Hi Grace,
Thanks for asking.
Yes, this Toro Trimmer has a pivoting head design that allows you to vertically edge with it as well as trim horizontally with the string head.
There is a guide wheel that rolls along the edge to make it easy for you.

The spool can be rewound. I use a little heavier line than they recommend, and so far have not experienced overheating with the tool. Just use common sense when operating; it's a trimmer, not a chainsaw.

What works best for my chain link fencing since my neighbors do not trim around their surrounding areas is to use the edging feature down the fenceline, then trim. The invasive plants that one dingbat neighbor has growing through my fence are neatly cut out of the links when I trim this way.

Any trimmer acts the same when it hits solid objects. I have a chain link fence to cut against, and you need to be careful to keep the line from hitting it as much as possible. It will cut the line and you will need to keep extending it. Extend the line by pushing the button on the trim head and pulling the line. Very easy.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 351 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Toro Electric trimmer-- just fine for smaller yards I bought this trimmer to replace a similarly-priced model from another brand. I had replaced multiple parts on my old trimmer and decided it was time for something new. I have only used it once, but it trims well and seems plenty powerful for my needs. I especially like the design for pivoting the head and the wheel for edging-- these are both better designs than the previous model. It does seem to go through string at a pretty good pace. Users might want to read up on the auto-feed spool, although it is similar to others I have used before. I have not owned it long enough to speak to durability, but my experience with Toro tells me that it should last just fine. June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Everything and More this weed eater came right on time as expected. was easy to put together. is lightweight and has so much power. awesome buy. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Like it but heavy and also not designed for its heft (it's broken) I am done with Black & Decker electric trimmers so ordered this Toro online (why doesn't Home Depot sell these in their stores if everyone hates the B&D ones?). It is heavy (good sized motor that I hope will last a long time). But I'll deal with it because the rest of it is made pretty well except that after just two weeks of moderate use, the main aluminum shaft separated from the handle portion just below the handle. I don't think it was designed properly for its heftiness. That connection should not be a pressure/friction fitting. There needs to be a screw there (which I will try to add). For now, I'm holding it together (barely) by gripping the lower half of the shaft instead of by the handle. The best part is the manual trimmer line feed. Yes, I have to stop every couple of minutes to feed it some more line but that sure beats taking apart the stupid Black & Decker ones, feeding more line, putting it back together, and repeating every couple of minutes. May 31, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by not what i envisioned my biggest concern is that you have to hold down one button and at the same time press a bar. i know its for safety,b but releasing the bar stops the weedeater. the other concern is the edger isn't what i would say is easy to use. September 6, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Line hangs up at times I ordered this because it had high reviews. However, I'm disappointed in the line feed. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product easy to assemble, great product and easy to use. i would buy it again! August 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good BUT...... I needed to replace my old trimmer. I was tired of recharging the underperforming batteries with Black & Decker so opted for electric. Excellent motor I thought for the price. Powerful and really zipped through anything I fed it. What really annoyed me and the reason I returned it was it is advertised as "auto feed" but it is not. You have to manually feeed it. I had to do it literally every three minutes as the string gets chewed to pieces. Stronger string for such a powerful motor would solve this problem. Would I buy this brand again yes. It boils downt ot what is important to you. July 20, 2016
