Customer Questions & Answers

Is this model a rear wheel drive?

I have read through the comments and the specifications. I see high wheel drive but do not want to assume it is a rear wheel drive and order one only to find out its a front wheel drive. Can anyone shed some light own this, Rear wheel drive or front wheel drive? Thanks, Jim
Asked by: Jim
Yes and YES. It is rear wheel drive with an intuitive system that makes the mower keep pace with you. If it is too slow the handle goes forward and makes the mower go faster.... too fast the handle you hold moves back and slows the mower... let go and it is in true neutral ( no fighting the gear system to turn corners) . My family all LOVE this mower. ( my wife never mowed with the old mowers because it was too much work but with this mower she says it's just like walking so I get to have her helping with MY chores for once instead of always the reverse). :-)

If you want to stop moving, will the self-drive stop or will the wheels keep turning and drag you forward?

Asked by: Jon
If you stop walking, the mower drive mechanism stops powering the drive wheels.

In order to make safer & easier turns, can you release the handle to disconnect self-propelled featured?

Asked by: Steve
Absolutely! If you release the handle the mower stops and you can maneuver it as you will. My son who mows most of the time LOVES this mower because if is is moving too fast the handle falls farther back and that causes he mower to slow in contrast if it is moving too slow for you, the handle moves forward and speeds up the forward drive. if you just grab the metal bar and not the drive bar, it keeps the mower in neutral and you can maneuver it as you wish.

Bought this mower over the weekend to replace a perfectly good craftsman mower that was over 16 years old. I was looking to get a self propelled model since our new yard has VERY steep hills, and the craftsman was to hard to push up the hills...Well that being said now i am mad i waited this long to buy a self propelled mower! This Toro is amazing, pullled it out of the box, added the oil, and gas, pulled the starter rope and away i went, i made a slight adjustment to the personal pace setting because i could not keep up with the pace, slowed it down a bit(there are instructions on the left side of the handle on how to adjust pace) and now i can go up the VERY steep hills with one hand on the controls. I actually enjoyed mowing the lawn!!! If you are looking for a self propelled mower for steep hills, i would say look no further.

The traction V-belt got caught in the pulley three months after I purchased this lawn mower. Toro said it wasn't covered under the warranty. I had to purchase and install a new belt myself which turned out to be a two hour task. In order to change the belt the user must remove the handle assembly, all of the grass baffles, and the rear axle assembly. I ended up building a support to hold the mower up so I could work on it. This horrible design and cop-out response from Toro makes this a unit to avoid. To make matters worse I purchased a Protection Plan from Home Depot. Buyer beware.

As reported by other reviewers, the left rear wheel on the mower I bought fell off after less than 25 feet of mowing. Reattaching the wheel a few times did no good as it continued to fall off every 25 feet or so. Obviously there is a design problem here, at least with some of the rear-wheel drive Smart Stow mowers. Thankfully my local Home Depot was great to deal with regarding the problem and fully refunded my money. I was satisfied with the look and feel of the mower and liked how easily it started, but none of that really matters if the wheels don't stay on the unit.

Overall, I really like it! Cuts very evenly, and mulches well. The self-propel controls are really easy to use and perfectly match whatever walking speed I want. However, like a couple other reviews, there was an issue with one of the rear wheels. On my first time mowing my lawn, the back left wheel kept coming loose and falling off. I was able to finish by carrying a ratchet in my pocket, but that's not really ideal obviously. There is no nut or other mechanism to keep the nut through the wheels in place. I used some Lock Tite on the threads, and since then haven't had a problem. Though I can only give this mower three stars, it is only because of this one issue, and would otherwise be 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine Fall was upon me but I did get to use it one time. Set up was easy, cut rear corners of the carton, roll it out . Add oil and remove stickers. I'm not absolutely certain it cranked on the first pull but it certainly wasn't very many pulls. No issues there at all. The propulsion system was great, it pulled up my inclined lawn with ease. I think the larger rear tires helped. Also the rear wheel drive. Impressive and waiting impatiently for spring

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Guaranteed to Start? Didn't last one day Day one - unpacked and loved the look, function and ease of install. Mowed the front lawn and the mower bogged down a few times on a deeper section. I raised the platform a click and seemed to run better. Stopped and started several times to empty the bag. I did notice the engine seemed very labored even when not under any strain from grass. Then I stopped the mower to talk to a neighbor for 30 mins. When I returned, the mower wouldn't start. I pulled maybe 30-40 times. I gave it several 10 minute breaks without success before boxing it up to take it back to Home Depot. Several hours later when dropping it off, the manager was able to get it started on the third pull (just barely turned over) so it must have just needed time? I can't be doing that every time I mow. I probably got a lemon but I returned it and not giving it another shot. I can't trust it to work long term

I waited till this model had the EXI engine. I wanted the "Smart stow" feature but I also wanted the OHV engine. So far I have not been disappointed. It started on the first pull and has tons of power. For the money it is hard to beat. The personal pace rear drive works like a champ. It sips fuel. My old mower used twice the fuel for the same job. They say you do not have to change the oil but I still think I will suck it out and do it once a season. I would definitely recommend this mower.

Definitely mulches everything and leaves no clumps. Have only used it a couple of times but there is a huge difference from using the older push mower. I do have only one complaint however. When I first started the mower, it was rattling and wobbling excessively. I immediately turned it off and checked the blade. You can guess - the bolt was loose. I did not expect that from this product. Otherwise, this is a high quality machine.
