Answer:
This product by Thompson's does add color to the wood; but they also make a transparent waterproofer, called Waterproofing Wood Protector, which we had been using. Once your deck is bleached out by the sun, maybe you'd want to try this stain, and this color is awesome. See photo!

Answer:
This is a STAIN. So it 'stains' the wood. It is a "transparent" stain on their scale, but it does change the color of the wood.

Answer:
Absolutely not. It is too thick to can through a normal "pump" sprayer.

Answer:
Yes, I used a tank sprayer to apply to new construction. It seemed to waste a lot of product from overspray on the ground. After about 10 gallons I switched to a roller and brush.

I've heard that applying a waterproofer can make a deck very slick if it rains or gets wet. Has anyone experienced this?

Answer:
No, it was far more slippery before we used this; but we had green moldy stuff growing on it in spots, and that was quite slippery!

No, this product is not like heavy porch paint of old. It soaks deep into the wood and leaves a light stain color on the surface of the wood.

Answer:
Not at all, it just beads up with rain which I guess you could slip on, but the surface is beautiful and you will love your experience! Don't worry, I have never had one that made me happier! It blends well so painting isn't as hard as darker stains that leave a line if double coated.

Answer:
It all depends on user experience. 1 vs. 5 gallon is just the quantity but the stain is still the same. I have used Thompson stains and they work just fine. You just make sure that you follow the easy directions printed on the container.

Answer:
No difference that I know of, maybe the 5 gallon version is not being mixed enough and not being mixed as it is being used.

1 gal. Woodland Cedar Transparent Waterproofing Stain is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our 25-year-old deck looks as good as new! Love the color, easy to work with stain/waterproofer! This summer has been so hot that we weren't really looking forward to working outside. But once it cooled off just a bit, we started waterproofing the deck. So happy that Thompson's waterproofing stain was really easy to work with! It looks absolutely great! Cedar is a close color match to what it looked like 25 years ago! This waterproofer dries quickly, and is the best treatment our deck has ever had! By the way, the previous waterproofer by Thompson's had an smell, chemical-like and rather unpleasant, but this product didn't seem to have a smell at all - at least to me. Husband said he could smell it, but I couldn't. The wood just soaked it in, and we are utterly amazed at how good it looks! The job went very quickly between the two of us, and we couldn't be happier with the end results! Our deck is the prettiest one on the block!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy Waterproofing This stain is light transparent and completely waterproof. Before taking it outdoor on my wooden bench, gate and chairs I tried it on my kitchen chopping block which I've owned for about thirteen year. The stain brought it back to life; the block looks like new. So, I poured water on it to make sure that it wasn't absorbed and I was delighted with my results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WORST STAIN EVER, LASTED LESS THAN 6 MONTHS Horrible! was easy to apply but LASTED LESS THAN 6 MONTHS, didnt penetrate at all! After one storm THE WATER WOULD NOT BEAD ON THE SURFACE AS ITS SUPPOSED TO!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use...great look! We have two expensive wooden Adirondack chairs that have been sitting in the Florida elements for almost three years. The color degraded to an ugly gray and we considered tossing them. Instead, we bought a pressure washer which made them look new again, and stained them using the woodland cedar stain. They turned out beautifully. The color is a little more orange than we thought but we're okay with it. The stain was very easy to apply. Keep in mind it's a little watery so use sparingly so you can catch drips. We'll see how the chairs hold up in the hot, wet summer months, but right now we're very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly satisfied with this stain This stain gave a new life to our deck, shed ramp, shed base frame and our mail post. Directions labeled on the container were very easy to follow. In fact, I did not have to do any prep work as it requires no primer. I used the spray gun on the deck, a roller on the ramp and brush on the mail post. It worked well with all three. We stained 2 coats on the deck to get a bit dark stain since it gets the sun all day. Talking about mail post, the stain looks so good that our neighbors thought we got a new post. Knowing the brand, I am not much worried about longevity. Go buy it, you will like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this product We love this cedar color. I was afraid it would be to red but it is just right. My poles were starting to get dark so we decided to stain them. I've used Thompson clear water sealer before so we decided to give their stain a try. It goes on very easy and a little goes a long way. Easy clean up also since it is water based. One coat will be plenty. And I am glad you can still see the wood grain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I couldn't be happier! I bought 1 gallon of this to stain and reseal all the wood on our 8'x9' hot tub. After stripping the tub with a pressure washer and letting it dry for a day, I got started. I was a little worried when I poured it into my paint tray. It was almost a flesh color. I was even more worried when I made the first brush stroke and that fleshy color was all over the clean wood. After about 15 minutes though, the cedar color set in and it is absolutely gorgeous. Coverage was super, I did one coat and see no need for a second one. I did the entire hot tub and still have about half a gallon left. I applied this with a cheap economy 4" paint brush and it worked perfectly. So easy that I went ahead and did the picnic table really quick while I was at it. This is one of the easiest to use products I've used in a long time. I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautified my 1-year old deck This was easy to apply with roller and brush and dries quickly. Clean up is easy with soap and water. It took 1.5 gallons to cover my 12ft x 12ft deck (144 sq.ft),despite the specifications saying a gallon will cover 300 sq.ft. Stain finish was slightly darker than I expected but very pleasing. The water sealing is promised to last 3 years on deck surface (horizontal) and 4 years on posts/fences (vertical). See the pictures for before and after comparison. I pressure washed the deck but used no chemicals, just water, in the morning. Then in the evening I applied the waterseal/transparent stain (the directions say shouldn’t be applied in direct sunlight, hence, evening). This proved to be a definite improvement of my deck, which is one-year old.
