Thinking of using this under a swing set/ slide area. Flat soil as mulch & weed screen just removed. Would this work?

Asked by: outdoorkids
We suggest a layer of compacted, decomposed granite for ideal drainage.

Do I have to prepare the ground?

Can this be laid directly onto to the dirt ground? Or do I have to prepare the ground underneath? If so, how?
Asked by: nbtmbm
Hi nbtmbm. Thank you for your question. Yes, it is highly recommended that you prepare the soil for your new artificial turf. The purpose of the soil preparation is to prevent the natural shrinking and expansion that native soil will have. You will need to excavate about 2-3 inches of your native soil and replace it with a course paver base or up to 3-4 inches if you have a sand or clay base. This base should then be dampened while you are compacting the material. A plate compactor is recommended for proper compaction. This type of material will not expand and stretch your newly laid artificial turf making it look like a carpet that needs to be stretched. When grading the area, be sure to take into account the need for proper water runoff. Always grade so that the water runs away from your structure and not toward it. You will want a 1-2% grade for good drainage. Once the desired area has been graded compacted, your next step is to install a commercial grade weed barrier. Since your artificial grass has necessary drainage holes, the weed mat will help to prevent a weed seed from getting down to the soil or even from starting to grow at all. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC
