Will this suck up wet leaves or will that hurt the machine?

Im considering buying this and if it will hurt it I'll need to look at a different product
Asked by: Blak7712
I've had two of these units, they work well. The problem with wet leave is the impeller chamber will become clogged quite quickly. Imagine wet leaves mulched to a paste-like substance between the impeller and the chamber wall. This will have to be scraped out with a screwdriver or pointed object. Mulching with this unit is for dry leaves only unless you can put up with scraping it out often.

I NEED A SHREDDER THAT WORKS GREAT, AND NOT REALLY THE BLOWER. DO YOU RECOMMEND THIS UNIT, #51618, PRIMARY FOR THE BLOWER OR THE SHREDDER FUNCTIONS?

Asked by: kmmk
GREAT blower, but I DO NOT recommend any blower as a vacuum shredder. Everything picked up goes directly through and impacts the impeller, so you need a full blown shredder, in which the impeller is engineered and manufactured to run and shred garbage through it. NO blower is really designed to do that, no matter what the marketing guys say. It won't last long at all.

It is very easy to change out the accessories, and the bag is large enough to hold more leaves than I can comfortably carry. It's easy to empty, as well. Do keep in mind that you will need to purchase a really heavy duty extension cord to handle the wattage of this machine. I found that the cord ends up weighing more than the leaf blower itself. I recommend also wearing a mask and eye protection for use of the vacuum. A LOT of dust and pollen blows right through the bag as it fills. It works perfectly, lifting leaves off of gravel without picking up the gravel. All in all, this performed better than expected for the price. I'm happy with the purchase.

The problem is the poor design quality of the fabric leaf bag that comes with the machine. The leaf bag tears where the bag meets the plastic chute that attaches to the machine. I have replaced several of these bags. The bags are of poor design and quality.

The bag is LOUSY. Toro has cheapened it so much it is beyond practical use. See images of the zipper on this one. Last one did as the other pictures have shown and came apart at the collector input/sleeve. YES Homdepot will exchange it. Should not have to. This is unsatisfactory TORO. Get it together.

Both were great units, but when they died, I was tired of messing with them and trying to keep the gas powered units running. Since I only used the blower around the house on the farm, where I have plenty of outlets and extension cords, I did some research, and the Toro was the highest rated electric and had the best specs. In fact, the air flow specs are almost identical to both my commercial backpack blowers, and in practice, the electric Toro works every bit as well as the gas units did, but is much lighter and easier to use, and starts every time you turn it on. Sure, the cord is a little inconvenient, but I've found that it's still much more convenient than the gas units, and the cord wasn't as much of a pain as I thought it was going to be. I also went with the 2-speed model, since there's less to go wrong, and it's more easily fixed if it does. The 1st position on the slide switch is the low speed, and is great around crowded areas and doorways, where you get backflows and eddy flows. It just runs the motor through a diode at half voltage, so not much to go wrong. This whole unit costs less than the parts to repair my commercial backpack blowers, so they are just sitting in the barn, and with this unit handling the job, they'll probably stay there. This tool is much cheaper to run... now I don't have to buy gas, mix the gas, buy and mix in StaBil to try to keep the gas from going bad as quickly. I've been using this blower for a couple of years now, and at the price, I don't expect it to last 20 years, but it's convenient and works great, and when it dies, I'll get another one. My commercial backpack blowers cost 10x as much, and they didn't last too many years either. By the way, I HAVE NOT used the vacuum attachment, so have no idea how it works. I don't like the idea of running garbage through the impeller, and I assume that the fine dust produced would also eventually find its way into the motor and brushes, so everything that I've said is in regard only to use as a blower, and personally, I wouldn't use any of these units as a vacuum.

I only recommend this blower due to its low price for the CFM volume the customer gets. This is because most folks find out they have to replace this blower way too often due to the cheap switch they use which shorts out rendering the product useless. Guess thats the way most companies engineer there products for the past 15 years to ensure the customer continues to replace the junk they produce. So even using an expensive 12 gauge 100 ft. extension cord does NOT prevent this ON-OFF switch from failing. Home Depot asked for my product opinion and they got a honest truthful reply since i have purchased this same Toro blower over the years and even though the switch has been redesigned it is still a cheap device purposely designed to fail in my opinion.

Well, after owning a prior TORO blower which worked very well for many years I decided to purchase a new one after the motor finally went out on the old blower going on 10 years. The new blower is powerful but as many companies typically do they change the design and end up making a worse product then the original. See that short power cord. You cannot tie off a knot because it is too short. My extension cord is heavy duty so it does not fit into their locking system. So, to operate the blower you must hold the cord. The older model had a knob you turned for slow and high speed. This has a push forward switch which is difficult to operate. It always wants to slide to high. Didn't anyone at TORO test this equipment before it hit the shelves? If something works why change it?
