I have a smaller Toro that is much older and I never work on it at all. You need to be really handy to own this or expect it to be in the shop a lot. When it runs it works great. I would highly recommend getting the extended warranty if you are going to buy this and have a spare mower handy for when this one is in the shop. Mine is 3 1/2 years old and I consider it far from reliable. But I've almost worked on everything on it so I'm pretty familiar with it. I haven't had any issues with the pulleys yet which others have talked about. Read Less

Just got my 2012 Time Master back from the repair shop with a bill of over $250. Have about 100 hours on it and it was not abused, unless you call mowing the grass abuse. The transmission was completely ruined. Called Toro and they did not acknowledge any systemic problem with their transmission but I expected the drive system to outlast the mower deck.

Please read the Safety section of the Operator's Manual for directions on safe operation of the mower. You can view the Operator's Manual online at http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/97/97789d82-14e9-4987-9fb3-5f5e4b1f2841.pdf. Below is an excerpt from the manual regarding safe mower operation.
General Operation
• Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual(s) before starting.
• Do not put hands or feet near or under the machine. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times.
• Only allow responsible adults, who are familiar with the instructions, to operate this machine.
• Clear the area of objects such as rocks, wire, toys, etc., which could be thrown by the blade. Stay behind the handle when the engine is running.
• Be sure the area is clear of bystanders before operating. Stop machine if anyone enters the area.
• Do not operate machine barefooted or while wearing sandals. Always wear substantial footwear.
• Do not pull the machine backward unless it is absolutely necessary. Always look down and behind before and while moving backward.
• Never direct discharged material toward anyone. Avoid discharging material against a wall or obstruction. Material may ricochet back toward the operator. Stop the blade when crossing gravel surfaces.
• Do not operate machine without the entire grass catcher, discharge guard, rear guard, or other safety protective devices in place and working.
• Never leave a running machine unattended.
• Stop the engine and wait until the blades come to a complete stop before cleaning the machine, removing the grass catcher, or unclogging the discharge guard.
• Operate machine only in daylight or good artificial light.
• Do not operate machine while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Never operate the machine in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing; walk; never run.
• Disengage the drive system, if so equipped, before starting the engine.
• If the machine should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine and check for the cause immediately. Vibration is generally a warning of trouble.
• Always wear eye protection when operating the machine.
• See the manufacturer's instructions for proper operation and installation of accessories. Use only accessories approved by the manufacturer.
Children
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the machine and the mowing activity. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them.
• Keep children out of the mowing area and under the watchful care of a responsible adult other than the operator.
• Be alert and turn machine off if a child enters the area.
• Never allow children to operate the machine.
• Use extra care when approaching blind corners, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may block your view of a child.

Slope Operation
Slopes are a major factor related to slip-and-fall accidents, which can result in severe injury. Operation on all slopes require extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it.
• Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.
• Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other hidden objects. Uneven terrain could cause a slip-and-fall accident. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
• Do not mow on wet grass or excessively steep slopes. Poor footing could cause a slip-and-fall accident.
• Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments. You could lose your footing or balance.

Once unboxed, will this mower fit, strapped in, part ways in an average compact/midsize sedan trunk ?

It's not the width but the length versus height that has me worried. If the engine and deck combination height is too great and that height is too far forward on the machine, then the front wheels will not allow for it to roll far enough in the trunk area before the machine hits the top trim of the trunk. If it'll roll a couple of feet into the trunk area before the top hits, then it can be successfully strapped in and the trunk lid strapped down over the top of the rest of the machine hanging out. My next car will be a hatchback or wagon just for this reason. Can carry many more items of more height. I can put my 22", highwheel mower all the way and close the lid in my VW Jetta, but this thing is a beast compared to the 22.

