I have old, 1/8 thick commercial carpet glued to floor. Can I put Laminate over it?

The floor is commercial carpet. It's virtually flat with no softness, really. It's only 1/8" thick. It's glued down to wood subfloor. I know it's not recommended, and may void warranty (I don't care about this), but is it possible to use that as a subfloor, and lay laminate over top of it. This carpet is so thin. It just seems to be perfect as it is for a subfloor. Can it be done? That's my main question. I know it won't be perfect, but can it be done with an acceptable result?
Thanks,
Rob

Answer:
I have installed several laminate floors over low height 1/4 inch and less carpet that have been in place for years without incident. In fact, it is a much better base then the foam sheeting they recommend. Just be certain it is firmly secure and there are no nails or screws or pebbles or bumps of any kind that will show through the laminate.

Rob, you clearly understand that this might fail very quickly, but hey, it may last five years. It depends on that carpet, moisture issues, temperature, and a whole host of variables.

If it's that badly worn you might get lucky but it sounds like a horrible idea.

No, because I think it voids the warranty. Use a vacuum and the Bruce cleaning system.

To cut the short side of plank seems easy but not to the long side plank. Please recommend the suitable tool (hand saw?) from Homedepot store for the cutting job?

Stanley 26 in. Short-Cut Hand Saw. It's slow, but it will do a much better job than any other manual tool out there I can think of. That being said, I've installed many hundred square feet of laminate flooring with only a hand saw to cut it, and I've installed much more using a table saw and a miter saw together. I definitely recommend the electric-powered approach. Good luck!

For any cuts, it's always recommended to use a saw blade that has fine teeth so less edge damage will occur.
If your installation calls for many long cuts, you can use a table saw or circular saw with fine teeth (more than 32) to ensure you'll get a smoother cut. For just a few cuts, you can use either a circular saw or jigsaw.

Remember, that cuts aren't meant to be seen and they will be covered up by quarter round moulding or room transition strips, so it doesn't have to look perfect.
However, to reduce the amount of damage, always cut slowly and place tape over where the cut will go to reduce the amount of chipping.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 40 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Sucks Possibly due to high humidity, but the cheap cardboard T&G's would not allow for proper installation. I have installed thousands of feet in my 35 years of experience; however I have never attempted to install such a shoddy product. July 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Affordable and Easy Although no instructions came with the product it was easy to install and only took a couple of hours to do the living and dining rooms. During transport, the edges of the boards may be damaged easily if you are bumping into walls, or not loading/stacking properly. Of 25 boxes, only 1 board was damaged this way during shipping. It has not scratched or been damaged in any way by normal usage after install. Mistakes during install are easily fixed, simple to manipulate and move around. Cutting to length, the boards do not splinter or fray. Rip cutting is clean with the correct depth on your saw, nothing more complicated than normal rip cuts. Very Satisfied. December 10, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love our new floor After reading many reviews and looking at many pictures....I decided on this flooring for my kitchen and I'm so glad I did, my husband installed the floor with a little bit of help from me, and from his dad.. he said installation wasn't bad, and it only took a couple hours to complete. We still have to put shoe-molding (thats why you can see the little gap). This floor has made a huge difference in the appearance of my kitchen and we couldn't be happier, we have decided to put the flooring through out the rest of our downstairs..im so excited and can't wait till its done! Great product, looks awesome. Great price! March 6, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Breezy I read the 1 star reviews and had second thoughts about buying this flooring. I went to the store and made sure I bought boxes of this product that were not opened, scored or smashed. I was surprised how easily the flooring went down and the end result was GREAT! I spent more time setting up underlayment and tools than actually putting in floor. Wife loves it and so do I! March 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by What a great product This flooring goes down so easy and is a pleasure to work with. I have installed over 600 sq ft of this stuff, most of it by myself. It does have the tendency to have a corner or two to chip up, and the interlocking tongue and grove points can crumble if you are too rough with them. Otherwise it looks really great. For about $1/sq ft it is a fantastic deal. They lock in tight and look fantastic when complete. I definitely recommend this in spite of other bad reviews. Just as in life sometimes you get a bad batch or a few bad boards, it's ok I only lost 1 sheet to shipping damage. June 19, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wow! Thanks to the people who write the reviews here I took a chance on this product and I couldn't be happier. It looks fabulous and the price is incredible. I am really on a tight budget to redo my son's rooms and I coupled it with Behr Premium paint. Its a whole new room. I had it professionally installed by Home Depot since an improper installation will void the 15 year warranty, but I painted myself and removed the hideous carpet. This looks just as fabulous as the Pergo xp I had put in the Kitchen in June. Time will tell how they wear. I have a Jack Russell with sharp nails! September 24, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really great floor! This is a great floor! It looks-and so far-performs like a higher priced floor. We bought it for a house in Florida with sandy sandy sandy(!) soil, and it has held up beautifully- even at the entrance area. I was worried about scratches, but it looks fine. It's also not slippery, which I worried about too. Not too hard to install, takes some cutting to make the patterns work out, but not too bad. Use a block to tap the lengths together. Overall, it looks wonderful, holding up really well, and was a fabulous deal for the price! October 8, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great stuff Looks great, fairly easy to install yourself if you are capable of doing so. Can be a little tricky to figure out which pieces fit where (as certain sides will only lock with certain sides). we have this stuff in our kitchen as well as master bedroom and think it works great for an alternative to Pergo. Use the matting underneath to help with noise of hard flooring. be cautious when connecting the boards as the edges that lock the boards together will break off if you hit them the wrong way (use a rubber mallet!)
