What type of grout should I be using in a bathroom if my grout lines are 1/8 inch? Sanded or Sandless? Any other grout suggestions would be great!

I installed the floor as part of my mother’s bathroom renovation, and it came out beautiful! Everyone thought it was real tile, especially because of the grout lines. It was very easy to install, cut, and grout! It’s a shame it is discontinued, please bring it back!

I purchased this Coastal Grey vinyl tile online without seeing it in person, based on reviews and pictures. It is a little lighter than thought, not super dark gray, but still liked it. They are thick tiles and I love the feel of them. Now, as far as installing them. We did it ourselves in our small kitchen. We had to lay new ¼ inch subflooring over the existing floor that had glue residue from the old linoleum we removed. So with that nailed down we made sure to remove debris and laid the tiles leaving 1/8 spacing for grout. The tiles are easy to cut with a utility knife. The glue was excessive and got EVERYWHERE. You could pick up your tools just by touching them after 3 tiles and that was just by touching the corners to lay them down. We had to stop a couple times and clean our hands. The boxes of tile went right from my car to the house so they were not left outside in warm temperatures. But yes, the glue was on the sides of the tiles/paper right out of the box. After they were all down I used Goof Off and cleaned the glue off the tiles. Then I went right on to grouting. I opted for the silver pre-mixed grout. I had never grouted before, and probably should have tried this in a closet or something instead of my kitchen. Live and learn. Once I got the hang of it, it was ok. I only did a little at a time because it dries really fast and you have to get that off the tiles. I tried using a sponge but I couldn’t master that as it kept leaving streaks even after rinsing so I ended up actually using paper towels, lots of them. The grout left some haze in some spots that I cleaned up the next day with some cleaner. I was very please, grout looked great. Fast forward a month…it cracked and it was dirty, like black lines. When I thought it was just dirt and tried to clean it, it was glue. The glue came up between the tile and grout, cracking the grout, yea, and its mostly in the center and by the sink (the most heavily traveled areas). I removed the glue and am keeping an eye on it to see if more glue comes up and will probably end up re-grouting. In hindsight I should have done the darker grout, not liking the dirty look either. THEN: we have a really small 3x5 half bath in the entry way to remodel so we did the same tile (I ordered 6 boxes to do the kitchen and both bathrooms). We left the 1/8 grout spacing. This time I used Q-tips to really clean excess glue around all the edges of the tile and let is sit for 24 hours before I grouted it. I used the dorlean gray pre-mixed grout this time because I’m not fighting that light grout again. Turned out great and no glue has come up even after setting the toilet and sink and I’m hoping it doesn’t at all since this room isn’t used very much. I will not be using this in the big bathroom however because of this issue, I’m going with sheet vinyl. I really love the look and feel of it this tile but the glue is a problem.

The tiles look nicer than the typical vinyl and appear like more expensive ceramic, especially when grouted. I cut them down to 6x24 planks fairly easily by scoring and snapping them in half. The finished edges are beveled slightly, so if you're going to cut them know that the cut edge won't look the same (this wasn't an issue for me since I was going to cover the edges with grout anyways). I'm very pleased with the finished product and would buy again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice looking floor! I love this product and specifically this one that can be grouted. It turned out amazing as you see in the photos. A big tip: before you grout, make sure to remove the sticky adhesive. I am still trying to remove it now and the grout is separating from the tile. I might have to regrout later. Btw, if anyone has leftovers, I could use four tiles! Wish they didn't discontinue!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Floor I bought this flooring sight unseen based on reviews. The color was a little lighter than I expected but still beautiful. I had laid vinyl tile before but never with grouting. It was pretty easy. The trick to cutting is a sharp blade and score from the top. I used a small set of channel lock pliers to help with intricate cuts. It took me most of the day to lay the tile and about two hours to grout and clean up. I went with a light color sanded grout to make the tiles pop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'd Never Know It's Not Ceramic Tile I didn't have a big budget to replace the flooring in my bathroom, so after reading the reviews I decided to purchase this product. It went in over existing sheet vinyl flooring so the prep work was minimal. I received the product on Friday afternoon and by Saturday at noon the installation was complete, it was that easy. I am a 63 year old woman and had no problem at all installing these tiles, I used a sharp tile cutter knife purchased for about $15 and this made the cutting a breeze. Everyone thinks this floor is ceramic tile, it looks very rich and elegant. I finished it off with grey grout. I'm so happy with the results and would definitely recommend it to anyone wishing to upgrade the look of their flooring. I only wish I had known about this product sooner instead of living with my ugly bathroom floor all these years. Great product for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so far so good... We recently installed (we meaning I) the 12" x 24" Coastal Grey tiles and so far love them. Laying them out was quite the challenge but luckily we had a flat vinyl sheet floor already laid in the kitchen so that helped tremendously with keeping to a grid. I did not start at the middle as suggested... I knew I wanted a finished edge at our kitchen entrance from the living room. The tiles are not 24" but rather 23.75 so when laying in a brick pattern a wax pencil was needed to measure 11.75 on the floor next to each full tile to keep the brick formation consistent. Several times I had to lift back up immediately after laying and it wasn't too hard- as long as you did not press any weight down to form a good contact yet. A warning to anyone that when you roll fridge out to lay behind you will get indents in tiles... a day later I believe most of mine disappeared. This leaves me wondering what kitchen chairs and a heavy table will do.. Guess we will find out. I am just starting to grout now... Did 1/5 of the room in Blue Hawk Antique White but then the husband and I thought it was too much of a contrast. It seemed like a good idea but it actually makes the flooring look faker (even though we aren't trying to fool anyone). So we switched to Blue Hawk Saddle Grey and we are pretty happy with the test section. Note- the antique white drys slightly darker as well as the Saddle grey... Going with the Saddle Grey makes me feel better with the knowledge that on some blogs people have reported grout crumbling issues over time. The white grout would have screamed at visitors " look at me me I'm missing here or cracking or chipped!" With the grey it blends in yet is still lighter than the grey tile. Here are some helpful tips or notes from my experience with this project.. I will update after I grout and hope my review is still as positive! - Home Depot has a grout called Simple Grout that is suggested to use but no where on the bucket does it say VINYL. So I was worried. Decided against it - Do your self a favor and remove all shoe molding the day before or do any prep work.. A lot of people said it was a one day job but with just myself doing it I was very overwhelmed at prepping and laying in one day. Didn't get to the grout do to exhaustion. - Your back will hurt but for a new kitchen floor under 400 bucks it might be worth it - Google, google, google! There are tons of blogs and other DIYers out there that used this exact tile and have posted photos, instructions, videos reviews... worth the time! - Get pliers and a carbide utility knife. I would do a few initial cuts and then use pliers to snap. Don't kill yourself trying to cut all the way through... it raises the cut edges forming a lip and tires you. - Every once in a while step back and look at your layout. I did use the arrows but after stepping back I found some of the same concrete patterns where all lined up next to each other and it bothered me so I ripped those up. ( after some time I started to see faces in the tiles... this was prob due to exhaustion and too much coffee) - Get a cutting mat so that you don't have to worry when the knife slips off the tile - Use TSP or a vinyl stripper solution and scrub your floor ( if you have a vinyl floor underlay) - Have a vacuum on hand to constantly vacuum up any small cutters bits or dust etc.
