I have two projects on the agenda and the first was the front steps. I wanted to try the stain on a smaller project first. As always, I follow the instructions carefully in fairness to the manufacturer and to myself as well as safety precautions. The gel type consistency was surprisingly easy to work with, using a brush on the wood steps. I did apply a second coat after light sanding with a 120 grit, to bring out just a bit more richness in the color. I also applied a "traction sand" for better safety, when the second coat was applied. It seemed as if this gel type stain worked exceptionally well with traction sand added to the 2nd coat. Another reason for adding a second coat, as I was altering the characteristics of the product, and wanted a base coat precisely to "Thompson's" specs. Time will be the real test, but so far I am pleased. The finished appeal is very pleasant to the eyes, and it seems to be a stronger base and even looks tougher. It looked beautiful after the first rain and I was smiles.

We've used Thompson's brand before and so decided to try this solid cedar stain on our deck, our back steps, and one side of the house that had been battered by a wind storm. Coverage was exceptional, and application was easy. Fast drying time. Sealed well, too, against the subsequent rain we got.

I liked the look of the unfinished wood on the railing of our back patio so I decided not to stain it. As you might guess that nice look didn't last long. I've had to use wood cleaner every year to keep it decent looking. Four years in and I've finally grown tired of the yearly ritual. I chose a solid stain since the wood shows a little wear. I used a brush and roller to apply the Thompson's WaterSeal. I kind of rushed it in an attempt to beat the heat but I'm very happy with the results. The stain went on very easy and dried quickly. This solid stain works wonders. You can't tell that the wood is four years old. I have no complaints but I have one piece of advice. Test the stain in a small area first to make sure it's the color you want. I would have preferred a darker color but this will work. The issue is that with stain, if you don't like the color, changing it is a lot of work. Applying new stain on top of existing stain really doesn't work. At any rate Thompson's WaterSeal is an excellent product that I highly recommend.

3 years in Florida weather took a tole on my privacy fence. The solid ceder covered a lot of stains in the wood. To prep I just used bleach in a garden sprayer and hosed it off. then applied 1 cote, thats all it took, looks like a new ceder fence now.

I've been using Thompson's stain and waterseal products for years.
I enjoy using them because they apply easily, dry fast and last a long time. The color from can to can is always consistent. Since it's premixed at the factory we never had to worry about the next gallon being a different color, though they do recommend blending the cans if you have a huge surface to cover, just to make sure.
Woodland Cedar in the solid tone is an excellent color for deck surfaces. It has that classic cedar/orangish look to it. It penetrates the wood well and looks wonderful. We had stained our deck about 7 years ago and it was finally in need of a new coat. This Woodland Cedar is the closest tone to the color we used 7 years ago.
We cleaned the deck with wood cleaner and then let it dry. To apply this stain we used a regular roller on a long pole and poured the stain into a paint tray. The entire deck (20x16) took under 45 minutes to coat. It goes on very fast and without any hassle.
Less than 24 hours later it was completely dry, not tacky at all and soaked into the old wood well. It covers up most of the grain of the wood, and being older beat up wood on the deck, that is a look we preferred.
We cleaned up the roller with hot water and dish soap.
The Woodland Cedar tone is rich and covers up most of the grain, but still lets some through, so it doesn't look like you painted the deck. I'd recommend this to anyone needing to coat a wood deck.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by sferguson326 It's from Thompsons!
I received this product to test and it works just as I knew it would. I have used many Thompsons products over the years and I have never been disappointed. It seems like everything that I have used delivers. This is the solid stain, so if you're looking to have the woodgrain present then you should use the clear or semi-solid products. if you are looking for a solid stain then this gives a deep rich color.

I was a little concerned that this 'solid' stain might cover the wood grain almost like paint. I'm pleased to report that it does not. The wood grain shows through the stain. The waterproofing is supposed to last 3 years, so time will tell. The stain/waterproofer can be applied by sprayer, roller, brush, or other applicator. Easy water cleanup. Looks great.

So happy with this product! The solid stain looks great and I found it to be more forgiving than regular Cedar Stain when applying with a brush. The results look great! Would highly recommend this Solid Woodland Cedar Waterproofing Stain. I cannot comment on the longevity as this is the first time I've tried this product.
