Customer Questions & Answers

Is this product only available in the eastern half of the US?

Is this what you use to lay tile?

Asked by: Carkids
This is an excellent material to use as shower tile backer board. Like all tile backers the seams and any nail or screw penetrations must be sealed with a good fiberglass tape and waterproofing coating such as, Red Guard or several other comparable products. Also, the bottom edge, if used with a tub or manufactured shower pan, must have a 1/4" or more gap above the flat surface and must be completely sealed with 100% silicon caulking. If it is a formed concrete over pan liner it must be waterproofed where it meets the concrete. Again do not allow the panel to touch the concrete base! There must be a 1/4" minimum gap to prevent potential wicking. Like any other product it must be installed correctly. Refer to U-Tube for videos on installation techniques.

Watched a few videos on install and taping seams. If the seams are siliconed like the manufacture recommends its all water proof now and pretty stable bond. it would be not necessary to add a floated mesh and thin set.
Asked by: Dave
The silicone between the sheets provides a moisture proof seal at the joints. The mesh tape embedded in the thin set provides structural support to the joint. I would continue to install the mesh tape and thin set.

What type of screws to be used

Asked by: NA
For the installation of DensShield Tilebacker 1/2" to wood framed walls you can use 1 1/2" galvanized roofing nails or 1 1/4" buglehead, rust resistant screws spaced 6" on center along the framing.

DensShield 1/2 in. x 2.7 ft. x 5 ft. Glass Mat Tile Backer is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dens shield Tile Backer The product is exactly as advertised. Cuts and installs like Drywall, but is waterproof. Only need to seal the seams and screw holes with something like Laticrete Hydro Barrier and microfiber fiberglass tape(not drywall tape). I learned a lot by watching Tilemasterga's YouTube videos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend for countertops and floors Have used Durock and DensShield in the past. Durock is very heavy, hard to cut, sharp and we were not able to find it in thinner pieces. Used Durock on our first project over 10 years ago on an entry floor as we didn't know about DensShield. Had to use thicker piece and even after raising door up as far as possible and trimming still not enough clearance for a rug. Had we been able to use DensShield we wouldn't have had to trim and could fit a rug. Have used DensShield on a kitchen floor, bathroom floor and two bathroom countertops, age of projects from about 3 years ago to nearly 10 years ago, under ceramic, porcelain and travertine and no issues at all about wear, adhesion, etc. Easy to transport, cut, screw into, etc. No dust issues when cutting. Revisited options including Hardie as we prepare for another large kitchen project and have chosen to use DensShield again. Don't know if this is recommended for wet applications like shower/tub walls though.

I used it for the shower walls in my guest bathroom and I had no help moving or installing the boards. So it is easy to install and use. Cut it outside with a utility blade and a straightedge on a large piece of cardboard or plywood because it does make a mess. But it cuts with a sharp edge. Do not forget to caulk between each board to ensure a complete seal. The product has now been installed for 7 years and there are no cracks in the tile or grout. I screwed it to the studs by hand without a drill to install the screws so it is not that hard to do. Also, do not forget to use the specially treated green screws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to use...just like drywall Easy to work with, treat it like drywall...my only complaint is the fiberglass dust makes you itchy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Denshield This is a rigid tile backer that cuts and installs like regular drywall. When installed right it is virtually waterproof. Once tile is adhered it will not come off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DensShield renders all other tile backer obsolete. I have used DenShield in at least eight bathrooms and two kitchen tile intall projects. This is a fantastic product. Extremely easy to cut, level and install tile. The ability to got direct to the wall studs is a great help to keep wall profiles narrow (instead of sheet rock plus cement board plus tile). I can not understand why Home Depot in Northern California do not inventory the product. It is a vast improvement over the alternatives.
