Customer Questions & Answers

Does this model need a periodic oil change? Do you have to run the engine till all the gas is used up after each cut? Can it go backwards?

Asked by: Evan
If you get the new 163 cc EXi engine they tell you to just add oil to top off, and no Oil changes necessary, but I would still change the oil at least once a year because even if the oil does not break down you will get particles from the exhaust into your crankcase and friction will do it's damage over time.. The 190 cc 7.25 torque engine is recommended that you change the oil after 5 hours new out of the box and then yearly.

Can you store it folded up with gas and oil in it ?

Asked by: bryzzer
Yes. I fill it with gas immediately before use, mow the yard (which burns some of the gas), allow it to cool (while I trim and edge), then I put the mower in the SmartStow position and stow. Works perfect. I can have two cars in the garage and move the mower in and out without having to move either car.

How is traction with the front wheel drive versus the rear wheel drive recyclers?

It would seem with a bag it would start to lose traction with all the weight to the rear.
Asked by: Mainecoon
I haven't had any issues. I think the front drive is nice because when I turn, I pivot it on the back wheels (which aren't spinning even though I keep the drive lever depressed), then when I set it back down it starts going again. Whenever I want a little extra drive, I lift the bar a tiny bit and the front wheels pull more.

22 in. High Wheel Variable Speed Walk Behind Gas Self Propelled Mower with SmartStow is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 936.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Mower I have two of these mowers and the only issue I have is that throttle cable snapped out of the thing a ma-gig on one of them. Other than that they are holding up fine. The front wheels seem to wear out but, I think it's a very good mower. By the way I use them in my landscaping business and to tell you the truth it's the next best thing i have found to a small commercial mower. The deck is all one piece (metal) not plastic connected to metal. Trust me I have gone through many a mower. Honda would be the next best thing but, I don't like them they bounce around a lot, this more is more steady. Hope this helps you. I would have rather had a RWD unit.

Shoved it in the back seat of an unhappy wife's car, got home, unboxed it, put oil in it, went and made a fresh cup of high-energy green tea with lemon and a PB&J sandwich because I just knew that I was going to be mowing like a king and whistling, "There's green in that there grass". Sadly, I never got past "Go", and ended up bemoaning "Another one bites the dust" instead. The reason: the handle would not lock in place. When I returned from fueling me up, I was about to fuel up the mower but realized a handle bracket was bent into a u-shape, (see photo), preventing the handle from locking in place. Aargh! (what I actually said is not printable). Where is their Quality Control because this came from the factory just like that. I called Toro CS to see if they could not send me a replacement bracket. My intent was to torque it in place with some vice grips so I could at least get my intended and well prepared work done. But that idea went over like a lead balloon. Toro CS told me that they could not send a replacement bracket because that one did not have a part number on it, even though she was looking at the exact part on the parts diagram. (murmur, murmur...again, unprintable and universally understood language). Anywho, I packed Mr. Toro up, stuffed it in the back of my wife's car (while she was still asleep), and whisked it back to HD for an exchange. The HD reps were awesomely helpful it expediting the exchange process (after I fully Quality Checked the replacement mower). So far, I have used it twice with zero problems. The first time was to actually cut the grass; the second time was to bag the billion and one leaves that continually carpet my yard. My next purchase...a chainsaw, just sayin'!!

After taking the mower out of the box i discovered the right rear wheel was deformed when it was made . It was so bad it made the mower un usable . Inst. sheet says do not take machine back where you purchased it but to call the company for warranty. I called Toro and was told where to take it for repair and i did. I was told seeing you did not purchase the mower here we wont fix it, so take it back to where you purchased it I'm 90 years old and not "political correct" told them what i though and left. I then returned the mower to Home Depot Had no problem at all. They looked at it said they would replace it then discovered they didn't have any more in stock. Home Depot then gave me a much higher priced mower to replace it at no increase in price. Bet you can guess where i will be shopping from now on!! Home Depot you are great!

I took it out of the box and it ran and cut fine but the blade control bar did not work and the engine would not shut off so I had to let it run out of gas. There is no emergency procedure in the manual for turning it off. The cables to the power drive and engine rub the left rear wheel. The oil filler cap stuck and the oil filler tube to the engine is cheap plastic so it broke completely in two when I tried to unscrew it to do the five hour oil change (yes it is true plastic gets brittle in cold weather). My last Toro mower lasted 12 years and wasn't in the shop once. This one is on its second trip to the shop in the first five hours and is probably not worth fixing so I'm out $300+.

This mower leaves 2" of grass uncut on each side of the mower where the wheels roll over the grass. If you overlap 3-4" on the next pass, this 'ridge' of grass remains uncut. It also leaves a trail of unmulched grass in the wheel tracks. I only used it once, and my lawn had uncut ridges all over it. I'm returning it to the store. I did not try the rear bagger or side discharge since I bought it to use for mulching. It does have sufficient power and starts easily, about the only good things I can say about it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from From AWD to NoWD... Second Toro purchased in less that 2 months and still having problems with how they run. We are having a lot of trouble with our mower which is not even 2 months old yet. So much so that we are back to mowing with our 18 year old Craftsman mower that has only ever been serviced by my husband. To list the troubles... 1) The Toro Mower does not idle properly, 2) the drive belt to the awd is cracked and my husband noticed it on the first cleaning after our first mow. 3) the front wheels are already cracking. 4) It is very hard to start even if it is already running 5) sometimes we have to pull it more than 5-10 times with a warm engine to get it re-started 6) it chugs as if it is about to die after starting, and we have to wait 5 minutes before we can begin mowing 7) the cable for the self propel broke off. We are told we need to have it repaired and keep this model, but we are extremely concerned that our list of troubles at just 2 months old is just too long to keep going with this mower. To note, this is the second Toro mower we purchased in the last 2.5 months. before this we purchased from home depot, we originally purchased model number 20371 which also had problems idling and starting so we had returned it after owning it for less than 30 days. Basically we are having all of the same problems again with this upgrade model and find this very concerning. We were told by the repair department in Home Depot that they will try and repair this mower, but we are very concerned that we are just going to get back something that is patched and still not durable, and will only quickly break again. :( :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all-around product This mower was out of the box, ready to go. Ease of set-up, start and storage are all terrific pros. The ease of cleaning also diminishes my need to clean the storage space along with prolonging the life of my mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first mower I'm tight for space in my garage so I needed a mower that stores easily. This mower does that. It comes already assembled and all you have to do is extend the handle, add oil, add gas and go! I used it without the bag and cutting was an effortless exercise. Once I was done, I let it cool off, clean it down, then stow it back in its corner. Easy! Done!
