1. Engine-159cc toro motor- D+: reason- this is a very temperature sensitive engine and even in warm weather chugs for the first couple minutes and won't start in 3 pulls under 55 degrees- changed the oil, new spark plug, new air filter and still the same issue.
2. Mulching-F:reason- Worst. Mulcher. Ever. If you are cutting more than a .25 in of grass it just creates lines of grass and piles wherever you stop or turn around. I use the side discharge now so at least it's spread out a bit. Had a Yard King before this and it mulched like a champ in the same yard, got rid of it because it's heavy and hard to push on our hills.
3. Drive system-A minus: reason- Works great but can leave ruts around corners, I get around this by not using the drive system around trees and landscaping and the ruts have filled in.
4. Bagging system- A : reason- works fine but I don't use it much.
5. Maintenance-C : reason- Spark plug is a little hard to get out because it's right next to the muffler, everything else is normal.
I paid around $400 for it and wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for a mulcher.

The Toro instructions that came with my mower cite 5 hours for the initial "new mower" operation period before the first oil change and recommended 25 hours thereafter between oil changes. This is especially important with the engine design using aluminum piston and cylinder found in many mowers and importantly the case in this model as designed. My 2009 Toro Recycler with the Briggs Engine made it important to be sure the engine has no overheating or overloading episode in the first 5 hours. My instruction manual was not clear on the importance of NOT abusing the engine in these first five hours of operation. Low engine ratings by other owners in reviews are likely to occur when new owner faces the first cutting with his new mower on high and/or wet grass on the first use of the Toro after taking is home (maybe the owner has been without a working mower for several weeks before buying at Home Depot). The 5 hours should be operation that does not overheat or overload the engine because these initial hours are important "break-in" for the engine and initial operation that overheats the engine or stops it by and overload like clogging with wet grass is abuse that at this time can leave permanent engine damage resulting in reduced engine compression (because the cylinders become scratched or "scored" harming the necessary pressure seal that can then be) hurting performance, making starting difficult, and multiple hard hot shutdowns from overload can permanently make the engine problems reported in bad reviews. I was very careful to operate mine in dry grass with deck set to the highest cutting height allowing then engine to run at maximum engine speed without "bogging down" in the first 5 hours. It has been easy to start and a powerful performer since!
The Personal Pace self propel is a great feature I find to be well engineered. Better than any other mower I have used, this feature works well on my mower because it is designed to be "fail-safe". This means abuse by the owner (such as hitting a obstacle that stops the mower progress) should cause the least expensive damage to the drive (or ideally no damage at all). The rear wheels are designed to "slip" before damage to the gear teeth inside (that are plastic to allow them to fail if overloaded - if damaged by external lockup or internal gears being stripped by the axle drive gear, wheels are replaceable with least labor and Toro part cost of about $24). The rear axle has pinion gears of steel that drive each rear wheel that should not be damaged by abuse. The axle is driven by a pulley and gearbox that is stronger and protected by the failure of wheel gear or slippage of rear wheels. The axle (includes the transmission driven by the belt) has a Toro part cost of over $100 and if needing replacement costs much more when including the labor to replace. If my mower begins to lack power while climbing a hill, I adjust the cable as shown in the instruction manual to be sure the drive engages and turns the rear wheels while over adjusting can make it resist pulling the mower backward without releasing the drive properly.
Finally, I avoid starting problems caused by carburetor difficulty (I have never needed more than two pulls guaranteed by Toro) by NEVER FILLING the gasoline tank - only pouring enough into the mower gas tank to cut my yard to the finish for that day then leaving the mower tank as close to empty for storage with little or no gasoline left in the tank of the mower. At the end of the cutting season, I run the engine until it shuts itself off from fuel "starvation" being completely consumed leaving the mower tank empty AND the carburetor (which has a small bowl inside filled from the mower gas tank that holds fuel) thus becoming completely dry of fuel in the mower and empty before storage (my first thing done in the next mowing session is to add SOME fuel from a well sealed gas can, check the oil level, and pull the cord twice to start the mower). My experience has allowed my mower to start next session and next season after I add fresh gasoline to the mower tank and check the oil level carefully before each mowing session and especially assuring an easy start at the beginning of the next season.
As I explain above, these three "wisdom s" applied would certainly solve may of the poor rating experiences by other owners. This is a great mower, well engineered, and I was successful after a careful reading of the instructions and following these common practices for success! Read Less

I have owned a Toro Personal Pace mower for "12" years. It has the original blade, air filter and spark plug. I've used this mower 9 months out of the year, once or twice a week during growing season. It still cranks on the 1st or second pull. I have replaced small parts on it, but no big deal. If this mower ever goes out I have no problem buying another Toro.

I have had mine for 3 years this July and love it! I have a 1/2 acre lawn, do simple maintenance on it and use my Toro (model 20332) once a week from spring throughout the late fall. I mulch it and mulch and bag excessive leaves. When I need a new plug and/or oil and air filter I go to Home Depot in Biddeford, where I bought the mower and it' runs like like new again. Works for me!

