Customer Questions & Answers

I have a problem getting the original hickory handle with plastic guard off the old pick axe. Anything I am missing?

Asked by: Ron
I put the broken handle with the pickaxe head between two rocks. It fit there pretty good. I got my sledge and pounded the old broken yellow wedge piece out.(from narrow to thick) It took several good attempts to do this after beating on the pick axe blade itself with my 32oz hammer did absolutely nothing.

How do you install the handle

Asked by: Joe
Place the handle through the top of your blade (wooden side through first until the yellow plastic sleeve contacts your blade). The easiest way from here is to tamp the top of the yellow plastic sleeve onto a hard surface (concrete, stump, rock) until your blade is tight around the sleeve. The weight of the blade should drop itself down onto the sleeve and get tighter each time you hit it on the ground. Don't hit your blade, only the handle.

How do I install it?

I received the Sledge Hammer replacement piece today with the handle guard but, it didn't come with any instructions as to how I can insert it in my 8 lb sledge head. The top of the head is enclosed. Do I cut off/remove the rubber top covering to expose the wooden top of the handle? If yes, how much of the rubber guard covering do I remove?
Asked by: Don
You have to remove the rubber over the opening and then slide the sledge head on the handle. A few hard licks with another hammer usually does the trick positioning the head on the new handle. The more you can drive the handle into the head the better as long as you don't damage either the head or the new handle.

This handle had a tight fit, and with a solid tamping on the ground snugged up secure. I don't expect it to come loose any time soon. The Handle was as smooth as you would want a wooden handle to be, and also enough grip to keep from slipping. I expect this to eventually break, just as I did with the original fiberglass handle, but this ash sounds strong when you thump it in the ground, so I hope it lasts a good long while.

I bought this as the replacement handle. I was using it for a day or two and the yellow part at the top started to break off. It didn't make the pick ax become unstable or fly off. I returned the replacement handle to Home Depot and they exchanged it for another one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Handle split in two Description says hardwood but it isn't hickory. Was chopping out a dead locust sapling and the handle split down the middle. Fortunately the 4lb mattock head didn't go flying off which could have caused personal injury. I would post a photo but HD doesn't allow it.
