Answer:
Not anymore. The old formula went on fine with a standard garden pump-up sprayer, but the new formula (sometime in the past year) is too thick. You have to use a roller or brush, or likely both.

Answer:
No, this stuff does not work well in a sprayer. It will only come out in a thin stream and you will have to go back and brush or rub or roll it in to cover the wood adequately. I talked to Thompson's about this, and they confirmed this to be the case. They said the best way to apply it is to roll it on with a roller.

Can this be used with painted wood? If so, should the wood be painted before or after sealant?

I am looking to seal an outdoor play structure we are building, but we will also be painting parts of the play structure. Wondering if I should use sealer on all the wood and paint over, or just use exterior paint for the painted portions and sealer on the rest.

Answer:
Yes, paint the wood first and depending on where its location is inside or outside, and temperature, I would wait to seal at least 24 hours dry and 48 hours for humid conditions.

Only use stain or in this case, sealer, over unfinished wood.
It will NOT work over a painted surface. If you are going to place paint over all surfaces, I would recommend you to instead use an exterior-rated oil based primer.
Use that to seal and coat the wood, and then you can use an exterior-grade paint to go over that for the best protection.
No sealer will take out certain staining from the wood Read More

No sealer will take out certain staining from the wood grain, but a primer will.

Answer:
Yes, from my past experience using sealants. The surface should be free of dust and dirt before you begin. You may, depending on the surface, gently sand (fine paper) down and wipe surface clean when finished before applying sealant. Read and follow the directions on the can.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 28 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Surprisingly Easy Application This was my first time doing such a large project by myself. Instructions on the can were easy, the canister to apply the sealant was easy. I hesitated in doing the job, especially in the heat of South Florida. Also, since I am a woman, I was reluctant and kept telling myself, I should have a man do the application. It had to be done and it came out amazingly well! When spraying the surface of my fence, the sealant saturated and covered all surfaces well. The day after I was so proud of myself, especially since it was easier then I thought. My fence looks amazing and a few neighbors came over to compliment me on how well Thompson's Water Seal made a huge difference in the way my fence now looks. One thing, I should have worn a mask, due to the wind blow back during application on that day. Next time I will apply on a windless day. That was the only downside! June 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best product out there Thompson's Water sealer is a fabulous product, it seals and keeps the water on top of the wood. We used it for our enormous deck. I give it a 10!!!!! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Great - Have the Right Expectations I found this product to be excellent, because a) I did not expect to be spraying it; I planned to brush or pad it on from the beginning - this gets the product into the wood better than spraying. b) My pressure-treated pine was seasoned, clean, dry, and ready to absorb a sealer c) It is extremely hard to find a clear treatment which does not have some tint or opacity d) Seems quite a good value, and water still beads almost a year later Like anything, the product darkens the wood a little when you apply it. But after a couple of weeks of sun and drying, it looks really good, like new lumber. Doing a good job of prep-cleaning is probably one of the keys. June 11, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by New formula too thick to apply with a pump-up sprayer Just applied tonight (June 3, 2016) and can confirm previous reviews that the new formula is too thick to apply with a pump-up sprayer. The old formula would spray as a moderately fine mist, but the new formula is like trying to spray olive oil. I had mixed some of the new batch with some leftover I had from last year, and it sprayed OK, not great, but OK. But when I went straight new, it would only spray in a steady stream. I had to apply with a roller and brush for the rest of the deck. I will likely try a different product next year. June 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product I dont know why everyone's saying it won't spray. I use this product all the time on decks and fences and have zero problems with it. I have a mid-grade pump sprayer with a fan tip that i leave the product in all the time. I dont clean it, I just refill and it sprays perfectly. It gives dried wood a darker appearance for a number of months and can be reapplied with no further preparation. There are better products out there which cost much more, but there are much worse products that cost the same. I'd recommend this to anyone. May 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Thompson Water Sealer worked great on my wood I covered a deck that was over 20 years old that had never been treated before. It took a lot of the product to seal my deck as the wood was really in poor condition. After using 10 gal of the product on my deck it looks great and I expect the live of the floor to be extended many years. I recommend this product. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Thompsons on my Deck I just love the way this product made my deck look.It looks Great May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dissapointed I have used Thompsons sealer for the past 10 years. I have always used a garden sprayer to install on my deck. On this purchase of the 5 gallon bucket, the product was very thick and would not spray. I returned and picked up new 5 gallon can and 2, 1 gallon buckets. All were the same, and all would not spray, and all were returned for full $ return. Home Depot had no other clear sealer that was able to spray. I tried 2 different pump sprayers and 6 different nozzles with no results. Don't know if this was bad batch or changed formula, just would't spray. Stopped at Sherwin Williams on way home and picked up 5 gallon bucket of their product and everything sprayed the way the Thompson product used to work, but for twice the $. March 22, 2016
