Should I use Redi Poxy or mortar for tiling vertical sides of pan on the first bottom row of wall?

My tiles with size 1' square will cover on the bottom of wall half of pan's side and half of cement board. Should I use Redi Poxy or mortar for tiling the first row from a bottom vertical sides of pan?

Can I use 12 inch tile on my shower base. The unit I have is 36 x 60.

Asked by: Joey
If you want to use large tile, I recommend the trench drain models so you can provide a uniform slope to the drain. The center drain will require the tile to be cut at an angle to provide slope to the drain.

Possible install idea

I'm concerned about getting the mortar base correct as it seems that is an issue for some folks. Is it feasible to just flip the thing over, fill all those ribbed areas with mortar, let it dry, put a piece of plywood over it temporarily and flip it into place? That would seem to insure perfect coverage and eliminate any potential for gaps, weak / bouncey spots? Just a thought.
Asked by: Consulting101
No, because the purpose of the mortar is to also accommodate at inconsistency between the bottom of the shower base and the floor. If there were any high/low spots on the floor the shower base and mortar would flex, cracking the mortar and possibly resulting in small pieces of the mortar getting on the floor, making the problem even worse.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buyer Beware I installed the pan per the manufacturer instructions, using a mortar bed, and the pan is flexing under foot in 2 areas. I was extremely careful placing the mortar bed and moving it back and forth to set the fins. From reading (after the fact), this is a common problem, and will cause the grout to crack. I'm left with the option of pulling the pan up and starting over. 3 extra days of labor for this piece of junk. The telephone support was worthless, as apparently they are very concerned about litigation because they could not recommend any fix or alternative to the standard installation. On a blog, I read about using a latex fortified mortar, but the mfr. will not tell me if this will work or not? What a dissapointment, especially considering the steep price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from quite easy for a qualified contractor Pan must be set in about two inches of mortar,Let this set for about 12-16 hours.Laying the tile on the pan must be layed with the epoxy in the white cardboard milk looking box and the clear bag mix the two. Use on your curb and floor.I do the floor and curb last so you do not drop mortar and tile on it

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Garbage DO NOT BUY one of these cheap shower pans. I ordered this model and thought it would arrive just as the spec sheet says. No, the 34" side is 33 5/8". This is a problem because I had already built my control wall so that my backerboard would be flush with the shower pan and I could tile straight across. Now I have a 3/8" gap. Second, the side walls are suppose to be 1/2" so that the backerboard in the shower stal mounts flush. Of course, the 48" side is 5/8", not 1/2". So what am I suppose to do to make it flush?? Shave off an 1/8" of the shower pan? The on a dry fit, I notice the 48" back wall is 1" off the stud. So I pull the pan out and put a straight edge up to the back, it's bowed in 3/4". Are you kidding me? For the kind of money paid for this, I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED and it will be going back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When installed correctly this product can not be beaten! I have installed many units and have had great success with them on custom bathrooms. A very simple and easy to install product, but you must read and understand the instructions prior to your installation. If you are unsure view the videos at the company's website. I was amused to see this product being showcased by a "pro contractor" on HGTV that clearly did not follow the the instructions

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Installation instructions need revision Being the first time, and probably the last, that I've installed a shower base I relied entirely on the instructions provided with the base. The instructions emphasize spreading the underlaying adhesive to ensure coverage of all base ribs. The adhesize is prepackaged and included with the base and I assumed that would be sufficient for the base I bought. Wrong! After preparing the adhesive and spreading it to cover the major ribs, I had only a thin layer left for the center portion of the base. That didn't work. The center needed more adhesive and I was left with an annoyingly squeeky base. More adhesive should be supplied with the base. For the customers sake, It's better to have too much adhesive than not enough. I would only recommend it to someone who is willing to make the added expense of buying more adhesive.
