Customer Questions & Answers

will the color bleed in rain

Will the color bleed if it gets wet right after it is applied? or will it skin over quickly enough?
Asked by: mike
Optimum temperature for applying Vulkem is above 40 degrees and 50% or less humidity … so application in the rain, or with the threat of rain, is not recommended. Substrate also needs to be clean & dry for application. Therefore, if it rains prior to caulking being cured their may be potential for caulking to “bleed” or fail. Vulkem “skins” over in approx. 5 hours and is tack free in approx. 30. Cure time is 1/16” per hour

Re: chimney flashing as well as chimney flue expansion joint... Is this appropriate for sealing metal chimney flashing to the brick? Also, I can find no specs related to its heat resistance/tolerance... is it appropriate for sealing the expansion joint between a clay chimney flue & a concrete chimney crown (taking into consideration both the materials and the increased temperature of the flue when the furnace is in use)?
Asked by: mcsmama
Max temp it can withstand is 185 degrees – one material is fully cured. It could take up to 10 days for the caulking to cure in our current weather conditions. Feel free to contact their tech line for additional info: 866.209.2404

Can this be used for pool deck cracks?

My concrete pool deck has developed expansion/settling cracks over the decade it has been in place. Can Vulkem 116 be used to seal the cracks prior to re-staining the Kooldeck
Asked by: Dave
Yes Vulkem is designed for use on concrete and masonry no guarantee on how the stain will take to it though, that would be a question for the stain manufacture. Below is taken directly from their data sheets Vulkem 116 has a 30-year history of delivering superior primerless adhesion to porous substrates, which makes it the choice for sealing expansion joints in commercial construction applications.

10.1 oz. White Vulkem 116 Polyurethane Sealant is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from made from the best stuff on earth Yes, it is expensive. Yes it can be messy. Yes it takes a long time to cure. I'm pretty sure you could build a house out of this stuff though. Vulkem is hard to find in Phoenix but if you need something sealed and secure (i.e. a huge window) this is the business. Wear disposable gloves, use rags, bring patience along too and you are guaranteed to have an impenetrable seal. What are you waiting for? Get this already! Buy tremco stock!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not up to recommendation..... We have been remodeling our home with brand new siding. Vulkem was recommended by a number of contractors when looking for a caulk for the LP Lap siding on our walls. The first tubes we received were very difficult to squeeze out. Now having read another review, it is obvious we got some old tubes. The product appeared to go on well, although very messy to clean up afterwards. However, after one summer all the back wall joints on the sun side of the house started cracking. They did not make it 1 year and now all the joints must be cleaned out and recaulked before painting. Given all the recommendations, I expected Vulkem to last longer than that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best product on the market We used it to caulk and seal our windows and to seal the seams on the house when we painted it. The caulk is wonderful - it seals completely and contracts and expands with the weather to ensure excellent coverage. Paint sticks to it, so once it's applied and dry, you can paint right over it. We won't use any other caulk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best chalk I ever used Rental property, lots of houses. This stuff is there years latter. At the beach some 20-30 year calking will crack and separate after 2-5 years. Vulkem is still going under harsh conditions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 10.1-oz. White Vulkem 116 Polyurethane Sealant Problem was that the product sent was out of date and too hard to get out off tube. A call to the manufacturer said it should come out like toothpaste, but it came out like thick dough. Not reflecting the product, but the fact that HD sent old stuff. Base rating on what others said. I am sure a fresh product would have been great. Can't answer some questions below because I could not successfully use the product.
