Customer Questions & Answers

Is this only used on unfinished wood...we have a deck that had stain on it....and I am afraid the transparent won't cove

Asked by: Lou
Depends on what type of stain there was before applying this product. If oil-based - it might work. If poly or other synthetic types - you will have to strip it down...

1 gal. Transparent Maple Brown Waterproofing Stain is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great product! Easy application! I used 5 gal of the Transparent Maple Brown to cover my front porch floor. The color was applied to recently sanded pine. It took 2 coats & I cut around my walls & columns with a brush & rolled the rest. A medium nap roller worked the best. I was hesitant to use a sprayer in a confined space. The color looks high end. Not too orange. I did have to touch up a few areas with a brush. If you're using a roller try to stay in straight lines with the wood grain so you don't get streaks. Overall the product was easy to use & has the consistency of chocolate milk so it's not sticky.

We applied this to a deck in Aug. 2016. The color was nice and the product did seem to work at first; we saw water bead up on the stained deck - BUT only seven months later (in March 2017) the stain is already coming off and the bare wood is showing through. The label says it “1 coat protects 3 years on a deck.” Not true. It lasted for about half a year. I will not use this product again nor recommend it to anyone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Frustrated This product came out WAY, WAY darker than the pictures online, than the pictures on the can, and the pictures on their website. As a reference, its basic PTL pine from home depot with ONE coat. This keeps happening to me. Swatches never match examples never match pictures never match the final product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product at great price Last year I purchased a different waterproofing stain from a local paint store ($$) for our front deck. After less than a season, I was pretty disappointed with my choices until I found Thompson's Waterseal. This product, for half the price, has already done a much better job. I used it on our back deck that had never been waterproofed before, and have already had many compliments on it. The color in the transparent shade is perfect, nice but not too much to over power the wood The waterproofing aspect of it does what it is supposed to do. I have been very happy with the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Results were what I wanted I wanted to weather proof my tool shed without it turning gray by the end of the summer but I also didn't want it to look like it had been "painted" as a solid stain would do. This transparent stain gave me both wishes. I can still see the outline of the wood which is what mattered to me the most. I used a small paint roller and a couple of small paint brushes and the stain went on nicely. Clean up was a cinch with soap and water. Next will be my new bird house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Added beauty to an older deck Parts of my deck are newer than others, and I wanted to give it some color (as well as protect it) while still showing the natural grain of the wood. I chose the transparent stain, thinking it would achieve the look I wanted. After cleaning the wood, I began to apply the stain. While easy to apply, I initially felt it was a little too thin and watery, at first producing drips and color variations. I would have preferred it to be closer to the consistency of paint. As I continued, I was more careful and experimented with different rollers and brushes until I solved the problem. Funny, the color variations ended up working in my favor as the finished deck looks very natural. The stain actually looks better on the older wood than on the newer. I am very happy with the finished product, and after a recent rain, the water beaded on the wood showing me it is protected as well as beautiful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with the results I decided to re-finish our backyard fence to try and extend its life a little and make it look nicer by using this stain. Since I have no idea just how old the fence actually is, I wasn't sure if power washing would make a difference and allow the stain to penetrate. After allowing the wood to dry overnight, we applied the stain using a combination of rollers and paint brushes. The brush definitely worked better to get the coverage desired. My favorite thing about Thompson's transparent stain compared to their semi-transparent product is that there wasn't an issue with overlap or streaking. Of course you have to keep a wet edge, but it is much more forgiving than my experience with the semi-transparent stain. And the results were just what I wanted: 1) make the fence look uniform and 2) still see the wood grain

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use I first used it to waterproof the handrails around the deck (kind of as a test) and will soon use it for the actual deck. The first rain showed that the water now puddles on the wood rather than getting soaked up, so it works. The paint is a little thicker than normal stain and therefore it is easier to use and doesn't drip as much.
