The mower will be brand new so can I just keep the original blades and still get the mulching action?

Answer:
I didn't because I could not tell the difference between the blades that came on it and the new blades in the kit. It mulches just fine with the original blades, in my opinion.

I did not use the new mulch blades and it works fine. They appear to be identical to the ones that come on the mower.

I'm not sure on that. They look very similar, but I can tell you that it's VERY simple to do. I'm not mechanical at all and it just took a wrench and some muscle.
I switched mine out and then kept my old blades for the future just in case.

The Toro Recycler mulch kit comes with a set of special blades for mulching. The kit will not mulch effectively without installing these blades.

Only thing I don't like about the new mower is the giant discharge shoot guard. Is the kit made of plastic or metal?

I see no reason to leave the chute on, as it doesn't discharge at all with the mulching kit installed. With the discharge chute removed, you can trim closely on either side of the mower. I took mine off.

Answer:
Yes. I did. The blade surrounds block the shoot. The kit is all heavy steel. It bounces in the box. Be ready to touch up paint before install. It's 2 pieces and they scratch each other in the box. I did reinstall the chute hardware to plug the holes they would leave behind

Yes. With this kit installed you will no longer have a discharge shoot and it does make the mower narrower and easier to maneuver around obstacles.

I would think this would fit any 50" deck. I have the ss5060 and really the only difference besides some comfort features is that the 5060 has 2hp more than the 5000.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 37 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap fastners and poor quality control. The threaded studs were damaged so badly the PLASTIC knobs used to fasten the hunks of heavy steel baffle to the mower deck didn't have anything to grab on to. The pyramid shaped "kick plates" are made of plastic as well. One accidental twig or toy and they are toast. Rather than return it, I figure it's far less of a hassle to re-thread the studs and replace the plastic knobs with more durable nuts. I recommend this anyway for safety reason. If one of the plastic knobs gives way the steel baffles will fall into the spinning blades. This product is outrageously expensive for what you get, but we have no other options. May 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great!! Works great!!! Well worth the money. I have 2 acres and there is no way I'm bagging that much. Cuts down on the dust an leaves the yard looking clean (no clump rows). Instillation instructions fell a little short, but it was easy enough to figure out. If you can turn a wrench and use a drill you can easily install this. Baffles were solid metal (great quality). Directional (triangle) inserts were thick plastic, well made!!!! An absolute must get item for this mower if you are not into bagging. May 13, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Seems well made and not terribly expensive The instructions for installation were really poor. The construction was good. It seems to work well. The blades they gave you were exactly the same as the standard mower blades, certainly not mulching blades. May 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not for the MX5050 50 In Timecutter Ordered this(202558181 TimeCutter 50 In Recycler Kit) Toro # 79019 as a suggested item when I purchased my Toro MX5050 Timecutter. The MX welded deck has different dimensions from the stamped deck and it would not fit. The correct Toro part # you need is 79024 not too sure what the Home Depot Model # is but you need to check if you have an MX deck. The items seem to be in great condition just not for my model. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product Works Great it is very durable and is priced right December 8, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great mulching kit I bought the mulch kit as I like to use the grass clippings to feed the lawn. It is a couple steel parts that help fully enclose the blades. The blades it came with appear to be identical as the ones on it already. I left my old blades on as they look identical and are new. It mulches great with some issues. First I cut my Lawn on the slow smart speed setting. At the high setting bumps are to much for my back. Even on the slow setting in dense parts of the yard you will hear a pitch change. When you hear this the vacuum of the blades has all the air above the blades full of grass clippings. You have two choices at this point. Slow down and wait for the pitch to return to normal or drive on and have clumpy mulch. The grass will still get cut but you can see mulch clumps. When I cut my lawn slowing down at the pitch change in one dense area you can see no grass clippings at all. My neighbor who bagged his grass was so impressed he went and bought a mulching kit for his cub cadet. It was just a plug and blades. He has bad clumps and is disappointed. Also the time cutters slow speed is still far faster than his. He is set on buying one like mine someday. My other neighbor who cuts his grass before me gets lots of clumps from his snapper. I raise my deck all the way up so I don't cut a stripe in his yard and mulch his clump piles up. He loves my mower too! So why not 5 stars? If you use the insanely fast mow and go speed you will have clumps. The steel parts are heavy and not packaged well enough to prevent the paint from scratching. So if you hate rust you will be painting them before installing. Over all I love my mower and the mulching kit. Plus I have an extra set of blades. July 29, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Cuts way down on the dust I just bought a house with about 3 acre of mowing. I had been using the side discharge but there was a LOT of dust on places on the yard. I bought this so I could keep the cuttings and mulch them up to improve the quality of the soil. I have to say installation was easy but make sure you have help as the deck is a bit heavy. The only concern I had was the kickers as they were plastic and held on with only screws. So far so good. I have been using this now for the past month and am very happy with it. I have had to slow down a bit to keep the cut looking even. I am actually looking forward to getting to the leaf cover and seeing how much time I am really going to save. In short very nice product, a bit pricey for what you get but looking to have it last for many years. October 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far, so good. Not too difficult to install. I did it by myself. Blades need to be torqued on. I'm a little concerned about the durability of the three plastic deflector things. Only mowed once so far. Seems to work great. October 15, 2015
