It was noted in a previous question it was not advisable to paint over the water sealant. Would it be feasible to put the water sealant OVER painted surface as sort of a top coat?

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Can't beat the price We wanted to buy the expensive stuff, but none of them got good reviews. We were also worried about how the tinted vs. clear would actually color the wood. So we decided to try the clear since the fence was brand new cedar. We used a $10 hand pump which worked wonderful. The Thompson's also went further than we expected, so we have a few 1-gallon cans left over. The 5-gallon gives a nice break in price, but is a little more difficult to pour and can be messy. The 1-gallons were a breeze. Make sure to cover any plants as they will turn yellow or black where there is overspray. Finally, we were very happy with the color. When the fence is in direct sun - you can't tell a difference. When its in indirect sun, the wood looks a bit darker - almost like it's wet, keeping that beautiful cedar color. I took a picture of a spot where I couldn't spray due to a large plant in the way. This was taken approx. two months after I applied the sealer. November 1, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Product very thick and difficult to apply with sprayer The product (in 2015) is very thick and difficult to apply with a pump up sprayer. It would not come out as a spray (mist) to evenly cover the wood. Instead it would only come out as a stream. If I adjusted the sprayer nozzle for a spray, it would not come out at all due to the thickness of the product. The previous formulation was much thinner and was easier to spray. It does look good and darkens the wood. But it goes on heavy and thick and therefore has trouble sinking in, leaving greasy looking, slippery spots on the wood. May 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by not good used this product the same way for 12 years and this year got little shiny spots all over my deck.porch and wood walk what a mess. thompson said must have put too much toocheap to do that customer service the worst I've encountered .... Pat Conti August 8, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best purchase made glad I didn't go with the more expensive brands This product went on very easy. I used a sprayer to make sure that I covered my whole deck. I applied and it rained on it about 10 hours later and it was already dry enough to withstand the rain and stay on my deck. This product is the best. June 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to work with Good product, better than it use to be!! Would purchase this again. July 8, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Product being phased out This high-VOC, solvent-based formulation of Thompson's WaterSeal Waterproofer PLUS Clear Wood Protector is being replaced by a low-VOC formulation that may not be as easy to apply. If you want to use the high-VOC version of the product in the future, you may want to stock up now. The low-VOC formulation of Waterproofer PLUS Clear Wood Protector is currently being sold in cans that are virtually identical to the cans used for the high-VOC formulation, so you have to look for the VOC information on the side of the can to know which product you're buying. The high-VOC formulation will say "Maximum VOC: 600 g/L - 5 lb/gal," and the low-VOC formulation will say "Maximum VOC: 100 g/L (0.80 lb./gal)." Although high-VOC Waterproofer PLUS says it is for wood substrates only, I successfully applied it to a clean, new cinder block and got perfect beading in rain after it had dried for 48 hours. High-VOC Waterproofer PLUS did permanently darken the cinder block to a medium gray from a very light gray. October 26, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product Applied 15 gallons to a large dock on a lake. Application with a garden sprayer was very easy, and I'm sure worlds easier than painting would have been. Very pleased with the results after several weeks. Time will tell, but if if lasts at least 3 years I'll be more than happy apply the product again. June 18, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by First time using green labeled product, always used red label. Used pump up hand sprayer to apply on powerwashed deck wood about 20 years old. Job went smooth with cheapy $10 sprayer. Cleanup easy. Wood had been treated every 3 or 4 years with red label Thompsons. Wood developed nice somewhat darker shade after application. Will have to wait a couple of years for results and compare. September 11, 2012
