Customer Questions & Answers

Kohler vs. Kawasaki

I was wondering what if any difference there is between the engines. I am looking at the 50 in. Hvy. Duty deck or standard deck with either engine pairing. I'm mowing about 3.5 acres in S. Florida of medium to heavy crabgrass with weeds and Bermuda grass where we turn out our horses. Very little underbrush except along fence line. Thanks

Kawi is definitely the better engine!!

What makes this OK for terrain and hills?

I am looking to get a new mower and wanted a ZTR. I rented one and had a hard time on hills. Not just turning but going down then and maintaining traction and straight line. This mower (as opposed to other that say flat) says it works on terrain and hills. Is there something different about the drive that makes this work on hills?
Asked by: Mowerdude
Traditional zero turn mowers have front caster wheels making it more difficult to drive in a straight line when mowing across a sloped surface. The Toro TimeCutter zero turn tractors have steerable front wheels that make them perform very well on sloped surfaces. Toro recommends that the TimeCutter zero turns not be used on slopes greater than 15 degrees.

TimeCutter MX5050 50 in. Fab 24 HP V-Twin Zero-Turn Riding Mower with Smart Speed is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Value zero turn. Period. Should have bought this a long time ago. Have had it for a year now, and this mower cuts fantastic. I made the jump from a traditional rider to the zero turn, and I'll never go back. I researched for several years, and the Toro is what I kept going back to. It's a few bucks more then some of the other models (even entry level Toro), but this is well worth it. But that being said, I got more features and value than more expensive zero turns. The Fab cutting deck, better trans boxes, better seat...don't skimp. Oh, your welcome Toro - I know I have personally sold 3 over the last year just raving how my MX5050 performed. Neighbors are jealous. I Added: Bagger kit & Striping Kit

I am absolutely convinced that you cannot find a better zero turn riding mower at this price point. The MX5050 is very well built and simple to operate. Not to mention comfortable as well. Maintenance is straight forward. Give yourself a little time and read the manual. It's easy. As with any mower, cutting a wet lawn is, in my opinion, messy and dangerous due to traction issues. I recommend clearing accumulated clippings from the top of the mower deck after use. I removed the two deck pulley covers (very simple) which tend to trap grass within. I cut our 1.25 acre lawn for 12 seasons with a brand X 48" lawn tractor and hated it. The penalty was severe for being late on a cutting requiring slowing to a crawl. Tall grass not a problem for the MX5050. Last May we went on vacation for two weeks. My wife asked, "What about the lawn?". I said "Not a problem for the Toro". And it wasn't. There's snow on the ground now and I have to admit I'm yearning for grass cutting season to begin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toro MX5050 and Kohler 7000 Series Engine - A Perfect Combination Bought an MX505 w/Kohler 7000 series 24hp engine 3 months ago. Could not be happier with the way the mower cuts, handles, comfortable seating, heavy-duty build quality and that wonderful Kohler engine. I installed the mulch kit before using for the first time. In grass taller than it really should be for this set up, mower never labors and cuts easily and cleanly without leaving clumps or visible clippings. The Kohler engine uses no oil, uses little fuel compared to other mowers I have owned, runs smoothly and has power to spare. Could not be more pleased with this package!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed Bought a "reconditioned" model. It was returned, I was told because of a bad hour meter. Meter displayed 30 hours. Hard to start on first ise, but managed to cut a couple of acres. Was pleased with everthing but the starting. Went to use it for the second time and it would not start. Using ethanol free gas, so thats not an issue. Went down troubleshooting list. When I got to air filter, it has oil in it, looked older than the five hours I put on it. Ran fingers across top of airfilter cap and was very oily. Taking it back to Home Depot tomorrow. What a waste of money and effort.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would not buy again I have had this mower about 4 months with about 10 hrs. so far. This mower has been a nightmare. Broke the first blade belt at about 4 hrs and broke the second at about 8.5 hrs. Since the unit was delivered there have been random occasions when starting the engine that a large cloud of white smoke comes out the exhaust. Have had two occasions where the mower would not start, only click. Service dept. at local Toro service center told me that Toro has had problems with some of these welded decks throwing belts. That is what the mechanic told me, their official position was that a stick or something must have caused the belt to come off. Yea, right. The mower has always tracked off to the side. I adjusted it some but not perfect. Bottom line: for $4000 I expected better from what was sold as a top quality mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I had bought one sooner Ordered on line and the next day the local dealer called me to confirm my order. Within 3 days the dealer called to setup delivery. Was not home when it was delivered so did not get to talk to the dealer about the operation. Got home read the instructions and I was off mowing in no time. Took about 10 minutes to learn the controls. The wife even commented on how fist I picked it up. The height adjustment allows much more height on my grass compared to my old mower. The grass look better then it has in years. With this new mower it takes about half the time to mow then it did with my old mower. New mower has allot of power and starts easy. If you're looking for a new mower a zero turn is the way to go and you can't go wrong with this mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why did I wait to buy this thing? I've only had this thing for three weeks, but man is it slick. 1.3 acres used to take 2.75 hours to mow with a 38" rider. I've mowed twice with the TimeCutter and have less than 2.5 hours on the meter. It was really easy to learn, especially with the Trim Speed setting to slow you down. The amount of trimming has also reduced, probably by a third. The whole machine feels sturdy and rugged. Do take the slope warnings seriously, especially in wet conditions. I literally can't wait to get out and mow each week now!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stays in the shop for repairs I am not someone who writes reviews but I hope this helps another homeowner. I have had this mower for about a year now and it stays in the shop more than it stays at my house. I'm not sure if it's a sensor that keeps going out but when I go to close the arms it kills the motor. Then after some time of that it just won't crank at all. maybe a choke malfunction. This is way too much money for this machine. I will not recommend this mower to anyone. I will be selling this mower as soon as it gets out of the shop!
