Caspar Friedrich, besides being a Romantic, was a pioneer of the symbolic landscape. He used trees, mist, mountains and the light of sunset (in particular) to symbolize Christian religious themes in a sort of mysterious mood. At the time, this represented a major break from traditional, representational Biblical scenes. He is remembered, too, for exclusively working from German land and seascapes and vivdly coveying northern light.
