Customer Questions & Answers

Will the battery and charger for a 51486 edger work with this.model

I have a 51486 cordless edger which just had the spool spinner separate and come off. I looked on Toro's website and cannot find a replacement part and every other site I check says they are obsolete. I have a very nice edger that will not work as the spool spinner plate that holds in the spool is broken. So I either end up finding one, or I buy a Toro that is compatible with my charger and battery or find an completely different edger.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Actually Made By Toro This unit worked well for one season. After that it quit on me. I took to to the local Toro dealer. The guy at Toro informed me that the trimmer is actually made by someone else and Toro kindly puts their name on it. He couldn't look at it because he wouldn't be able to get parts for it. Took it to an electric motor shop who informed me the battery is the problem. A new battery is expensive to replace. I have been advised to purchase a Stihl gas powered trimmer. My advice is to not put any weight behind the reviews who have not had the unit for less than a year or two.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from rivals gas trimmers My gas trimmer broke down and I had to replace it. Decided on trying out a battery powered unit. Knew I needed Lithium since they perform better than NiCd battery units. Decided on this Toro and it didn't disappoint. I was able to trim front and back yard, all the weeds between the patio blocks, and a bunch of overgrowth of weeds and grass on my gravel driveway on a single charge. The power did not fade at all and the capability of this trimmer is excellent. Do not underestimate the battery powered trimmers. They rival the power of some single line gas trimmers. The auto-feed line was very convenient... no bumping to advance the line, no fumes, very quiet. it broke through thistles almost 3/4" thick like butter. Very happy with it on it's first outing. We'll see how it goes over time, but so far so good!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Really, Toro?!! Well, as I always do, I read the instructions carefully. Put it all together and went outside to do some simple trimming. Things were great... for three (yes, 3) minutes... ... and then it quit. Just quit. Died. Dead. Non functioning. Hmmm... well, I have another fully charged battery. Nope. Kaput! Finished! Lights out! I also bought the hedge trimmer but haven't tried it out. Won't, either. It will also be returned. If the Toro trimmer only lasted 3 minutes, what hope do I have that either product will last more than a year. Sorry, Toro... I gave it a shot and you let me down. (this is in no way a reflection on the wonderful service that I have received from Home Depot)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Expected better from Toro The trimmer works fine and as expected. The edger is almost worthless-it is difficult to clearly see where you are cutting; the wire advances erractically and often must be advanced by hand; the wobble also mentioned by others is annoying. Even tho this is a moderately priced item I expected better from Toro. Home Depot provides great service and response to customers-my concern here is not with them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the cordless extended battery; hate the head-wobble in Edger mode. Toro Model 51487 Edger/Trimmer, Cordless: In Trimmer mode, the Toro 51487 cutting head is firmly attached to the pole and does not wobble. You can easily cut a straight, level surface. However, in the Edging mode (head rotated 90-degrees), the Toro 51487 head wobbles on the pole making it impossible to cut a crisp, straight edge. Instead you get a ragged, uneven edge. If anyone has found any way to tighten the head and prevent the wobble in Edger mode, there are many people who would greatly appreciate learning how to fix or mod the Toro 51487 Edger/Trimmer. The previous model, Toro Model 51486, did not have the wobble problem. It may have been a higher quality construction.
