I used a paint sprayer to apply the stain to my fence. 1st time using the sprayer, 1st time using the stain product. Yes it's pink inside the bucket but when you apply to fence it gives a nice ceder tone. Read directions and do NOT stir the product also just one light coat is sufficient like it says. Before and after pic.

This product is terrible, I always thought that Thompson's was top tier, but this new product they put out now leaves a blotchy, uneven almost plastic type coating. When it dried it looked like the deck was stained years ago,not the day before. Highly unrecommended. Should have listened to all the bad reviews.

I purchased and applied this product to my outdoor deck in September of 2014. I followed the instructions by first cleaning my deck, allowing to dry then apply the product. It applied easily and looked great after application. It even performed very well initially and through the winter 2014/2015. Then in March 2015 it began to flake off. Now in June, it is probably 20% flaked off. To add insult to injury, I had three separate contactors advise that I will have to have the deck sanded to remove (i.e. power spraying won't do it). The cost for the sanding is estimated at close to $1000 for my 850 sq foot deck.

This is not the Thompson's wood stain they made a few years ago... and Thompson's did not bother to change the product name or the packaging. This is a new water-based formula that is NOT a penetrating stain to enhance wood, but a plastic-like coating instead. It might last longer and it might appeal to the novice who needs soap and water clean-up, I am very disappointed Thompson's changed their product and then deceptively presented as the same. They could at least change the colors on the can and call it a "new water based formula". I would never buy this product again. It looks cheap and coats the wood with a plastic-like coating. If you want this look, just save money and buy a plastic maintainence-free fence or deck! Awful experience!!

I applied 2 coats per instructions to my deck in Denver, CO in May. Because the smooth surface roller seemed to be leaving too much product (it says clearly not to leave too much on) I did my best to soak up extra. Within two months, the deck was unprotected again--no beading water and soaking in. Installing a wood deck in Colorado I expected to have to treat it once/year. But after a little more than 2 months?
I purchased a 5 gallon bucket and it was way too much. Not wanting to spend more money, I decided to just finish up the bucket. Bad decision.
So, I applied the same stuff again. Per the instructions of my favorite guy at Home Depot, I carefully prepared the deck (again). This time I did not mop up what seemed to be extra product. Now, after more than 48 hours of dry time I have a sticky mess. I will NOT be doing a second coat. Hopefully, this will wear off quickly and I can use something different, but my guess is that this spring I will be sanding the whole thing down.
On a side note, I used Behr waterproofing stain for the trim and that was easy to apply and seems to have held up well.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Maggie Do NOT buy this. It is PINK!
I had been applying the CLEAR version of Thompson's to a very large fence area. Home Depot had run out of the CLEAR, so I thought I would try the TRANSPARENT. The product poured out in a clumpy waxy PINK mess. I did a test area. Needless to say I had to replace those boards. There is nothing transparent about this product! I will only use the CLEAR Thompson's! Unless you want a hot pink mess for a fence! This should be removed from shelves.
