scraper gap

Does anyone know if Toro has addressed the problem of the unlevel scraper that causes blowback under the machine to the back? I noticed that a lot of reviews mentioned this problem.
Asked by: fieldready
I have owned mine for two years now and only get blowback if I run it off the pavement into the grass or if tilting it too far forward before starting to back it up. The blowback snow is minimal at best and is nothing.Love this machine, can do three driveways in the neighborhood in 45 minutes.

The Toro PowerClear 721 QZE is an excellent Snow Blower for moving wet or dry snow. It will even break up packed heavy snow. There is some blow-by created by the thrower that occasionally escapes through the rear through a tiny gap in the back as you are clearing snow. This is not really a problem though as all that has to be done is pull back and go over the area once more. I see many people complain about this but like I said just pull back and do a once more over if you really want to be picky about a few cups of snow per 10-15 feet of forward travel. This is a well-made, powerful, easy to use snow blower that produces terrific results in clearing snow faster to save you some time and muscle ache. I used the Power Clear 421 QE that I got for my mother for about 4 years and the only difference between that model and this one is the engine size. The 421 QE has a 163 cc engine, and the 721 QZE has a 212 cc engine. Either model is simple to use and produces great results. To engage the propeller and begin throwing snow you simply pull the engagement bar down to the handle bar. The paddles of the propeller system are rubber, so this can be used to clear most any hard surface without damage to the surface you are clearing. I used it on my wooden deck and it worked marvelously. It will take snow right down to the surface too so if you have a gravel surface it would be wise to use extra caution and make sure your chute is directed in a safe area because the power of the propel system will chute rocks and any hard debris that are in the blowers path. The directional control of the chute is simple to function with the use of your hand just a simple squeeze of the blue actuator release and slide forward or back to direct the chute (the nice thing about this feature is that you do not have to stop to use the function). To control angle elevation of your chute direction you simply step to the chute and depress the blue release lever and move the chute angle elevation up or down (I have used this function without stopping but I find it’s best to just stop and move to the chute to change the elevation). I found the electric start to be a nice feature as well. If you are having difficulty in pull starting (for me every start has been a first full so far) you simply plug your extension cord into the plug in port and depress the red start button for no longer than five seconds at a time and no less than 2-3 seconds. If you have the key turned to the on position, then have properly primed gas with 3 pushes and have the choke to full set the blower should start right up. Comes with easy to follow instructions and is simple to run. Nice product Toro.

The Toro qze 721 does do a decent job at blowing snow. It doesn't blow anywhere near the 35ft, but I didn't expect it too. I have blown both wet heavy snow, and light snow. Now on to the one flaw in my opinion. When blowing snow it blows some snow back through the deflector. Of course the more you have the chute pointed downward the more snow comes out the back. I checked the deflector and one side has a gap of almost 1/2 inch. I contacted Toro, they told me this was "normal and the deflector being almost 1/2" off on one side was within specs." Toro also stated that this snowblower is like all the others and snow will blow back through the deflector, if its light fluffy snow. It blew back through the deflector every time I have used it, no matter if its heavy wet snow or light powdery snow. But with a large gap on one side, its going to. Toro stated its "Its normal, within specs and not a warranty issue"

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Watch out after the warranty expires! Hi, so I have to send a reality check for all the people out there in regards to this toro 721 model. I have this model. Yes, it is great when it's new! BUT after the warranty expired...that's when i had problems, starting with it would not start. Mine was just a little over the expired time frame. Toro was contacted and they wouldnt do anything for me. I brought it to a couple of local small engine repair people and they were even more useless...and yes I paid for the repair. At this point sometimes it works and sometimes No. I am disappointed and mine is about 6 years old. I THINK they used to come with a 5 year warranty. Its amazing if they shaved the time to 2 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed Took delivery of this snowblower today. Drove to my home and cleared my driveway of 18 - 20 inches of snow. Drove directly to one of our rental properties and cleared driveway in front of 8 garages including a 3 foot deep swath the entire length that was 3 feet wide. The rest was 8-10 inches. The machine performed flawlessly. Ran completely thru the first tank of gas doing all that. Went home, to get a gas can so I could do some more at my house. Filled the tank and it started immediately. We don't normally get that much snow but this was an unusual year for Idaho. I am very happy about the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power to spare This replaced my old Toro single-stage, which I gave to my son for his own home. Changing to a 4-cycle engine brought less noise and more power. So far, it's tackled two snowfalls, each about 8", and I didn't detect the engine slowing down at all. I did need my larger Toro for the driveway approach, due to what the snowplow piled up. I bought the unit with electric start so my wife would be more comfortable with it; however, I can start it with one or two pulls. Due to the prevailing wind direction vs. my driveway's orientation, I have to swing the chute after every pass, so the optional Quick Shoot control for the chute was definitely worth the extra money. I'm very happy with this unit.

The Toro 721 QZE snow blower was very easy to remove from the shipping container and assemble. It was only necessary to move the handle to the operating position and tighten three bolts. The most difficult preparation step was putting the oil in the engine. The location and size of the oil port made it almost impossible to pour the oil in without a very long funnel. Fortunately I had such a funnel and the appropriate size sockets. After putting gasoline into the tank and pushing the primer 3 times, the engine started after two pulls. Since then, only one pull has been necessary to start the engine. I also like the fact that the exhaust smell is virtually non-existent when compared to my previous 2 cycle Toro snow blower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Snow Relief! This is not my first snowblower but it is my first Toro. There was a little sticker shock but I decided to take a chance on it anyway. The other morning I went out to go to work and found that it had snowed and left about 5 wet inches on the ground. This machine made easy work of what my previous 21" machine stuggled with. The model that I have includes the lever on the handle to direct the snow and I can definitely say that it is worth the extra money. As long as this machine holds up I am very pleased.

While this product may work well the first year, that's all the consistency you should expect. It's beyond temperamental. One time it will start on the first pull, the next it won't start at all. This morning it started on the first pull after having sat for 2 months and worked fine. It ran out of gas and when I put more in, it wouldn't start again. I waited 30 mins twice and again, and no luck, so I got to finishing shoveling by hand. This is the second Toro product I've bought that will not start.
