Customer Questions & Answers

Are there any attachments actually available for this unit or is that just a way to get people to buy it?

I have looked on the Toro website and found nothing. I see nothing at Home Depot's website either. Same is true for Amazon. You would think that if there were attachments that they could be found on the Toro site - Nada!
Asked by: ElViejo
Home Depot sells Ryobi attachments for the Toro gas trimmer. Pole saw, edger etc. They work great.

How do I load the string?

Asked by: Anonymous
The instructions show how. But all you have to do is line up the lines on the small nob with the spool. Once you've done this you will feed the line through it till it comes out on the other side. NOTE: that you do not have to remove the cap. Once the line has passed through, pull it to be even and the just wind the cap and see the line be retracted to the inside. Pretty nice.

Does the trimmer head spin counter clockwise or clockwise (while in cutting position-looking down at the trimmer)?

I ask becuse I just bought another brand and took it back because while cutting and trimming looking down at the timmer while its spinning the head rotates counter clockwise and throws all the debris back on my legs and feet. So I took it back. So wanted to know if this model does before I buy one.
Asked by: Anonymous
The straight shaft trimmer spins counter clockwise looking down to the trimmer. The curved shaft trimmer spins clockwise. The instructions indicate which way you need to use the tool. The curved shaft trimmer uses a right to left cutting motion with the unit on your right side. The straight shaft trimmer uses a left to right motion with the unit on the right side of your body. If you don't do that, the debris will hit you near your lower legs.

The entire head came off while I was trimming. What makes the head stay on. I can't determine what part is missing.

Asked by: PTIP
the head kept coming off of mine and it was just a bolt that was loose, I just tightened it "snug" when I put it back on the 5th time, so far it worked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toro 51978 Prior weed wacker I owned was an MTD 31cc 2-stroke and this commercial grade weed wacker engine even with a smaller 25.4cc beat's up my old MTD Weed wacker, not just a little.. alot! Couple pulls to prime / choke and 1st pull on half choke start's right up. Let it run an additional 5 to 10 seconds before setting the throttle to Full and this weed wacker really roars. The amount of power this little engine put's out is amazing & the starting is A+++ plus 18in cutting path is best in class, what more could you ask for? This weed wacker in my opinion is equal to an echo of the same spec's for at least $100 less and $80 less for the upgraded full-blown Toro commercial weed wacker. 4-year residential warranty, quality of materials are excellent for this price point. I figured this weed wacker would be a whimp compared to my old MTD 31cc 2-stroke weed wacker and this Toro is alot stronger. I also re-strung the line & the "Tap" on ground feature worked perfectly even with line that is a little bit thicker than suggested by Toro. I'm a now a former MTD buyer as Toro will be my 1st choice of lawn care product's. Love this Toro 51978!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from terrible at starting I purchased this unit because it was listed as a product that could handle my size yard, had the attachment feature and a respected name ( Toro ). The product was fair when it would start but it would only start on about a tenth of the times I waned to use it. Most days I just gave up and walked away. Finally yesterday I took the thing back to Home Depot and am now researching trimmers again. When it did run it did a decent job but the vibration was overwhelming and limited the minutes I could use it. I am in decent shape for my age but after attempting to start the thing I have to beleive there has to be sometihng better than this. Stay away from Toro trimmers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little trimmer Out of the box started on second pull unlike my previous model. It idles good and accelerates fast. I use itwith brush cutter pprimarily and it is really impressive. What I really like about it is that it is reliable, I use only premixed fuel so that may account for the easy starts. The reason for 4 stars is that it is a little heavy, not terrible like my last trimmer but not as light as some of the more expensive models. The other negative is the head rotation, it turns counterclockwise as all expandit power heads do and you get pretty dirty using it but I knew this going in. Bottom line a good purchase, I hope this helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I thought I owned a trimmer until I bought this unit. I am well pleased with my purchase of this trimmer. It worked great out of the box no issues. It has more than enough power and is fairly quiet compared to other trimmers I have owned in the past.. I cut some overgrowth weeds at about half throttle with no problem. It has minimum vibration and weight is not an issue for me. some reviews stated line would break easily but did not happen with me , maybe line was not spooled correctly or wrong size line used. This is stated on the box as a commercial grade trimmer .What difference I paid for this trimmer verses a cheaper one was definitely worth it to me. I recommend this product to anyone thinking about buying one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It's kind of built well but Does what it should but it is way to heavy and who ever signed off on the plastic debris guard must have been asleep at the wheel because this thing will sling everything you cut back at you unless you keep it angled to throw everything forward. To call the debri guard junk would be a compliment.I riveted a piece of sheet metal onto mine .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best commercial trimmer bought yet!! I have own a Lawn Service for 6 years now and have gone through some many trimmers it's not funny!! I normally buy echo or sthil, they always give me good results. But i decided that i would try toro trimmers since the push mowers that I own are toro and they have lasted me all 6 years so far and are in still great working condition. So i bought 6 toro trimmers and all of them worked right out of the box, and they have work for one whole season now without any problems at all!!! You probably know that lawn services really work their equipment hard and for me to not have one problem so far is amazing!! I WOULD HANDS DOWN RECOMMEND THIS TRIMMER!!
