Customer Questions & Answers

Does this model need a periodic oil change? Do you have to run the engine till all the gas is used up after each cut? Can it go backwards?

Asked by: maria
I would change the oil at least yearly at the minimum even though it says no oil change needed but just to top it off. I don't care what they recommend a cleaner running engine will last longer than a dirty one. These engines are usually made to fail around 100 to 125 hours of use however. It is built into the plastic parts of the engine such as the camshaft and gears. Yes they are plastic so I would definitely change the engine oil yearly no matter what is recommended. We ......well at least I do......as consumers want longevity out of our mowers but they are a profit making businesses and want you to buy a new mower every 5 years. These are considered throw away mowers and usually when they are ready for major repairs they are not worth fixing when the bill hits 150 to 200 dollars or sometimes even more than a new mower. Think about it. Plastic internal engine parts. GM has used plastic timing gears since the 80s yet they were considered reliable. When I rebuilt my engines I always replaced the plastic that sometimes showed broken teeth and wear I replaced the plastic gears with Cloyes true roller and sometimes double roller timing chain and gears. Why......? Because they were a heck of a lot better in performance and more reliable. Not as quiet as plastic but definitely more reliable in my opinion as a mechanic. Plastic generates less heat and noise which is why they use them in the car and the lawn mower. It is a phenolic resin type plastic usually made to last around 5 years or 100 to 125 hours of use in the lawn mower. The reason they say just add the oil and not to change it is because they say less heat is generated by the engine because of the plastic overhead cam and gears, therefore the oil doesn't break down from the heat.......well.......I am sure that is true but you still have blow by from the piston rings I would think but I think they claim to have closer machined tolerances between the piston and the cylinder wall too, but for me I am changing the oil I have my own recommendations for longevity and the number one major recommendation is clean oil and a Pennzoil sae 30 weight in the summer months. But most people throw stuff away anyway after a few years and they are off to buy new........a small engine mechanic a retired veteran who has a lawn mower repair business in my county Has people who bring him mowers free that many times are usually only 2 to 3 years old but quit running. The people who drop them off don't even want them repaired because they want to go out and buy new. He usually changes the destroyed carburetor due to the ethanol in fuel and has it running like new or checks the internals like the plastic cam and gears etc. and has them running like new. So do I blame Briggs and Stratton for building a 5 year throw away mower.......? Not in any way. They know that most people don't want to change oil and they don't want a mower more than 5 years old so why make one that will last any longer anyway......? On their end it's .....smart .......very smart, but for the customer who wants longevity......MAN....... THAT SUCKS

How is traction with the front wheel drive versus the rear wheel drive recyclers?

It would seem with a bag it would start to lose traction with all the weight to the rear.
Asked by: Mainecoon
If you have a long, straight, level yard the rear-wheel drive gives you a little more power for thicker grass. However, if you have several lawn ornaments, trees, and other obstacles in a smaller yard, the front wheel drive makes it SO much easier. Honestly, I like my front wheel drive model more. While you will burn through belts a little faster, they're much easier than trying to replace one on the rear wheel. And like I said, much better maneuverability.

Can you store it folded up with gas and oil in it ?

Asked by: bryzzer
Yes. I fill it with gas immediately before use, mow the yard (which burns some of the gas), allow it to cool (while I trim and edge), then I put the mower in the SmartStow position and stow. Works perfect. I can have two cars in the garage and move the mower in and out without having to move either car.

Bought this mower to replace a craftsman that was wore out and not worth putting money into. I chose this mower for the ability to store upright. After first use I could defiantly till the difference this Toro feels flimsy. Pros the ability to store upright. Nice powerful Briggs and Stratton engine. Cons Feels light and flimsy, The throttle and drive cables rub against the rear wheel ( Toro should correct this), The bagger doesn't seat very well against the mower deck so it spits clippings out as you mow, emptying the bag is messy the door needs to be designed better. I only recommend this mower for its space saving storage.

I have larger mowers (60 inch zero turn and traditional riding mower) but also purchased one of these mowers in 2015 for a small rental property. I was happy enough with it to purchase a second as a gift this year. Now two of us are happy about this model. Easy starting. Changing oil is a little different than in the past but not messy or difficult. I don't bag but the bagging is simple and easy. It is a single speed so one has to adjust to the mower speed rather than adjusting the mower to one's walking speed but it is not a difficult adjustment. Plenty of power. Easy clean-up. Deck height adjustment is easy and simple. Convenient storage (and it does not leak gas or oil when stored upright.

With my older Toro, I could easily access the bowl and clean out the ports with a fine wire or needle. But that problem arose after over 3 years of heavy use. Older model had the primer button too and the blades wouldn't get stuck with heavy clumps of grass. On this model grass clumps prevent the blades from turning. Same yard, same cutting cycles, different mower. Toro should do some better quality control on their products. Really disappointed.

I haven't really given it a true test--I put it together(10 minutes), filled up the oil, adjusted the cutting height and read the manual--Put some gas in , one pull and away we went--I had to run to keep up with it--Had to crank back on the speed--Ran it around the yard and I knew I had made a good choice--Not much grass to cut right now, pretty dry spring--I'll update when I give it the full treatment--But the storage ??--Fantastic !!--

The first one immediately leaked oil in the Smart Stow position. I took it back to Home Depot and got another one (stupid I know). I got another one and the same thing happened during the first week. That one's going back right now! What a disappointment! The Smart Stow feature would have been great but it's worthless if it leaks when it's upright.

Purchased this one and well it was a disappointment. Issues: Grass would shoot out of the top of the grass catcher , TORO had to know this was a issue from day one when they designed it, shame on them for not correcting it, also it was powerless and would puff black smoke. I returned the mower due to the grass catcher issue and just overall lack of quality and power. I spent the additional $80 and purchased the Honda, what a wise choice that was, LOVE the Honda. Spend the money. Customer service no need to comment, you know the issues with this machine since 2014 and yet no fix in site. Shame on you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from NO START After unpacking and final assembly, the mower Absolutely would not start. I risked voiding the warranty and accessed the carburetor fuel bulb and float, and it was full of cloudy water. I drained, cleaned, and reassembled, and mower started on the first pull. It works and the duel front wheel drive is great. I love Toro and finally happy, after the bad start.

The only down side is, because it is very sturdy, it is also very heavy. Also, the self-propel feature is on the fast side. It may be adjustable, if I can figure it out! All in all it's a good mower. Definitely good quality.
