Answer:
This product by Thompson's does add color to the wood; but they also make a transparent waterproofer, called Waterproofing Wood Protector, which we had been using. Once your deck is bleached out by the sun, maybe you'd want to try this stain, and this color is awesome. See photo!

Answer:
This is a STAIN. So it 'stains' the wood. It is a "transparent" stain on their scale, but it does change the color of the wood.

Answer:
Absolutely not. It is too thick to can through a normal "pump" sprayer.

Answer:
Yes, I used a tank sprayer to apply to new construction. It seemed to waste a lot of product from overspray on the ground. After about 10 gallons I switched to a roller and brush.

I've heard that applying a waterproofer can make a deck very slick if it rains or gets wet. Has anyone experienced this?

Answer:
No, it was far more slippery before we used this; but we had green moldy stuff growing on it in spots, and that was quite slippery!

Answer:
No, this product is not like heavy porch paint of old. It soaks deep into the wood and leaves a light stain color on the surface of the wood.

Answer:
Not at all, it just beads up with rain which I guess you could slip on, but the surface is beautiful and you will love your experience! Don't worry, I have never had one that made me happier! It blends well so painting isn't as hard as darker stains that leave a line if double coated.

Answer:
It all depends on user experience. 1 vs. 5 gallon is just the quantity but the stain is still the same. I have used Thompson stains and they work just fine. You just make sure that you follow the easy directions printed on the container.

Answer:
No difference that I know of, maybe the 5 gallon version is not being mixed enough and not being mixed as it is being used.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Our 25-year-old deck looks as good as new! Love the color, easy to work with stain/waterproofer! This summer has been so hot that we weren't really looking forward to working outside. But once it cooled off just a bit, we started waterproofing the deck. So happy that Thompson's waterproofing stain was really easy to work with! It looks absolutely great! Cedar is a close color match to what it looked like 25 years ago! This waterproofer dries quickly, and is the best treatment our deck has ever had! By the way, the previous waterproofer by Thompson's had an smell, chemical-like and rather unpleasant, but this product didn't seem to have a smell at all - at least to me. Husband said he could smell it, but I couldn't. The wood just soaked it in, and we are utterly amazed at how good it looks! The job went very quickly between the two of us, and we couldn't be happier with the end results! Our deck is the prettiest one on the block! August 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use...great look! We have two expensive wooden Adirondack chairs that have been sitting in the Florida elements for almost three years. The color degraded to an ugly gray and we considered tossing them. Instead, we bought a pressure washer which made them look new again, and stained them using the woodland cedar stain. They turned out beautifully. The color is a little more orange than we thought but we're okay with it. The stain was very easy to apply. Keep in mind it's a little watery so use sparingly so you can catch drips. We'll see how the chairs hold up in the hot, wet summer months, but right now we're very happy. December 15, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible! Did not penetrate the wood, thick, water based, going back I thought this would be like my last can of Thompson's water seal: penetrating to bring out the rich wood colors and grain. Instead, this was thick like paint. It beaded up on the deck and did not seep in as other Thompson's Water Seal does. One reviewer said this was watery. What I applied was thick and foamy. I only did one spot of my deck and am taking this stuff back. After drying, there was chalky orange pink color sitting on top of boards. I imagine Thompson changed the formulation. July 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by WORST STAIN EVER, LASTED LESS THAN 6 MONTHS Horrible! was easy to apply but LASTED LESS THAN 6 MONTHS, didnt penetrate at all! After one storm THE WATER WOULD NOT BEAD ON THE SURFACE AS ITS SUPPOSED TO! July 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Still Holding Up Well Under Porch It's been two years since I applied this Thompson's Waterseal to my redwood porch deck. The cedar color stain is only a shade darker than the natural color. I like how it soaked into the wood quickly and dried overnight. I did pressure wash and scrub some spots a few days before doing this job. I used a roller on a long handle and brush to apply the thin finish. My three sets of porch stairs that are always exposed to the sun have lost most of its protective finish and will be getting redone before the July rains come. I am satisfied with this product and will be using it again. I like being able to see the wood grain. April 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I have been staining for 40 years and this is the best. It is a very even color and shows the grain. It covers minor staining on the wood. It is very easy to apply because it is thin. Use one thin coat and it will never peel like others. Brushes only need 20 secs to clean. August 17, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does It's Job I applied the stain with a roller on the top of the table but it left bubbles, so I switched over to a brush and it made a world of a difference. The stain looks really good and works perfectly. It rained later in the day and water did not soak in. May 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Water Proof and Refresh the Look of Your Outdoor Wood I chose this product because my fences were looking pretty bad and being attacked by mason bees every spring. I decided to go with Woodland Cedar because I love cedar. I think clear would have been more the look I wanted, but I find that transparent looks very nice. It's a great way to update and refresh the look of your out door wood features, while water proofing it as well. I'm not sure if it's deterring the mason bees, but it's definitely repelling the water. I found this product went on even and smoothly and I was able to complete each fence section with ease.
