Customer Questions & Answers

Should Allure Ultra be applied directly over cement floor which has some staining & glue residue or should some sort of vapor barrier be put down?

Cement floor has been scraped and leveled
Asked by: Anonymous
My advice is do not waste your money putting this down in the basement. I laid down Allure Ultra and what seemed like a perfect fit only ended up as boards peeling apart later. When I told Home Depot about it, they were quick to point out my floor must not be level. I did patch jobs to even out the floor, but if your basement floor is sloped to a central drain, don't even bother because you will be flushing your money down the toilet. I've concluded the $1700+ I spent on Allure Ultra has been the worst money I have ever spent. If people tell you otherwise, be very cautious... you are rolling the dice on whether or not it works, so unless you're OK with potentially losing the money you've spent, don't do it. You have been warned.

How is this stuff cut?

I scored twice and got nowhere. My husband scored several more times and finally broke through after he slammed it onto the wall corner. I can't imagine doing 312 square feet like this! The knife blades were new.
Asked by: wonderwoman
There is a cutter for this flooring that is about $50 that I used to do two bedrooms and closets that works great. Scoring wasn't easy and time consuming.

Asked by: creativedrapery

Installing under a toilet and cabinets

We were considering Pergo but decided on this product because it is 100% waterproof. Our research on floating floors is to "not" install them under islands and cabinets but yet under a stove and refrigerator is fine. I read that some people have installed this product under cabinets but what about toilets? I cannot find anything in the instructions as to what the manufacturer recommends. Thoughts?
Asked by: KenR
I removed the toilet, installed the flooring and reinstalled the toilet. It is not hard to do and you will have a much nicer, more professional looking job, and not have to be concerned about perfectly trimming the planks to meet the toilet base. Just be sure to buy a new wax ring and maybe longer toilet hold down bolts, which are not expensive at all.

The flooring is being installed backwards on the box. When I saw this I thought, "No way would they print the photo on the box wrong, this must be how to install it." Well, I was wrong. They messed up on the photo on the front of the box. I'll attach it to this review. Check out the installation video then look at the box photo. I cut an entire box for my first run in a large room. Had to throw it all out. It does make me question their quality control when the instructions on the box is wrong. I mean, how does a company miss that?

The color and finish is very attractive with deep and medium tones. If you go only on the look and potential level of wear, this would get a 5 star. I purchased 46 boxes to replace all of our open concept first floor. It says the easiest floor to install. It is pretty simple, not the easiest to install. I was able to lay down 19 boxes through the living, breakfast and kitchen areas. When starting your first row and going under door trim, it is simple. Ending a room under door trim is almost impossible. That being said, after I finished those rooms for the night everything look great. I had tight seams everywhere except under that door trim.... I took the next day off and came down the stairs on day 2 after installation and "Houston we have a problem". In various places the flooring is separating. Seams on both the long and short end are coming apart. There is no consistency to where it is coming apart. I looked into how to repair these and there is not a way without removing the entire floor up to that point. I have read other reviews and similar things have happened. I followed the directions, acclimated the product for 3+ days, had a flat, clean concrete sub floor. I couldn't have installed it any better. So, the product is defective. The product manual says you have to go through home depot for a claim. After waiting a week for HD to do it, they called and said that I need to contact the manufacturer directly. Going through HD was a big waste of time. I contacted the manufacturer directly and learned a very troubling bit of information. I talked to the warranty department and they asked me many questions about how I installed the flooring. I talked her through the process and she told me that she had been trained on a different installation process. Come to find out that this version of the Allure Ultra that I purchased from HD was an old version of the product and the new version is a "SimpleFit" version where the short end of the plank is installed last in a similar fashion to a "drop and lock" system. To help anyone avoid purchasing the old version, the box was mostly black with silver. The new version is apparently more of a yellow box. I asked her where I can find the new version and they only sell through HD and it is a special order. I searched HD website and there is only 1 version of this new product shown on the website. So to wrap this up, I am waiting on a claim to refund the money for what I have installed. I have to return the rest of the boxes to the store. I would avoid this version of the product. It doesn't stay locked together. I am willing to try the new version but would rather go to a "lay loose" installation. Unfortunately, HD doesn't carry anything like this in a lay loose installation and I really like the look of these vinyl planks.

