of them. Only time will tell how it holds up or if it peels like other brands I have tried in the past. So far I am happy with this solid stain by Thompson.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now in colors. I have been using regular Thompson's WaterSeal for decades,I know a decade is a long time but when you find a product that works you stick with it. I just put up a new fence and there is nothing uglier then a fence slowly turning gray.So I was going to water seal it but the boards natural colors were very inconsistent and varied widely. Harvest Gold looked like it would be a great color to apply to the fence. So with roller in hand off I went. The fence looks fantastic and is even in color not one board darker or lighter then the other. There is a 15 year warranty but I will still re apply in 5 to 7 years because of all the rain we get in the northwest. You really cant go wrong with Thompson's products and this one is Excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best water seal you can buy. Thompson's water seals are the best. I've tried others to save a buck, but I always end up getting Thompson's to get the job done right and protect the wood. This goes on easy and didn't change the deck too much, my wife and I love the color of natural wood. Very happy with this product and would strongly recommend it to anybody that wants to protect their investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Results on Weathered Deck The back deck on the house is 28 years old and has reached it's design life. However, about 8 years ago the 2X6 deck boards were carefully removed, turned over, and re-nailed back onto the support beams, revealing a fresh surface. To further extend the life of the deck, I have now decided to protect it with Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain in Harvest Gold. The solid formula was chosen due to the age of the deck. Surface preparation consisted of pressure washing and cleaning before application. I’m astonished at how good the deck looks now. It’s like a new deck Applying the Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain is very simple using an outdoor deck pad, deep well tray, and extension pole. It only requires one coat, applied liberally. The only word of caution is to not stop and restart along lengths of boards, or there can be a noticeable (minor) change in color. Cleanup is very easy being it’s a water-based formula. I highly recommend using Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing (Solid) Stain for extending the life of aged and weathered decks. Of course rotten boards must be replaced.as needed.
