I had a great handyman build us a beautiful deck for our above ground pool. He never said a word about needing to do anything with the pressure treated wood. So I never did. I recently saw an ad so Thompson s in the Sunday paper. Should I get some and treat my deck?

Answer:
Pressure treated wood does not need a sealer for the wood itself. But it is a good idea to use a water sealer on the wood to preserve its appearance. In several year's time, the original wood can fade, develop residue and even emit sap in certain instances. A good water sealer tries to remedy that.

Think of water sealer as a base coat of makeup/sunscreen on a person's face. In and of itself it does nothing. But without out, you expose the skin to natural elements that over time the face may not change but the skin will wrinkle, get blotchy and scar.
Thompson's is an excellent product. Just be sure to find the desired color on the can to match what you want to see on the deck. Even the clear coats have a small about of trace color. Read Less

Answer:
I don't know about a mechanized pressure sprayer. But I have tried with a hand pump air-sprayer and it was a disaster. The stain will not apply evenly. It will leave bubbles on the surface. It truly has to be spread with a brush or a paint roller that is made for decking.

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what we wanted! We purchased this to stain our picnic table and 2 wooden Adirondack chairs. We are going to be replacing our (small) fence this yr or nx and will use it for that as well. We wanted a nice brown stain, but still wanted to see the wood grain. Beautiful! Just like we wanted. My husband did it with a paint brush. It looks like chocolate milk when you are applying it... but it dries to perfection! Highly recommended! Remember to read temperature requirements. May 28, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Wish I hadn't put it on Having installed a new cedar deck I wanted to do the best thing I could to protect it. I purchased Thompson's WaterSeal transparent, Maple Brown. Before applying the stain I cleaned the deck with Thompson's 3 in 1 cleaner following the directions to a tee. The deck look fine after applying the stain in July of 2015. By May 1st of 2016 the deck looks like it is ten years old and 95% of the color is gone on horizontal surfaces. The vertical spindles have faded but the color is still there. On the can of stain it states that this product protects for 3 years and provides fade resistant color. So much for those statements. Since having this disaster I have spoken to three people that also have not had favorable results. One was a professional that stated he won't use the product as it is the worst! I now have a deck that looks awful and I don't know what to do to it. May 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Used on bare wood, happy enough with the result I used this to finish my custom patio table. If I were to do everything again, I would finish the wood before assembling the table because keeping a wet edge on a large area is incredibly difficult. Initially, I was concerned that the stain was so opaque out of the container, but the result as it dried was exactly what I had hoped for. Keep an eye out for drips (as with any stain I presume) because they are a pain to clean up after they've dried. They recommend only one coat but I think I may apply a second coat to get a darker color and a little more even finish. May 26, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great for a short time I applied this to our deck last summer and after the snow melt this spring noticed that the strain was chipping and peeling in multiple places. The color has also faded substantially since last year. I followed all the directions to the letter and used the recommended stripping and cleaning solutions but still ended up with disappointing results. This stain might work well in warmer climates without snow but I certainly can't recommend it for anyone dealing with Minnesota winters. March 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works great on pressure treated wood! used on new dog ear pressure treated fence. color goes on sort of pinkish brown. the color looks great once applied and dried. I used roller, brush, and sponge. sponge was easiest but seems to waste some product. brush works good but is very time consuming. roller worked the best but was hard for corners, which I used the sponge to finish off. dries fast and is thin enough to apply easily. I would not recommend using sprayer, I bought a 40 dollar sprayer from HD and it only made a mess. August 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fine result Easy to brush, dry very quickly. Requires a bit of preparation. Happy with result: effective waterproof sealing. June 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what my new fence needed. What a great product, water seal and stain, perfect! I just rebuilt my fence with pressure treated pickets and needed to protect them for moisture damage, but did not want clear. Getting even color coverage is a bit tricky, so be sure to read the instructions. As you can see, I am not finished yet. I am using a brush and a roller. Next time I will apply it before I build the fence. This is a great product, I am very happy with it! July 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great color great protection and lasts all season keeping your projects looking like new The Thompson's WaterSeal stain I got is perfect from Home Depot. Transparent Acorn Brown. I tested it out on a newly installed slop sick in the yard. Perfect! and the wife loves it too. I am going to apply it also to my Gazebo over the next few days as the weather is hot and clear. I also have a deck I may also use this stain color on or maybe use a slightly darker Cedar color stain as that is in the back portion of my yard and gets a great deal of sunlight during the day. I was also using just the clear Thompson's Waterseal the first time I applied the waterproofing to the deck. This all in one product is great. It stains, it seals and last all season long. I like that just like new look so I actually apply the sealer down late spring and again in the fall. Keep the water out of the wood and prevents mother nature from ruining my prized creations.
