Answer:
Yes. Actually, the engine should not have if you were not sitting in the seat. There is a built in safety lock to keep this from happening.

Answer:
This is correct, the seat activates the meter. I think the meter should work when the engine is running, but makes sense that it only works when you are in the seat.

last but not least ask a Toro repair shop. Remember if they tell you yes and it doesn't fit, connect or work you can always take it back.

I installed one on mine. The connector was taped to the wiring harness. I untapped the connector plugged it into the hourmeter and then snapped the hourmenter in the cutout in the frame near the engine. It was just that simple.

Does the meter have an internal battery? Can you unplug it from the tractor battery, and have it keep the meter reading?

Answer:
I do not see a place to install a batter in the meter.. I disconnected the meter from the cable for 5 minutes and the hours continued to show. I will assume there is a capacitor holding a charge to keep the hours reading and maintained if you take the battery out or the batter is low.
I record the hours so if the hour meter does drop the hours I will still have a record of the last time it did record.

Answer: Yes, when you disconnect the Hour meter Yes it still holds the time. (how long I am not sure) I would check with the hour meter company.

It has a small battery that keeps a memory. If you disconnect the battery it doesn’t reset your hourmeter to 0.

Hourmeter Kit for TimeCutter SS is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toro Hour Meter Toro Hour Meter For the Toro installed in less then two minutes. I lifted the seat, separated the hour meter cable, connected the unite, then I snapped the Hour Meter into the upper frame. The meter records the time you have the motor on and you are sitting in the seat. This way it get the actual running time. I have checked the meter after every use. I have set up a sheet to cross off when maintenance is required. The hour meter is a must. To keep the Zero working at its peek, the hour meter is a unit I wish came with the Toro. I have put 9 hours on the meter before writing the review to repeat. I am very happy I bought and installed the Hour meter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Engine Hour Meter I purchased a Toro riding mower and the mower didn't include an engine hour meter, which is a bit ridiculous. Since an engine hour meter is important to keep track of maintenance, I purchased the hour meter from Home Depot on line. The hour meter was delivered within a few days and it was very easy to install and it works fine. It remains to be seen how long it will last as it seems to be cheaply made and over priced for the quality. But, that is not the fault of Home Depot. I shopped around for a better price, but Home Depot was within a few dollars of any other seller, so knowing that Home Depot is reliable, I purchased the hour meter from them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Should Be Standard Equipment Entire maintenance portion of owner's manual is based upon hours of use, but you must buy and install this meter as an accessory. Given the purported quality level of the Toro S5000 mower, an hour meter should be standard!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toro timer Well let me start off by saying that a 2500 mower or better should come with this already installed. It is very easy to install this meter where the wiring harness is there is a small white or black zip tie holding a connection to the wiring. You cut the zip tie and one connection comes loose which is for the hourmeter. You run the connector through the slot which is located on the right side frame behind the seat and connected to the meter. Once you connected to the meter 0.0 will show and you snapped into place. Done

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, easy to install, everyone should have one of these Easy to install the wiring is already installed on the wiring harness just un tape the plug in , run it up through the pre cut hole in the frame under the seat, plug it in and snap the hour meter in place. It only reads when you are actually setting in the seat so don't be surprised when it does not move all the time. I could not find the installation instructions on the Toro or Home depot site so I am posting them here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only time will tell! To start, the hour meter arrived right on time. It took no time to install. Every time I look at it, it seems be working. Only time will tell if it will keep working. Let's face it, every time anyone writes a review, one never knows at that time, whether he/she will be satisfied will the product all the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toro Hour Meter Fairly simple to install. Works great and keeps me informed about usage. Mower maintenance intervals are set by running time. For instance "change oil after 100 operating hours". The only way to do that properly is to have an hour meter. Glad I got it.
