Customer Questions & Answers

How long after application do you need to wait to paint?

Asked by: Izzy
The usage info is available in the spec guide which is posted on the item in Vulkem 116 generally cures at a rate of 1/16” per day at 75°F (24°C) and 50% relative humidity. It will skin in 5 hours and be tack free in 30 hours. The cure time will increase as temperatures and/or humidity decrease. A good rule of thumb is one additional day for every 10°F decrease in temperature.

What to use to clean up?

Asked by: PH
Excess sealant and smears adjacent to the joint interface can be carefully removed with xylene or mineral spirits before the sealant cures. Any utensils used for tooling can also be cleaned with xylene or mineral spirits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What Charlie said... Previous reviewer Charlie mentioned 30 yr old Vulkem still going strong. I've been a carpenter for 20+ years and as an apprentice I was tasked with caulking in multiple scenarios (since foreman realized it was one of the few things I did well at that point). I despised Vulkem and cursed the makers, since if I got any on my skin it became a friggin birthmark! I suggest trying out in test situation if you've never used before. It will leave black marks on skin for months afterwards if not doused with mineral spirits, etc almost immediately. Remember, wiping a caulk joint afterwards makes you a wiper not a caulker. Once you master well enough to use in a finish situation (solid joint w/no wavers), you will never use any other caulk/sealant again. I've gone back (like Charlie pointed out) @ exterior cedar trim joints I'd done 15-20 yrs ago and in some cases the cedar completely rotted yet even the "scarf" joints (two pieces meet in middle of long run) were solid and even preventing trim from falling off completely. I swear by this stuff and once you know how to apply it you'll never swear AT it again...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's Forever This caulk is on some 30 year old aluminum over foam roofing. It is still flexible after 30 years of California sun. The go to caulk for any permanent sealing application.
