Is it ok to use it with a 100 ft extension cord 16-Gauge with 3 conductors. 10 amp, 1250 watt?

Asked by: MrPP
I hope that none of these "opinion" givers are electricians that ever work on someones house. The answer to this question is easy to find in any wire guide. Copper wire and 20 amps needs 14awg up to 25", 12awg up to 50", 10awg up to 75 feet and 8awg for 100".

Will the vacuum mulcher work without the bag attachment, i.e., can I just vacuum leaves and have the mulch fly out the other end fall on the ground rather than in a bag? Does the bag need to be attached for the vacuum to work, in other words?
Asked by: LeafGrouch
Yes you can use it without the bag attachment but I'd recommend wearing a mask and goggles because it shreds leaves into mostly dust. If wind is blowing toward you you'll want the bag attachment. Good luck!

I purchased this blower/vac a few months ago and am generally satisfied with the blower performance. The vacuum function leaves much to be desired as I get fine debris blowback at the junction of the cloth bag and plastic collar, so protective eyewear is a must. When I contacted Toro customer service they stated that they had not redesigned or changed the bag in any way that would solve this problem and essentially blew off my inquiry by suggesting I buy a new bag for $25 or cart it miles to a service center. Why buy a bag with the same problem?? If you need the vacuum function, buy a black and decker or another manufacturer besides Toro.

I presently own an older Toro electric leaf blower, which is about 9 years old. I purchased this Toro Ultra Plus unit based on 2 things: 1. my old unit switch was acting up - not wanting to stay on the high level when I blew off my ex-large driveway. 2. was the recommendation from "Consumer Report". Be informed that I was very happy with the older unit and the same with the new Ultra Plus unit - as it does the same great performance, BUT the new unit seems to me, much quieter. I also like the new units electric cord retainer and the option on the blower ends, although I prefer the most forceful :) Thank You Toro and Thank You Home Depot for a competitive price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Toro UltraPlus Blower Vac (51621) Recently I had been looking for a more powerful leaf blower which would actually work upon pine needles, because my ‘as seen on TV’ brand blower had a difficult time doing so. After reading several online reviews, as well as watching various ‘You Tube’ user videos, I opted for the Toro model #51621 (w/ the extra accessories). Well, as a blower, this unit is very powerful and does a great job at blowing away dry pine needles off my driveway, sidewalks, and deck; however, as a vacuum, it will only pick-up dry pine needle ‘stragglers’ (with some coaxing) at the highest speed setting. Sadly, this machine will not pick-up small clumps of dry pine needles. I’m sure that this is due to the fact the opening (diameter) of the vacuum’s pick-up tube is just too large; therefore, not allowing adequate suction power (as clumps of dry pine needles are substantially less in mass, but heavier than leaves; i.e. more air is actually vacuumed up the tube than pine needles). Now, I will admit that the metal impeller’s mulching feature did a pretty good job on those pine needles which the vacuum did pick-up, as it rendered them to small particles and some just to virtual dust. The oscillating attachment works very well (even upon the pine needles) and precludes me from having to sweep the unit back and forth as I’m walking forward. Though it does allow for better speed control, I just wished this unit had an additional on/off switch (emergency shut-off) in addition to the variable speed control dial. Converting to vacuum mode was initially a bit cumbersome, because I had a bit of difficulty removing the blower assembly/tube. The vacuum bag is a bit awkward, because it sticks out in front of the user; thus, forcing me to actually hold the bag’s strap in my right hand (along with the machine) as I’m guiding the vacuum’s pick-up tube with my left hand. Slinging the strap over either shoulder would just not work correctly for me. The bag’s bottom zipper is robust and easily allowed me to empty the contents right into a trash can. Unlike some of the other reviewers, for me, a cord lock isn’t necessary, because at time of purchase, I had also purchased the correct 100’ locking-type 14 gauge exterior extension cord which actually locks onto the unit’s short inlet plug (polarized dongle) cord. The cord is a model #630-34033CR 100 ft. 14/3 red 'StayPlug' extension cord (featuring locking technology) by Cerrowire and is also available at The Home Depot. The only drawback is for the fact that dragging a 100’ 14 gauge electrical cord behind me does add to the overall weight of the unit. Note: A 100’ 14 gauge (correct/required) extension cord is substantially heavier and stiffer than the usual 100’ orange 12 gauge (incorrect/not recommended) extension cord. Well, it appears (that at least for me) this unit will just be used as a blower only. Unfortunately, I will just return to raking-up the pine needles into a snow shovel and then transferring them to a trash can as before. It would’ve been really nice if this unit could also vacuum small clumps of dry pine needles as well. Heck, it would be nice if Toro made available a smaller vacuum tube diameter adapter to be used solely on pine needles, as I would most certainly purchase it...hint...hint.

The UltraPlus 250 picks up maple leaves from my deck and leaves from my gravel patio without picking up rocks. It mulches leaves to a powder and the bag empties fairly easily into a trash can. The cord retainer works well and the unit is light and quiet enough to operate for an hour or so without discomfort.

The zipper on the collection bag is very poor. It did not even last one season's use before it started pulling apart. As it is essential to proper operation; Toro, please fix this. Secondly, it does as expected to pickup and mulch leaves but the intrusion of the smallest twig or wood chip will clog the intake and cause you to quit, turn it off, and clear the congestion. In that I have never raked leaves without an occasional twig or stick, stopping every two minutes is annoying. Surely, engineering can do better. Nonetheless, it does assist and I do recommend it.

The bag is comfortable to wear but of course gets heavy when it starts to fill up. The strap has plenty of length to adjust to your height. I found most others do not. The attachment that spreads the blowing pattern is useless. They can leave that out as far as I am concerned. The metal impeller is the only way to go. It does a great job. Your throwing away your money if you buy the plastic. Just think, plastic. The design to mulch leaves, etc., is just great. I have had a few of these type of machines and this one out performs them all. A GREAT buy !!!

This does what I wanted it to do - vacuum up leaves and mulch them into small pieces. I'm fairly sure it would be more than adequate as a blower, since it is rated at 12 amps (make sure to use a heavy enough cord). Because of the inconvenience of the cord, I tend to use my gas blower (and rake) to blow the leaves into convenient piles, then suck them up and mulch them into the Toro attachment that fits over a trash can or other large capacity container (the one I use is a large plastic tube designed to fit into a disposable yard waste bag). The smaller canvas bag included with the unit is fine for smaller jobs, such as vacuuming the bush trimmings. It is much more ergonomically suited to the job than the conversion for my gas blower. I believe the extra mulching attachment included with this particular blower is worthwhile having. I've vacuumed some fairly moist leave without a clogging problem. With leaves, I usually lay the unit on the ground and rake the leaves into the nozzle with the unit running at full speed (see photo). It works.
