can you spray on with a sprayer

Asked by: john
We had bad luck with the recommended sprayer, the stuff is just too thick. We used a very large brush, it glides right on.

5 gal. Clear Waterproofing Wood Protector is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pump-Sprayer Issue Resolved - Thicker formula DOES spray! This is a detailed review which contains information on the project, preparation, difficulties encountered and a resolution. To bypass the lengthy review please scroll to view the summery. After studying feedback and comparing prices, Thompson's Wood Sealer appeared to be the best bang for the buck. Negative reviews were read concerning Thompson's thicker formula and its inability to be sprayed via pump sprayer. However; it was decided to give the product a try based on the good-to-bad review ratio. The project: Sealing 250 lineal feet of a 6' high shadow box fence. 1500 square feet total. For preparation, Berh All-In-One Wood Cleaner #63 was used the weekend prior. The directions were followed on the back. It took (5) 1 gallon jugs of cleaner and 8 hours of pressure washing. This made the wood look new. The fence dried beyond the 48 hours recommended by Thompson's. Doing so ensured the fence did not contain moisture. The initial sealing test: To start, (1) five gallon bucket was purchased from The Home Depot. Additionally, a Flo•Master 885-021 2 gallon pump sprayer was obtained. The gentleman at the paint desk machine-shook the bucket since the pour outlet did not support traditional stir-sticks. The first usage took place around 6:00PM on Thursday September 22, 2016. The temperature was about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The product sprayed smoothly; no uneven build-up or runs. Excess material unnoticeably made its way to the bottom of the pickets and dripped off effortlessly. NOTE: Additional passes were needed for complete coverage because of the "fuzz" formed on the wood. The fuzz was created by pressure washing. The fence would have consumed less product and the application would have gone faster had an electric orbital sander been used on the pickets prior to sealing. A couple passes up and down with 120 grit sandpaper would have done the trick. It probably would have taken about 2 hours to sand the face of the pickets. After 35-40 minutes of filling, pumping and spraying, 5 gallons of sealer had been used. (6) 8' sections of fence were sealed and completed. That's 288 square foot of coverage. As mentioned above, more area would have been covered had the pickets been sanded. With coverage expectations in mind, (5) more 5 gallon buckets of sealer were purchased Saturday evening after work. These five cans were machine-shaken as well. The cans were stacked on the porch Saturday night to be used Sunday morning. Work began the next morning at 9:00am. The temperature was 62 degrees Fahrenheit, which was also the night-low. Filling the sprayer container, the sealer was thicker and poured more slowly than the bucket from the days earlier. When Spraying began, a huge problem was immediately encountered; uneven coverage, inconstancy, building-up and thickening. The product had to be evened out with a paint brush. Even after inconveniently brushing, the fence section still looked gooey. Thinking back on the negative reviews, the cans were searched for a production date; the batch number was located. The first can was 200xxx and the other cans were 130xxx-160xxx. A different Home Depot was contacted (store #4115) since all but 1 can were purchased from the first store. Unfortunately, all their stock was the lower batch number as well. The woman's name who gave assistance over the phone was Yvonne. She was extremely helpful, patient and determined to find a solution. It was agreed that contacting Thompson's on Monday was the best way to get accurate information on the batch numbers. Strapped for time and lack of work-days-off, another solution had to be found. "How can this stuff be thinned without ruining it"? The directions clearly state "do not thin". Then an epiphany!! The main ingredient is mineral oil. Oil gets thicker when cooled and thinner when heated. The directions mention the workable temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit and higher. That morning it was about 62 and rising. The cans were placed under the sun for about 2 hours. This brought the temperature above 70 degrees. The result was remarkable. The product once again flowed like water. The thick and gooey clear transformed into the beautiful workable product from days earlier. The fence was finished 3 hours following the increase in product temperature. There were 2 gallons leftover upon completion. The end result was beautiful, glowing natural-looking wood. This was very pleasing. So the issue is not with the mixture but with the operational temperature. The other folks who experienced a problem over the last few years most likely would have benefited from an increased temperature as well. The next day Thompson's was contacted and the findings were reported. The woman from Thompson's mentioned there was a formula alteration in 2013 which thickened the product. This was due to a change-in-requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency. She also mentioned there shouldn't be a significant difference in consistency between the different batch numbers. The negative reviews were brought to her attention as well. It was suggested to her the usage temperature be increased to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, the directions should state: if being applied with a pump sprayer, do not store container in an area where the temperature may decrease below 70 degrees. She mentioned she would immediately forward the information to the marketing department to address the concern. After speaking with Thompson's, Yvonne from The Home Depot was contacted. She was very happy to learn of the fix. Yvonne said she would educate her staff about the findings which would ultimately benefit the consumer. She represented her employer with utmost professionalism and sincerity; qualities not always found in today's corporate workforce. She is an asset to The Home Depot. Summery: *The product is excellent. It looks great and maintains a darker but natural wet look. *The price is wonderful compared to other marketed competitors. *The application is very easy when applied with a pump-sprayer. **If using a pump sprayer, be sure to store the can(s) in a room where the temperature remains above 70 degrees Fahrenheit or let the cans sit in the sun for 1-2 hours to increase the temperature. (Fall was 2 hours, the summer season may only need an hour). *If applying after pressure washing be sure to sand off the "fur" created by pressure washing. 120 grit sand paper with an electric orbital sander should work great. Otherwise, more product will be required to cover the desired area. Finally, enjoy! This product has just enhanced all your hard work.

The product performed just as advertised. Water bounces off my red wood fence. The clear coat enables the texture and natural wood color to "pop out" . I would add a clarification to your products' description. Make sure the consumer knows the difference between clear and transparent. Hey, thanks for manufacturing an American made product that lives up to its specifications.

Never used this product before as most of the jobs I did customers wanted a colored stain from another manufacturer. But this customer after doing her own research wanted this product. After pressure washing and letting the fence dry the 48 hours recommended. I applied the product with an airless power sprayer. It is much easier and quicker with this method. You get really good penetration of the product into the wood even with all of the fuzz from pressure washing. The job took every drop of the estimated 7 Gallons I projected and used. My customer is VERY happy with the results. I have used other Thomson's Water Seal products for other jobs and now I will add this one to my list.

Took 5 buckets and several months to seal a brand new privacy fence, inside and out. Product went on easily and seems to be doing a great job preserving the natural appearance of the wood. Unfortunately a few boards will have to be replaced already due to warping but that's due to weather, time and it's wood...it happens. I would like to review again in about 2 years...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WAY TO THICK TO SPRAY Purchased this along with a Thompson's sprayer that matches the image on the back of the can to seal my fence. Stored, shook, and mixed as much as possible and it was still so thick it would not spray. Had to use thinner and I'm sure that compromised the quality of the seal. Do not recommend at all.

This Thompson's WaterSeal is ok - not really worth the cost but the best we can get at this time. It is better than the lesser product of Thompson's that we had bought because we felt that price was more in keeping with our budget so we upped the payout for more protection.

This can is awkward for loading into a sprayer, and I'm sure, any other container or dispenser. I wish Thompson's would re-think their pour spout. The sealer itself looks great on my fence and I hope it preserves the wood for years to come.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to do the job as advertised Decided to replace wood pickets of fence, then decided to add some protection. Positive feedback came from wife when she said "I accidently watered the fence, and you know, the water bounced off". Seems the product is working as advertised!
