You need to be able to get the split in the handle 1/2 way up into the bolt, if not, then file off some wood until you can measure and least 1/2 the split will go into the bolt. The one I just repaired, went in and I had to cut 1" of wood off the top of the bolt. Without doing this, the weakest point of the handle will where the split is. Once you get the handle fitted into the sledge bolt and the handle trimmed, then take the metal triangle (rounded end) and drive it into the split, this will force the wood out into the bolt and lock the handle to the bolt, keep hitting the wedge until it is even with the top of the bolt. There is no way that it will break off, and a lot of the individuals have no idea on how to replace the handle, thus causing them to break.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacment handle I used this handle to replace the handle on my four pound splitting maul. After years of use the old handle cracked. This replacement handle fit nice and snug once the head was driven on. After trimming to fit I only needed the wooden wedge and woodworking glue to set it in place. My only complaint is I wish replacement handle were not varnished as it makes them slick and more work for me. I strip the finish of of them and then seal them with linseed oil. This gives you better grip and control whIle still preserving the wood.

Took light sanding to make fit in 10# sledge. Getting end halfway or better into sledge, then holding handle end with sledge end down--just tap on the handle end and the sledge end keeps moving up the handle, for a very snug fit. Snugger than one can get-by trying to pound the sledge end DOwn on the handle. This effect of inertia is interesting to watch. Follow instructions on installing the wood split and steel wedge lock.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard to find a good handle at the HD After going to two different stores and waiting a week to return to the second store, I sorted through eight or ten handles. All to find a subpar handle that was the best of the lot. None of the handles had proper grain orientation and the one I bought was at a 45 degree to center and no knots. It all boils down to.... if you need to go to HD for a handle, be prepared to search through them to find a good one.

When I swung my sledge hammer overhead, the handle broke. I did not miss my target and did not hit the handle against anything. It just splintered. Poor quality wood if you ask me

Stick the handle into the sledge, make sure its secure, saw off flush with the sledge and tap the metal wedge into the handle and you are ready to go. I don't use it that often but its nice to have when you need one.

The grain of the handle was oriented correctly and there were no apparent weak areas. This replacement handle came with both a wood and metal shim and it fit my 8 lb. sledgehammer head with very little trimming.
