Customer Questions & Answers

Do the product fibers "shed" or easily come off?

I would like to install on top of carpet but I am concerned that the carpet could be marked up with product residue.
Asked by: BJR
No. They're pretty well attached and only on one side.

Is this product safe to use over hard wood floor, to put eliptical on top?

Asked by: Arvind
I just got my hardwood floors refinished and was planning to lay some ram board (also can be purchased at home depot) in between the floor and mats to give even more protection of the hardwood floors as well as avoid any type of color/rubber transferring or scuffing onto the wood floors.

How thick is this product and would it be sufficient for a home gym (i.e. withstand dropping of heavy weights)?

Asked by: bjd3
The product is about a quarter inch thick. I am using it to floor my exercise room wall to wall. I will be working with weights in the room and by itself I would not drop weights on the floor. However, I got an extra box of tiles and created an additional 4x6 foot "mat" which I put on top of the floor to double its thickness in the area where I am working with weights. I am not working seriously heavy weights or dropping from any height, but you could double, triple, or even quadruple the mat to meet your needs though at some point other padding options may be more efficient. You also need to consider what your subflooring can support. My exercise room is on concrete slab so no problem there.

Can water leak between tiles?

We would like to use this as entryway flooring for our garage. This area will be used to remove snowy and wet boots and clothes. I have a concern with water leaking between the tiles, and causing mold/mildew buildup between the tiles and the concrete floor. Thanks for your help.
Asked by: SnowyBoots
Yes, especially since there's no overlap and many tiles have up to a 1 mm gap in between them.

This was never intended to be placed in someone's living room. This was intended for use under exercise equipment, in a laundry/mud room, in a workshop, or garage. Manufacturing specialty sections would become cost prohibitive. Razor blades are cheap. With all that said, let's get down to it. Bought 9 boxes for an 8'x12' sunroom. There is color variation in some, but nothing that would cause severe anxiety attacks. For the most part, the color was fairly uniform. Rotating the tiles minimized the color variances. Cutting was fairly easy with a razor blade. I went through 6 blades. Thickness variations were experienced in a couple of tiles, and I use them on the edges. The thinner part actually became the waste. I didn't need a rubber mallet, as suggested. In some of the more difficult spots, I would raise the tiles up finger height, and zip the seam, and that worked really well. The sunroom is installed on my deck. I discovered 2 things. 1. The tiles provide a certain amount of insulation, as they made the sunroom warmer by sealing the draft coming through the deck boards. 2. They wick water. I noticed a small leak along the outer wall of the sunroom, and hoped the rubber would keep the carpet dry. It doesn't. The rubber wicks the water up towards the carpet. Now I need to wait for it to stop raining so I can caulk the baseboards, and put the carpet squares back down. The entire process took about 3 hours to include removing the furniture, installing the squares, cutting those that needed it, putting the furniture back, clean-up, and putting the tape measure and cutting straight edge away.

I tried to use them on an enclosed entry front porch and they were not acceptable. The look of each tile needed to be turned to get the shade even so as to look like not put together tiles and then when viewed from another angle the color changed again. I was never able to get a smooth look. Maybe, if you bought different patterns it would work better, I bought the solid black. I returned most of the boxes for refund.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basement rug under drum set We purchased this to put in the basement under my son's drum set. The rubber backing prevents moisture from the cement floor from affecting the drum set. The material absorbs some sound and it is comfortable. The rug feels a little oily but it is for a basement so not a big deal. If you are looking for something with uniform color you will not like this. The color varies between the tiles but it is fine for our needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basement flooring Very nice after all installed. Don't even try matching the colors we got 24 boxes all at the same time and most of them were different colors. Some have more black or more white. If you turn them to match better it will just look different when you walk around the room. Also don't count the edge pieces when figuring out square feet because most of it will not be used anyway and you will end up short

Previous reviews have commented upon the lack of uniformity in both color and thickness of these tiles. Unfortunately these comments are spot on. Nonetheless, the tiles do help to diminish some ambient noise and are certainly comfortable to walk upon, even in socks. There is also some sort of slippy, possibly oily substance on the carpeted surface. But this is non-staining and seems to wear away after a couple of days of use. When cutting I would suggest some heavy duty scissors ($16 to $29), similar to those used in cutting roofing and gutters. It makes trimming and edge shaping substantially easier than a sharp knife alone. Despite being rubber, heavy furniture (ie. Pool table) do not seem to cause the adjacent tiles to separate suggesting some extra compliance in the design of these tile shapes. For an easy floor that can take a beating and be partially replaced, as needed, I would recommend these tiles.

The tiles are very easy to install, and cutting them to fit is a breeze, however if you want a uniform color on your floor these are not the tiles to use. Each box is different and even tiles within a box may vary. The colors run from a light black to a light grey even though the color on the box is the same.

There is some inconsistency in the plush between tiles from different boxes that requires some mix and match tactics in laying out the floor. Very easy to cut to size for a wall to wall fit.