It feelss slightly soft under your feet. I was sold on it because it is waterproof. We put down a little over 400 sq. ft. in our rental unit. We installed it in a living room, kitchen, hall and bathroom. I only gave it four stars because it is labor intensive to install. The click together assembly takes two people and some time to get use to properly installing these planks. I liked the ease of scoring and snapping it off for cuts. We used a jigsaw for notches. Once installed I belive it looks just as good as higher priced laminate flooring.

I purchased and installed this product in July 2016 in my small 1 bedroom condo- so it has been down for almost a year now. It was installed in all spaces except for the kitchen and bathrooms which were already tiled. This was my first time installing flooring but I'm very handy and have done more complicated home improvement projects such as rebuilding a deck in the past. I had three major issues/complaints... (1) Cutting the planks didn't go quite like the videos. Using a utility knife was only feasible if the cut was straight and even then, popping it apart took a lot. I have scars from deep cuts all over my arms and eventually started applying the pressure over a bannister. Anything more complicated than that such as around corners and other intricacies, you're going to need something else. I used a jig saw and marked up the back side with a wax pencil with the pattern to cut. That makes a huge mess and is so slow. Good luck finding another way to do it. (2) The quality of your sub-floor is very important. Mine wasn't as level as I expected- the previous carpet and pad hid that. The loft area had some type of plywood subfloor that's not very solid. Again, previously hidden by old flooring. In these areas, the "interlock" isn't as tight because of the play in the floor. Despite everything I tried. You can use filler/putty for laminate/vinyl to hide this - took some time to find a good match but it looks good when done. But in these areas, when you walk on the flooring, it makes a weird squeaky/popcorn noise. (3) BIGGEST ISSUE - this floor marks and scratches easily despite what all of the marketing says. Heavy furniture even with felt pads seems to be indenting it already. I tried scratching it before installing it and couldn't do it. Yet somehow even being a fairly careful person, there are fine scratches showing up. The overall look is attractive. It's clearly not wood, but it's a good looking alternative when hardwood isn't practical. If I had it to do all over, I'd probably install something else. But now that it's in, it'll do. OH, and if you haven't already, get an installation kit: tapping block and tight space tapper.

I bought this product rather than a wood laminate because Consumer Reports tested both and said that for scratch resistance and water resistance this product is better. I have installed wood laminate flooring before and this vinyl is a little harder to install. The problem I had is that it is much thinner than wood laminate so the locking features are very small and tend to unlock during installation, especially when the vinyl flexes during the first few runs. The installation instructions say to shim it away from the wall for a quarter inch when installing, but you have to shim many places so the run of planks doesn't flex an unlock the planks. It does look good and the texture is good. It doesn't look like vinyl when installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Far So Good We just replaced the entire upstairs (excluding bathrooms) with the Allure Vintage Oak Cinnamon. I love it so far. As far as durability, we put felt sliders under all our furniture to prevent scratches. Both my boys have gaming chairs that have wheels that are suppose to be good on hardwood floors and so far there hasn't been any issues. Love the variation in color just in case I do need to hide scratch marks with a brown marker (tested on scrap piece). Love that its waterproof. After my son spilled water from his fish tank. I had no worries. The only concern was it is a bit slippery with socks. We do have area rugs in our decor so it helps with that. Installing was tedious. You really have to make sure the planks are connected or it will seperate. We found we had to check, recheck & check again as we were installing. Overall.. we're not rough on our flooring but we love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use flooring. I have used this frequently. It is easy to install and has rich look when installed. Great for damp or in places where water could effect it since it is waterproof and easily removed then replaced after drying.
