Customer Questions & Answers

can the anchors secure a shower grab bar

I am installing 2 grab bars (1 18in, and 1 24in) will theses anchors support the weight going thru ceramic tile?
Asked by: Poncho
No, not alone. You need something that will support a worst-case dynamic load. Think of a 300lb person trying to stop their fall by the grab bar. Preferably, the grab bar should be anchored to studs, or other structure, with significant all metal hardware.

#10 1-1/2 in. Anchors with Screws (10-Pack) is rated 2.3 out of 5 by 8.

It weighs 33 lbs. These anchors work well if installed with some care. DON'T USE the INCLUDED BIT. Use a regular 5/16 twist drill carefully to make a clean hole. Squeeze the thin plastic strips tight to the anchor body ( the strips holding the inside-the-wall wedge part to the anchor body) and push in straight, with no twisting, and lightly tap it flush with the wall with a small hammer. Put the screw through your item. By hand, or with a screw gun set to lowest torque that turns the screw, tighten the screw until you feel more resistance than on the way in. Turn just a bit more so it's snug and and STOP when any additional torque is ineffective. The picture shows what happens inside the wall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Work great - so much better than cheap plastic anchors Not sure what happened with one of the previous reviewers. These anchors work great! I bought a large box of them and used them to install a medicine cabinet, several mirrors, a towel bar and a toilet paper holder. I like the metal expanding anchors but they are more expensive and just seemed like overkill for the jobs I had to do. They come in small packages so I guess if you have any issue you wouldn't have spent that much money. The drill bit that came in the package I bought was perfect for the anchors - that was actually something that I really liked because I'm always guessing which drill bit to use when I drill holes in drywall.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No anchoring, only holes in the drywall Believe the 1 star reviews, these do not anchor even themselves in drywall. I was attempting to use these to anchor the bases of cabinets to the wall during my kitchen install (not load bearing). After drilling the holes and inserting the anchor (per the included instructions) is about where everything goes wrong. Once the screw is half way into the anchor, the anchor begins to spin freely in the drywall creating a larger hole and refusing to grab. Now I have a couple of holes in my wall that are too large for new anchors (I'll try a different product) but it will require pulling down all the cabinets to get to the wall. This product is single handedly responsible for putting my project on hold, likely several days to a week (HD is closed for the night, we'll see when I get more free time). Thanks for nothing Cobra, I'll be avoiding ALL of their products from now on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from These are poor quality anchors I'm hanging 7# speakers on the wall and noticed the anchors started to pull out. The drill size was right but the use of these anchors is very limited. The screw must be screwed in tightly for the anchor to spread and hold on to the inside of the drywall. So if you are hanging anything from a screw that sticks out and isn't screwed in tightly and flush, the anchor will pull out. Maker should had clearly stated this as anyone using a #10 screw is using it as a screw mount of some type. What I found is that the auger anchors secure into the drywall without the need for the screw to be tight and flush, so I'll be buying those next. Just glad I found out about this installation flaw before the speaker fell off of the wall!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible 8 of these "anchors" wouldn't event hold a 10lb shelf in standard drywall. The plastic portion pulls away from the drywall. This is probably due to the fact that the provided 5/16" drill bit is actually a 1/4" drill bit with a 5/16" tip, which makes the hole in to the drywall too large. Use 1/4" bit!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My opinion - don't even consider buying these Don't ignore the negative reviews and assume that the failure of this product was because of the installers. It wasn't. "Once the screw is half way into the anchor, the anchor begins to spin freely in the drywall creating a larger hole and refusing to grab." NoKitchenTonight Yep, this is exactly what happened to me except that the screws were all of the way down before the anchors just spun around and would not catch and expand. I lopped off their heads and pushed their carcasses into the wall cavity. I really hate it when a product causes me additional work to correct their failure. Also, the drill bit is an excruciatingly cheap masonry bit that is actually a 8.5mm bit (0.338), not a 5/16-inch (0.3125). The anchor is also 8.5mm, not 5/16-inch.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful. Pull away from the wall with the shelf alone. Have used many wall anchors. These are a waste of money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than other reviews suggest. Just by reading the other reviews, I can tell some people weren't using them correctly. Make sure you understand how to use the tool properly before you blame it for failures. I've tried MANY types of drywall anchors, including those super popular "Twist-N-Lock" over-sized screw anchors. These are BY FAR the best. Shelves hung with just two of these will hold my weight. I am the go-to "help me install this" with many friends and family members, and so I've tried all sorts of anchors to find the best ones--I don't want to go back to fix something because someone's kid was doing pull-ups on it. The only anchor I've found to hold more than this is a toggle bolt, but they require large holes and are more expensive.