I've had the mower for a while now; I ended up having it shipped for free so didn't need the car. I can now answer my own question. Yes it will fit to the point to tie it in my VW Jetta Sedan trunk (2005.5-2008 model). I wasn't concerned about the lifting part; I had the spec's on the weight, but putting a walk-behind in a car trunk can be easily managed (weight wise) with two persons; one on each side; grabbing both the front and rear wheel on each side and sort of easily dumping rolling it in place. My question was with regards to the height. If an item is too tall, then it can't be placed in far enough through a trunk opening so that most of the weight is in the trunk and not out of the trunk. In the case of this item; and a VW Jetta, which has a pretty large opening for a compact car (looks larger than a Civic) it does fit to the point that it can be tied down. And this means I can haul it off for service if necessary w/o having to get another vehicle or trailer. Of course a hatchback or wagon would work better, but a Jetta does work; albeit, just barely. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Master of Time This is a great lawnmower. Overtime it will pay itself off with the 7 additional inches of deck you get. I just wish the bag and the fuel tank were bigger. It's very easy to use and easy to maintain. My yard is .57 acres and in my opinion not big enough for a 42 inch riding lawnmower, but too big for a regular 22 inch mower. I wish the price was a little less, but this really is the Cadillac of lawnmowers and one of the few lawnmowers in this size. May 3, 2016

They have added extra material in the corner of the bagger where it would typically wear out. For this year they have also added a metal plate to the front of the engine to protect the carb and throttle assembly. The engine is still underpowered for cutting thru really tall or wet grass. But for the average homeowner the larger deck will make short work of your weekend mowing projects. March 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by One full season of use after 10 years with a Honda 21" Hard to give up the Honda motor but moved to a house with a much larger lawn and with two little kids wanted to cut down on the mow time. Not too many options out there for large cut, walk behind mowers that are well built and are moderately priced. Pretty good investment from what I can tell so far. One full season into this mower and really the only issue I've seen is in the grass catcher which has holes starting to from from the tabs toward the back/bottom of the shoot (pictures attached). Nice stripes (3rd picture attached and without the Toro accessory). Replaced the oil after the first couple of uses with synthetic and and will continue on each year with. I usually leave the cut height towards the 2nd to highest level setting and when the grass grows thick and tall in the spring the motor does seem to be slightly underpowered as others have mentioned. However, it really hasn't been an issue since I just slow the pace down a bit and adjust. I'll say the old Honda still starts up on the first pull every time even after 10 years. The Toro, usually on the first pull but sometimes it takes two :) I'd probably give it 4.5 stars if I could. April 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Mixed feelings I initially gave this mower 5 stars. After not quite two summers of use, I have to downgrade it to three stars, from 5 stars. I have a large yard (.75 acres, minus house, driveway, landscaping). I walk four miles while cutting my grass. The gas tank is not large enough to cut the whole yard. I'm 60, and I can walk for 65 minute, but my mower can't. The mower is heavy, and my wife cannot horse it around trees and landscaping unless the ground is flat. Quality of cut is excellent. Quality of parts is not. I have already replaced two belts, one pulley and today a plastic guide/anchor on the blade engage/brake cable broke. Parts not terribly expensive, but a mower should run AT LEAST two years before parts start breaking. June 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Monster Mower This mower is just as I expected, powerful and efficient.. Cut my mowing time to a third and the lawn could not look better. July 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Beast of a Mower - But Too Heavy to Handle I have a very large somewhat hilly yard and was hoping this mower would work out for me and my family. After two full cuts I realized it was just to heavy for me and my wife and kids to handle. I took it back to Home Depot and they cheerfully accepted the return and completely understood my rationale. It would be perfect for a large lawn with NO hills. It is a very powerful machine and cuts beautifully, but it was very heavy and a challenge to maneuver. If it was 4-wheel drive it might have worked out. But the biggest challenge was the occasional need to pull it backward on a modest hill which is sometimes necessary. If I was younger and stronger it might have worked out better. June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Mower I've had a Toro Recycler 22" for the past 7 years. I've never had a problem with it. I was a little hesitant to purchase this mower because the engine is the same as the 22". However, given my experience with Toro, I figured I would give it a try. Anyway, this mower is great. It provided a nice cut and didn't struggle with my lawn at all. I live in the north where the grass can get thick and heavy, and this mower had no problem with it. I hope I have the same luck with this mower that I had with the 22". June 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible. Don't buy! Warning: Do not buy this piece of tripe! Just partially finished by 3rd mow on a 10K ft2 property. Mower is now sitting on my back lawn. Supremely under powered!!! Won't cut through 4" grass without bogging down. Takes me 10 minutes more to mow my lawn with this sad excuse for a mower than it does with my 21" Honda. Now, a piece has fallen off and I will have to fix that before I carry on with the mow. People, I am telling you, buy anything else but this mower. To all of you that gave this thing 4 or 5 stars, shame on you for misleading the rest of us. June 12, 2016
