I used this product several years ago with great results so never questioned using it again. Wrong answer! Evidently they have changed the formula and it is a thick milky substance that will not spray through a garden sprayer. The instructions state that one can be used, but I can attest to the fact that you will have a clogged sprayer that will not work. It also is far from a clear coating. Turned my deck very dark and I resorted to applying with a roller and brush. Spent nearly 4 hours doing a 30 minute job. It does seem to bead water ok but that's the only plus. Contacted Thompsons customer service about possibly thinning it with something but their only answer is to apply a thin coat?

I've used Thompsons on my deck for 25 years and have had minimal damage to the pressure-treated wood. Initially I used the red label formula but switched to the green formula about 5 years ago. The green formula is thicker and harder to apply but tends to last longer resulting in fewer applications. The product is a little pricey but in the long run it is way cheaper than replacing a deck.

I have just built 2 small table for my daughter's patio next to her pool. I knew the tables would get splashed and probably beer spilled on them so I decided I should coat the wood with somet5hing to protect. Thompson's has a good rep so I chose that. This is a coating that will go under a couple coats of Acrylic polyurethane. When I applied the Thompson's the grain and colors of the wood came out better than they do for just stain or varnish. I have never seen colors this vibrant. This product will be in my wood finishing arsenal from now on.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Catman Older product was good and applied easily with a tank sprayer .This one is terrible.
I have used this product every year for many years with good results. This year it is terrible.Like some of the reviewers said it has gone from a fluid ,clear slightly honey colored easy to apply product to a milky gooey impossible to apply with a tank sprayer mess .If you buy it , get out the paint brushes and prepare to spend hours to do a one hour job. Taking it back and will never buy it again.

Thompson's has some detractors (especially the "professionals"), and I don't use the Red Label, so I can't speak to that. But I've been impressed with the Green Label for us do-it-yourselfers.
I think that some of the complaints are due to the fact that the water beading fades in months ... on the first use. And it's almost invisible. My experience, starting with a 6 year-old deck, is that after the first application, water beaded for about 6 months. (Thompsons says that it protects, even after that, but I'm skeptical.) A year later, I applied again. After the second time, water beaded for a year. At the end of that year, I applied again. After the third time, it's been 18 months and water is still beading. It seems to be cumulative. Probably every other year is enough now.
I've found that 5 Gallons covers a 500 square foot deck pretty well, when applied with an inexpensive pump-up garden sprayer.

Had the same experience as the reviewer from 10/28/14 (Scof from Vallonia, IN). Product is very viscous and does NOT apply in a thin layer through a garden sprayer. It spots/stains as soon as it hits the wood. I had to come right behind the spray with a roller. I have a 250 sq/ft deck and it took me 3+ hours to apply and I still haven't gotten the spindles. At this point, I'm just hoping my deck isn't ruined and that it will dry without me tracking water sealer everywhere I go for the next year. Terrible product.

This product has always worked great. I have a 30 year old deck and not a single rotten board from water. Use the waterproofing every other year. Is a little thick to spray.

Great coverage. Applied with pump sprayer. Used towel tied to push broom to spread, faster than a brush. Used far less of this product than any other used in the last 20 years.