It is difficult to start after the first few months of use. The drive system runs continuously, making it difficult to turn or back up. The drive system, when you want power going along rough grass or up hill, is slow and lacks power. It gets easily clogged. Overall, it is the worst mower I've ever used. I would recommend ANY other mower over it.

I have no major issues with this mower. This is the 3rd Toro mower I've had in the last 23-24 years and think it's the best (the self propelling mechanism eventually failed on the 1st 2 mowers and I felt it was not worth repairing). The height adjusting mechanism could be a bit easier to use, but overall, I'd give this mower a good review.

The first thing to check is your gas. Is it fresh or did you use the additive to keep it fresh? That's the number one reason my edger and mower would give me trouble. Try dumping the gas and putting in some fresh and see if that helps.

Answer:
Check to make sure the air cleaner is not blocked with debris. If it is, clean and reinstall. Also, check the fuel tank to be sure it is clean(no debris, blocking the fuel flow. Aside from that, you can check the spark plug by removing and visually inspecting to be sure it is clean and sparking efficiently.

Old gas deteriorates with time. I had your problem two years ago when I had a 2 1/2 gallon gas can that I filled once a year. When I was finishing up the last of the gas in that can, for over three months my old mower was hard to start and barely ran. I bought new gas in a 1 gallon can and when I fueled the mower with that gas, it ran fine. If the mower is gummed up there are additives that you can add to the gas tank to fix the problem. My Toro mower came with a small pouch of additive. Check the Toro website.
There is no need to waste the remaining gas you have on hand. Just add it to your car's gas tank where it will be diluted and the engine, with all of its sophisticated monitoring, will just adjust for the old gas.

Mine has always started on the first, maybe second pull. If yours is hard to start and barely stays running, I'd get a can of carburetor choke cleaner and spray it into the carburetor behind the air cleaner. Sometimes a little piece of gunk can cause tremendous problems. I'm mechanically inclined, so I wouldn't hesitate to remove the carburetor and clean it myself. I do that with all of my lawn equipment Read More

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice I originally was going to buy a Honda but saw a in a review and then I double-checked in the owner's manual about how they are not supposed to be used on hills greater than 20 degrees. I needed a lawn mower to use on a steep hill in my backyard that you can see in the picture. So that ruled out buying a Honda. My previous Craftsman mower had front-wheel drive. This rear-wheel drive Toro does much better on my hill. It has no problems getting up the hill with little effort. The personal pace system took some getting used to but I don't have any problems with it. I have used it for three mowings so far and it has started on the first or second pull each time. This model does not have a folding handle or upright storage feature that some of the other models have but if you don't need that this lawn mower works great. I tried hooking on the garden hose to clean under the mower. It doesn't seem to be worth the hassle. It doesn't remove anything that is stuck on real good. It seems easier to tip the mower a bit and use a screwdriver to loosen any stuck-on grass. It was the same with my Craftsman. August 21, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not buy. My Toro PP with electric start and B&S engine has been terrible. I purchased it in 2011. The engine is hard to start. I've rebuilt the carb had a $100.00 tune up and still I need to use engine start spray to get it going. The transmission failed after 3 years. Costs $50.00 to buy a replacement if I install it myself. It's $150.00 to have a shop do it. Why would the transmission fail on a five year old $400.00 lawn mower? I had a Sears mower prior to this one and it lasted 15 years with no issues. My suggestion, buy a mower with a Honda engine. They just work and work. September 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It Is OK. We bought this product in end of May 2016. Since there is no rain we couldnt really use it more then 5 times yet. My experience is when my husband pulls ,it starts but with me sometimes I have to try 3 times for it to start. I cant say it is one of a kind but does the job. We have huge yard and the only time when it stopped was the time its gas finished. So far so good. Hopefully it doesnt give up on us in couple years. I dont expect it to last 15-20 years but it should last about 4-5 years at least without going to a shop. seriously cant count on any electronics or appliances these days. good luck.. August 12, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely poor mulching in slightly damp grass Bought this to replace and older identical model. Was very pleased with the previous mower. Only replaced it because of much wear and tear after 8+ years of reliable service. This new moert however only works well on relatively short / dry grass. When attempting to cut somewhat longer, somewhat damp grass it fails to mulch to the point the entire mower gets clogged with clippings. After 15 minutes of running I have to turn it on its side and remove the clippings by hand and with a garden hose. This is a problem I never encountered with the older model. If all you ever need to cut is short and dry grass then this will probably work suitably for you. Good luck trying to cut higher / damp grass. August 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poor perforance Lawn mover is to heavy and hard to push without engine running!!! Little to no traction in damp/wet grass, sandy soil, and on hilly ground!! Belt drive is open to getting clogged by grass and belt replacement is a nightmare!! Wash out is a real mess and does a poor job!! Grass catcher makes mover self drive almost useless when bag starts to fill! Clogs and stalls in high grass requiring help to raise and clean area under mover out since grass catches between frame and blade stopping blade from moving! September 4, 2016
